I am an Independent Bridal Alterationist with 36 years of experience in Bridal fittings and alterations. I studied Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. I am extremely good at what I do, so you can entrust the alterations of your special dress to me with confidence! Over the years I have really enjoyed and taken great pride in making my clients look their very best on their memorable day. I do all the fittings and alterations myself in my home and ask that you only bring one person with you to your fittings. I am conveniently located one block from the #355 Maple Ave. Exit in Downers Grove. I have a selection of bra cups and slips for fullness in the skirt available for your convenience. It is wise to make an appointment with me well ahead of time to be six weeks before your wedding date. I am able to press some wedding gowns but others will need more advanced equipment to make them look their best. If this is the case, I refer my brides to a local professional who specializes in pressing and preserving wedding gowns. Read less

I used Ruth for my wedding dress and it was one of the best decisions I made in my entire wedding planning process. Ruth certainly had her work cut out for her: I'm 5' 1"/street size 10/ DDD bust. As a result, I bought a size 14 Maggie Sottero Ascher gown and it had to be taken in most everywhere.

Unfortunately, I started a new birth control just weeks before the wedding date and by my second fitting, my body's natural adjusting process was roaring it's ugly head. I was bloated in both my stomach and bust. While most bridal salons lead you to believe that your alterations should be complete at least a month before the wedding, Ruth was able to artfully rework the fit just a week before the big day. Essentially, she pins the dress at the first fitting to allow for adjustments at the second fitting. I was panicking that the dress no longer seemed to fit in a flattering manner but she was able to work her magic.

Some are surprised at what quality alterations can cost. However, Ruth's prices are extremely reasonable given her extensive experience and the care and time she takes with each piece. For example, to adjust length from my lace over satin dress, the seamstress has to painstakingly remove the lace, trim the satin, and then carefully reapply the lace. Otherwise, the dress loses detail.

Ruth will provide her expert opinion on what she feels is your best course of action given her many years in the industry. Ultimately, though, she will respect whatever design decisions you make and ensures you are making an informed decision.

I read good reviews and decided to go there! I regret it! she was giving me direction on the phone instead of giving me her address- it would have been much easier. She talked to me like I am stupid or something. When i arrived at her apartment building, I had to wait for her husband to let me in and she said" do not say a work while in the hallway, until you come in my apartment" . She was sarcastic with me and I almost left. She was rude and snobby like she owns the world. She talked like she is the best ever! She said she does not give a quote because she is too busy to be playing around and she started ripping my dress-pretty much you have no chance if you go there. I wanted to have my dress shortened and wanted to have her opinion first but she started opening seams and stuff. She is old and over weight so she could not move around too much but would made me turn every direction. She wrote down what needed to be done and she said" I can't tell you how much it would cost you" What?#@#!???
How come? She just wrote down what needs to be done and she did not know how much would that cost me?????? To make the story short- she charged me $300 for taking in the dress about 1 inch; fixing the boning in my dress and for adding a bustle!!!!! I thought it was waaaaaaay to much for what she did but I had no option. I paid and I left with bad taste in my mouth! Overall, the experince wasnt nice and I do not reccomend her! On top of that, she send me to these cleaners who did not clean my dress and argued with me, so I had to call the POLICE! So if you decide to go to her, DO NOT take the business card of the cleaners she would recommend! They are probably friends or relatives! Trust me! DO NOT!

Bridal Alterations by Ruth responded with the following comments:

Many of my brides have had problems finding my address using their GPS or map quest directions. It is easy if they follow my directions and that is why I give them when my brides make their appointments. I tell them I work from my home as well. When they arrive at my condo, they call me from their car and my husband lets them in the side door closest to our unit, so they do not have to walk all the way from the main entrance. I ask my brides not to talk in the hallways out of consideration for my neighbors. If my brides ask me for a quote on the phone, I tell them my average range is from $300 to $450, with some being less and some more than the range. I only charge for what I do. Bridal alterations are much more involved than they used to be. The styles, fabrics and construction of the dresses are more complex, as well as the number of layers. For this reason it is very difficult to give a quote rather than a range because you do not know how much time it will take . There are many additional things that are done to alter wedding dresses to get the best fit other than the usual. These processes are also time consuming and are often overlooked by the bride. When a dress has to be taken in, I remove the boning in the sides of the dress before the fitting starts so I can accurately pin the seams in. This was the "ripping" mentioned in the review. As for the hem issue, I was able to save this bride the cost of a hem by selling her a small hoop, which brought the dress up to the correct length. Of the $300 charge that was mentioned, $35 was charged for repairs and extra handwork and $60 for the hoop. I called the cleaners and was told the dispute was over a small red mark that was two layers inside the dress that could not be seen on the outside. She did not want to pay for the cleaning or pressing. She called the police and they came and agreed with the cleaners that she had to pay! I am 60 years old and my physical status has never affected my work.

I went to a few bridal shops in the Chicagoland area but was mostly disappointed because I didn't fit into most of the sample size dresses. It was hard to imagine myself as a beautiful bride when what I really felt like was a total sausage stuffed and clipped inside tiny dresses. Through a lot of searching, I found a shop that only carries larger size sample dresses. I could actually see what the dress would look like when it was on! I highly recommend the shop (Miss Pamela's) but it was about a 3 hour drive to get there. This brought me to Ruth.

I purchased my dress and brought it to Ruth for alterations. I can't rave enough about Ruth. She is fantastic at what she does. I had purchased a dress I loved but it was a-symmetrical and had a weird bunching on the side that I had dress regret over. I voiced my concern to Ruth and she started releasing stitches to remove the bunching. She fixed it and I was so happy she did! I loved the dress so much more after that minor change!

I had also decided that I wanted to wear heels during the ceremony but change to flat sandals for the reception. Ruth constructed a bustle in the back to match the height of my flat sandals and then engineered a bustle in the front that pulled the front of the dress up so I wasn't stepping on it when I changed to flat shoes. It was amazing! I didn't think we'd be able to find a solution and Ruth pulled it off!

The labeled bustle strings was very helpful when my mother and maid of honor were bustling my dress. And, the bustle (front & back) held strong all night with NO problems. I will be the first to tell you that I was very rough on my dress - we danced all night and I was on and off carousel horses for a bit of time.

Ruth provided a breakdown of everything I was paying for - she fixed the boning on the sides of my dress, added cups (highly recommended!), hemmed the dress and created a back and front bustle! I highly recommend Ruth.

Ruth did an amazing job on my wedding dress and it was a pleasure to work with her. You can tell that Ruth is dedicated to her work and she will make sure your dress is exactly how you imagined it. I was nervous about having a strapless dress but the fitting result put me at ease. The entire dress fit me perfectly. The bustle she created was beautiful and it held up the entire night of dancing. I was impressed by how she was able to create the bustle too since my dress has a lot of elaborate beading. As for the price, it was fair and a lot less than what other places charged. Overall, I'm very happy with my experience and would highly recommend her services.

Ruth did an amazing job with my dress! I'm so glad I found her. She did everything that I needed plus more. She is very experienced and knows shat she is doing. She seamlessly moved a jeweled piece on my dress. I'm plus size so she helped make the dress work for me including sturdy seams. I would highly recommend her!

I used this vendor because of the good reviews on Yelp but was ultimately disappointed. The bustle on my dress that Ruth had created broke very early in the evening and I had to spend most of my time on the dance floor gathering up my train. Also, the alterations cost much more than I had anticipated - over $100 more than I had been quoted at a traditional bridal shop. I had hoped to save money by using Ruth but she doesn't give quotes, so I didn't know until the alterations were complete how much they would be.

When I picked up my dress I was happy with how it turned out. I was however shocked at the final cost. When I called Ruth initially and told her about my dress (strapless, all lace with beading and embroidered detail), she mentioned the cost would be "around $350, give or take but most dresses are between $250-$350". I was thrilled with that pricing and scheduled my appointments.

The office/shop is run out of Ruth's apartment in Downer's Grove; you won't be going to a fancy shop, but you will be in good hands. Ruth is very detailed and knows the tricks of the trade to make a dress fit well. She's been doing this all her life; since she was a kid (we had some nice talks in my hours spent there!)

After 2 fittings, I picked up my dress on the third appointment. She did have to adjust the bustle before I left, which I was happy she did, because she made it lay perfectly the way it should! The cost however, just about blew me away. It was $440. I asked if she could explain the extra costs, above what she'd mentioned in the beginning. She said since she had to let out some fabric in the skirt to add more of the mermaid look, add extra stays so the dress laid flat in the front and back, had to criss-cross (vs. straight stitching) stitch on some of the fabric and then there were a few other things (pressing the edges of the dress, cups) that didn't seem like nearly $100 more than I initially estimated. Future brides be aware of the alterations you're getting and ask about everything!

Also, the hook and eye on the top back of my dress broke even before the ceremony. I am not sure how it happened as I wasn't jumping or bending or anything, but it just popped off and unfortunately from that point forward the zipper on my dress was always 1-10 centimeters down from where it should have been. Sad.
Bustle held up pefectly!

This is a cash-only business, so make sure you stop at the bank before picking up your dress.

Ruth did an absolutely perfect job on my wedding dress alterations. She discovered that my dress had been manufactured incorrectly, and knew enough about sewing my delicate lace to make fix the dress. She was also able to sculpt the dress to perfectly fit me from head to toe. I was even considering whether or not to cut the train off my dress, and she patiently weighed both options and pinned it both ways for me so that I could discover which way I wanted it done. She created the bustle so that each piece was numbered and it was easy for my bridesmaids to bustle it before my reception. She even gave suggestions as to adding in a hoop so that I wouldn't trip on the bottom of my dress while walking at the wedding. She was professional, and she got the dress done exactly when she said she would. I would highly recommend her as an extremely knowledgeable and skilled seamstress!

I reached out to Ruth in early February to discuss wedding dress alterations, she immediately put me at ease when I discussed my dress problems. (Had dress regret and bought a second dress and wasn't sure about that one either) I talked through the issues I had with the second dress and after she saw pictures, she assured me that everything would be fine. I had my fitting in the second week of April and she pinned me up and I was thrilled with the way the dress was going to look when it was finished. She does all the fitting in one session so it does take a little while, but for me, that's much better than having to make several different trips like most salons require. I went to pick up my dress a few weeks later and I was amazed by the all work she did. The dress looked amazing! Ruth added several stays to my bodice, took it in around the bust, ribs, and butt, hemmed it, sewed bra cups in (because I was unsure about what I would be wearing beneath my dress) and she even had several hoops and slips to try on with my dress. I ended choosing a hoop to go beneath my dress. That was really nice, because i doubt I would've bought a hoop for my dress if she hadn't had it available and it really made a huge difference in the way my dress looked. She was a little pricier than I would've wished, but it was definitely quality work and I'm even more excited to get married now! The dress looks great and I can't wait to wear it!!

Ruth knows her stuff!!! She made my mermaid silouette dress fit me perfectly. She offered suggestions on things like adding removable straps (for the dance party) and where to place the sash on my waist (which was also removable). I came from the city each time to do my fitting, and it was worth the travel. I had never met her before (just chose her based on reviews). My favorite part about her is that she is a perfectionist...she will not be done with your dress until she is 100% happy with it. There were a couple things I didn't even notice that she would point out and fix just so it lay right. Contact me if you have any questions. Two things I would point out - she doesn't respond to her email or answer her phone right away always, but don't be alarmed. And secondly, her apt. building was a little daunting because you have to be quiet when you first enter out of respect for other tenants, but she has a quaint bridal room in her unit where you get privacy for your fittings.
