President and Mrs. James Monro shared over 40 blissful years as husband and wife, many of which were spent at Ash Lawn-Highland, their plantation in Charlottesville, Virginia. Perhaps one of the finest days was when their older daughter, Eliza, was wed in their Highland home.

Ash Lawn-Highland invites you to celebrate your union at the home of James and Elizabeth Monroe, built in the 1790s. A picturesque historic house with adjacent gardens, Ash Lawn-Highland offers a one-of-a-kind location for both wedding ceremonies and receptions. We accommodate formal and informal, daytime and evening events. Each party is provided optimal privacy and flexibility. Plus, guests can take a complimentary tour of the Monroe home as part of our welcome! We encourage you to welcome your guests to Ash Lawn-Highland as James and Elizabeth Monroe welcomed theirs.

Ash Lawn-Highland provides a variety of facilities to accommodate your event:

- Handsomely groomed Johns Garden and the Peacock Yard (suitable for both smaller and larger parties).

- The 50′ by 80′ Hilltop Pavilion with a full concrete floor (adjacent to the Johns Gardens, suitable for up to 400 guests).

- The 30′ by 70′ Event Barn (heated and cooled) with two stories, both available for use. (Designed in the style of a historic barn on site, the new Event Barn has two floors—a lower level encompassing a historic stone wall, and an upper level, both with picturesque views of pastures and mountains. This facility is heated and air conditioned, and both levels may be used for the same event, providing space for drinks and hors d’oeuvres separate from dinner, or dinner separate from dancing.)

- The Conference Room featuring a full kitchen partitioned from the dining room and bathroom facilities. (Ideal for smaller indoor functions—such as rehearsal dinners—during the winter months. Seats sixty guests.)

- A rose arbor adorning the Johns Gardens, and a seven-foot-high garden arch.

- The Ash Lawn-Highland Museum Shop which holds a wide selection of gifts unique to James Monroe’s era—historic replicas ideal for the bridal party, as well as the bride and groom. Read less

Gorgeous scenery. Everything was perfect, except for a few details:
1) There was bird poop on the floors (! How did it get there? No idea) and the windows. We cleaned the floors ourselves, but the poop on the windows stayed because it was on the outside and 2 stories off the ground.
2) In the days leading up to the wedding and the day of, the event/wedding coordinator completely stopped responding to emails or phone calls. A little weird, but maybe she figured her job was done?
3) The lights in the Event Barn do not dim. Minor annoyance during the first dances and dancing part of the reception. Hey, I guess too much light is better than not enough. I would have put up more lights of my own though had I known this so I didn't have to use theirs.

Other than that, typical Ash Lawn Highland gorgeousness. The views are amazing. They allow your guests a walk-through informal tour of the the home, which was fun for most people.

All things considered, a great venue.

Ash Lawn-Highland is absolutely beautiful and Brittany Harton was a wonderful site coordinator. She was extremely responsive which only made our experience that more wonderful and special to us. Vendors had great accessibility to our reception site on the property and the grounds were absolutely beautiful. It was an unforgettable day overall, and we couldn't be happier to have gotten married at Ash Lawn!!

Ash Lawn-Highland was very accommodating to our needs and were flexible regarding the start time of our event. The location is a great value as it is competitively priced and the whole property is available to you for the day. We used one lawn for the ceremony, another for games, and the wonderful pavilion for our reception, which could also serve as a great rain location. It was very reassuring having that safety net as we did have summer storm clouds on our wedding day.

Ash Lawn is hands down one of the most beautiful spots in Charlottesville. And their rates are very reasonable, compared with some of the other outdoor options in town. Because they are a historical site, they might have a little less flexibility than other venues, as they have to accommodate tours etc. And their bathroom and indoor facilities could stand to be upgraded. Their staff however is extremely professional and responsive, and Ash Lawn overall is a great value.

Ash Lawn-Highlands is a beautiful venue. We were very excited to have our ceremony and reception here. As beautiful as the venue is there are a few things that were disappointing:
-chairs that are provided are out dated and most people end up renting different chairs
-the event coordinator changed during our planning process and we were not informed until I emailed a few times. (the new coordinator is great though)
-Visiting hours were supposed to end at 6:00, but we were still seeing people walking the grounds and driving in and out of the venue at 6:30 when were trying to take pictures.

Besides that they were very flexible with letting us set up early and pick up things a little later. Brittany is the new coordinator and she was very quick to get back to me and great at answering questions.

We absolutely love James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland. My husband and I visit president's homes as a hobby and literally fell in love with Ash Lawn the first time we visited. A few years later, after my future husband proposed at Monticello.... we booked Ash Lawn as our wedding venue that week! Baylor is simply the best!! He did everything we needed and was in contact with us throughout the process! If you are a history buff looking for the perfect place.... pick Ash Lawn-Highland. No president's home compares!!!!!! Happiest days of our life was at this beautiful location! All of our guests said it was the most amazing wedding they have ever been to.... one guest said, "every nook and cranny is simply gorgeous"

Baylor Reinhart was our contact person at Ash Lawn - Highland and he was wonderful. He was VERY responsive and did everything he could to make sure our day was what we wanted (including accepting Fed Ex deliveries in the days before the wedding as we were planning our wedding from out-of-town). He also inspired some serious confidence when he told me that he had helped organize 132 weddings that were held at the outdoor venue without rain during the ceremony. It is breathtakingly beautiful venue and there is only one rule: no sparklers. Although this venue is expensive there are three important points about the cost 1) the majority of the fee charged is a tax-deductible donation; 2) because the venue is so beautiful, you only need minimal flowers and other decore - i.e. it is different than decorating a hotel ball room; 3) you can have the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception in different areas of the venue (the estate is large), so you don't have to incur the additional cost of a donation to a church, or renting an additional room for child care (we had child care in the air-conditioned conference room that has a great patio and yard for the kids to play), and you can avoid hosting the cocktail hour in the hallway outside the hotel ball room.

Although the venue is truly amazing, it is a bit more rustic than most - meaning that you need to build a good team of vendors that are familiar with the venue so you don't get bogged down with the logistics. For example, I would definitely consider 20 South as your caterer as they have their own catering kitchen (a much needed asset at Ash Lawn - Highlands that many other caterers must rent and they pass on the cost to you) and they know the size and number of plastic curtains that you may consider renting in case of rain during the reception. 20 South also handles all the rental orders for linens, china, etc., for you at cost (Ash Lawn has tables you can use, but the chairs are a little beat up so you may consider renting them).

The last (and probably most important) aspect of this venue is the freedom they give you to make a memorable event. Our wedding was on a Saturday and we were the only wedding of the weekend. We showed up on Thursday morning and clean-up did not occur until Sunday, Baylor was not only OK with our extended use of the property, but encouraged it by saying "The place is yours, use all of it and do what you will - but no sparklers!"

We would recommend this gorgeous, historic venue without hesitation!

Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe, is a beautiful setting with very few amenities to offer. Basically, you pay for the beauty. I got married on a Sunday to keep down costs and it still hurt the budget. However, multiple guests have said it was the most beautiful wedding they've ever attended (in a sincere way, not that "we just want to be nice" kind of comment). So if the setting is a big deal for you then I say go for it. If you need more of a complete package that provides a lot of the details for you (such as a kitchen, linens, set-up, etc.) then search elsewhere. I do like that this provides a clean canvas for you the entire day of your event, unlike many of the churches I checked.

Ash Lawn might be the most beautiful venue to get married in the Charlottesville area. One perk is less rentals than a vineyard in the area. The place is incredible with a great pavillion for the reception. Downfalls were poor communication on their end when they tore down the rain site without telling us, failure to communicate amount of tables they had. Overall it's worth dealing with the unknowledgable owners to get a historical and beautiful wedding venue.
