Black Bear Crossings (BBC) is a nice place by the lake. The promenade is covered, so guests do not have to worry about getting wet in the rain or sitting in the hot sun. The promenade overlooks the lake, so you have a great view. If you speak loudly enough, you really don't need a microphone because the acoustics are good. The reception area is indoors with two walls of windows. The lake is not visible, but there is a pretty man-made waterfall instead. BBC does weddings frequently. They have a list of preferred and exclusive vendors that work well with BBC. BBC does not have as much flexibility (no outside food, cake and DJ are exclusive vendors) as other places might. I would recommend using their preferred vendors. The florist and the linen rental company were great. We didn't use the recommended hotel vendor, and this was definitely more stressful. During this planning process, we went through 3 wedding coordinators. It was a bit unsettling to have different coordinators throughout the year, but things went fairly smoothly during these transitions. Pam is the co-owner and also runs the kitchen. Alyssa is her assistant. Both were great. Pam responded to email, showed us around the venue, and came up with last minute ideas to help us. The tasting occurs once per year. Food at the wedding was much better than at the tasting. You also get to meet the vendors and see table settings at the tasting. We had a minor hiccup because we had a scheduled rehearsal, but the wedding that was going to take place three hours later was already setting up during our rehearsal time, and this led to a chaotic rehearsal. Overall, this is a great scenic place to get married. While there are some restrictions with exclusive vendors and no outside food, everything else falls into place because the vendors work with the venue so well. Despite the multiple changes in wedding coordinators, everything turned out great. Thank you Pam, Alyssa, and BBC.

We were engaged for approximately 17 months and right when we got engaged we decided to choose a venue as we had a specific date in mind. We loved the venue, as it is a historic restaurant on Como Lake. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, and the waterfall can be seen from the reception room. The price was on the low end for wedding venues in the twin cities. We were in contact with their event planner Kathy, who was always extremely responsive and answered questions.
One thing we personally liked about the venue is that they only allow one DJ (Midwest Sound), so we didn't have to look for a DJ. Our DJ was great, and we were happy with Midwest Sound.
We also thought their food was extremely good. We did not have a great experience at the taste testing (food was cold by the time we were served and the cake was dry), however we (and our guests) were very impressed with the food on the day of. They were flexible with vegetarian options. We chose to have centerpiece cakes, which our guests really enjoyed as they were able to mingle with other tables who had different flavors of cake. Each cake was really moist and delicious.
We chose to work with Flowerama for flowers as they deliver to BBCs for free and know the venue inside and out.
We were slightly disappointed that outside food and beverage was not allowed (favors could not be edible!).
Sadly, we did have communication issues when Kathy stopped emailing us and we discovered she had quit. We were not notified of this until I emailed and asked. We were in contact with the other event planner named Shannon. She was friendly, but she stopped contacting us as well at one point. We then found out that she had a family emergency and was unable to help us with our wedding. We did not meet the 3rd wedding planner until the day of, and she was helpful but we were overall disappointed that we had to go through 3 of them. Pam, the owner's wife was extremely helpful.
Overall we had a wonderful wedding thanks to BBC.

We only used Black Bear Crossing for our ceremony so I can not speak to the quality of the reception services. As a ceremony spot you only get 2 hours to use the facility and there are a lot of rules, which includes getting there and setting up. Luckily, we had a short ceremony so this worked out okay. However, they have mics but the sound didn't actually work during the ceremony so people couldn't hear the readers etc. which was sad. Given the amount you pay for this I would expect the sound to work and a complete sound check to be done. Additionally, the staff was not very friendly, helpful or welcoming. However, the location is beautiful, great for pictures, and great if you want an outdoor ceremony but don't want to worry about rain.

Thank you Black Bear Crossings for making our wedding weekend wonderful! Your site is beautiful, so many compliments from guests. You accomodated all of our needs with flexibility and professionalism during the planning process and the day of our wedding. Your team was there to answer any questions we had the morning of, during and after our wedding ceremony and reception. We oved that you came up to us (the bride and groom) after the first bites of salad, meal and dessert to ask us how it all tasted. The cupcakes were delicious and the meat was very moist! Very well done, thank you!

Pre-Wedding review: We've had one meeting with Kathy, the coordinator, and emailed back and forth of course. So far she's been great with everything! The only thing that's a little tricky is that because they have weddings there on Friday nights, we either have to have our rehearsal on Thursday or during the day on Friday. But other than that, everything's been great.

Post-Wedding review – A+: We had a final details meeting with Kathy about a month before the wedding and got all the details worked out. And because they didn't have an evening wedding booked the Friday before the wedding, we were able to have the rehearsal on Friday night, which worked out great for all our out of town guests. The day of the wedding went great – I wasn't there for set up, but everything looked great when I got there and the music was playing, so I assume that everything went well! We got a lot of compliments on the choice of venue for the ceremony, people really liked it. Also, it rained pretty much the entire wedding day, but because the promenade is covered, it didn't matter one bit!
