Bryan (aka Stemy) and I met through our mutual friend John at a birthday dinner at BJs in Fullerton, CA November 2006. I was dating at the time, so I didn't really pay much attention to him. The only thing we had in common that we briefly discussed was the fact that we worked for Environmental Consulting firms. Stemy lived in Davis, while I lived in Orange County. After our encounter, I thought about how cute he was and asked John for his email address.
I ended up emailing him of course! Just general questions, nothing too provoking. He mentioned that he would be celebrating his 25th birthday in southern CA (end of January 2007) with his friends and invited me to come by. Of course, I said yes! I was excited about seeing him again and when the day came to see him on his birthday, I was nervous, yet thrilled at the same time. We had a great time at his birthday party, so much fun that we had our first kiss! I had butterflies in my stomach and just knew that we would eventually be together.
After his birthday party, Stemy went back to Davis. I ended the relationship I was in and started to get to get to know him more over the phone, gchat, texts, etc. I enjoyed every moment getting to know him more. Eventually, in the month of February, I made my first flight to visit him in Davis. We had been talking so much over the phone that I was afraid I would forget what he looked like when I saw him again. But of course, when I saw him again at the terminal, the butterflies in my stomach came back.
We hit it off instantly and officially got together March 18, 2007. Although we lived miles apart, the longest time we spent away from one another was 10 days. We flew and/or drove to see one another and didn't care how much it would cost! He was worth every penny!
After 6 months of dating, I moved in with him (of course, I found a new job before making the move!) He had just moved out of Davis and into his own apartment in Sacramento that he shared with his dog, Marley.
Stemy and his friend Niel were planning a camping trip to Rock Creek (eastern Sierras) during the month of August 2009. He studied the eastern Sierras for his summer field camp through the Geology program at UC Davis and has been there in the past with his Dad and also and I had never been. There were approximately 11 people on the trip both from southern and northern CA. John was there too!
I was previously warned that it was dry camping which meant no running water unless I drove to the rest area. Of course, I said it was fine and just went with the flow! On day 2 of the trip (Saturday, August 22, 2009), a friend of mine went on a little hike around the campground during the early morning. We talked about work, family, and getting married one day to our boyfriends. Little did I know (or did she), that later that day Stemy was going to propose to me during our day hike.
When we arrived back to the camp site, all the boys were filthy and sweaty from playing sports and not showering. I was a little upset at Stemy for not cleaning up and not getting ready for our afternoon hike. But alas, we eventually went on our hike to Rock Creek. It was absolutely beautiful! We decided to have lunch over looking the lake and mountains.
After lunch Stemy asked that I take a picture with him by the lake. I was hesitant at first because #1 - he rarely asks to take pictures together and #2 - I was up on the rocks and had to truck my way down by the lake. After huffing and puffing, I made my way down to take a picture with him. I then started to notice that all of our friends had their cameras out, which was a bit strange. And before I knew it, Stemy was down on one knee and I just started balling. I honestly don't think I heard what he had to say or even gave him an answer. I just started crying and held my hand out! Eventually, on our way back from the hike, I told him YES!
