We loved this venue! It's rustic, but still beautiful and provides a great backdrop for a wedding. We got married outside by the gazebo which was gorgeous and perfect for the simplicity we were looking for. Afterwards, we moved to the barn for the reception which was fabulous! I recommend this venue for a smaller wedding - probably 75 to 120 people otherwise it would be quite crowded. Kim was very responsive and flexible for setting up how we wanted the day of. The venue is a little pricey, but for the uniqueness the location provides, it was well worth every penny for us. We loved having our wedding here and would definitely recommend it to couples looking to do something other than the traditional banquet hall setting.

WE LOVED having our wedding at the barn! I received some somewhat negative feedback regarding day-of setup from my friend and the helpfulness of the barn staff, but everything turned out great all around!! Amazing venue!

My husband and I had our wedding at Byron Colby Barn in October. I loved the venue because I wanted a DIY wedding. We were able to pick our own caterer. I created all the decorations with help from family and friends. We provided our own lights, candles and centerpieces. Every aspect of the wedding was something that my husband and I picked our ourselves.

When we first booked the venue, Stan was the coordinator. He was stubborn to deal with, but before our wedding he retired and now Kim is in charge. She is easy to contact and responds timely to messages.

One negative is that on the morning of our wedding, when we were supposed to be able to set up at 9am, the party from the night before had not cleaned up. Why no one from the barn realized this the night before, I don't know. My parents and the family/friends that came to help had to wait at least 1 hour to begin.

We also had an issue with the bartender that we were basically told we had to hire. A bartender from Jim McArdle was "playing games" with a few of our guests to take shots in order to "win" a bottle of liquor. This ended with a few of our guests not being able to walk before the night was over.

I would highly recommend Byron Colby Barn if you are interested in doing a lot of work/crafts to make it your own!!! I absolutely loved it!

LOVED THE BARN. Stan was decent to work with despite a lot of negative reviews from other brides. The only set back to the barn is the crazy rules. Make sure you clearly understand all of the rules before you book or plan your decor. He is not flexible with the rules. Also, this place books very quickly!

I had my wedding on a Friday and it was a great deal for my budget. You will not find a prettier venue in Grayslake - we had so many compliments!

I loved the location for us, very perfect! Stan was a little hard to deal with for there was a decent amount of stuff we couldn't do or have. So that was hard, but everything still turned out gorgeous and everyone had such a great time and absolutely loved it! Our guests are still complimenting us about how gorgeous the place was and how amazing everything turned out!

This venue was absolutely perfect for our day! They were also great with helping us arrange other vendors. They provided an extensive list including; caterers, bartenders, a dj, hotels, florist, wedding planner, and officiant. The only trouble is that Stan runs the barn like a business. On the day of our wedding he showed the barn 4 times while we were setting up, and another couple showed up to our wedding ceremony for a showing! All and all it is really worth it though.

We loved having our wedding here and wouldn't do it any other way. Our wedding was on a gorgeous day in June and we did our ceremony and cocktail hour outside in the square and then the reception inside the barn. The aesthetics of the grounds and the architecture of the barn are just gorgeous! Had it rained, we would have had a candle lit ceremony inside the barn -- so pretty. You can't lose.

Stan is helpful, funny, and knows exactly how to run the Barn smoothly and lay out the space depending on your number of guests. The web site says you can fit 180 but I imagine that could only be without a dance floor or space for a buffet table or band. We had 120, and we sat the bridal party tables end-to-end in the middle of the dance floor, then they were cleared after the meal. It worked. I think the barn was perfect for that number of people.

Bear in mind this is not one-stop shopping. The rental fee is just for the gorgeous space and the tables and chairs. Stan helps ensure your layout is right, the a/c is cranked, and you have everything you need, but you must bring in a caterer who you trust to run the day for you (we chose Dave's Specialty Foods -- see my 5-star review on Yelp). The excellent thing about this set-up is it means you can bring in any caterer. Also you can bring in your own alcohol, saving a ton (as long as your caterer has a licensed bartender of course). We had Binny's deliver our alcohol, and they pick up unused bottles and refund you for them!

If you have any questions about the barn or nearby vendors, please don't hesitate to shoot me a message!

The site itself is really beautiful and you can make it into whatever you want it to be. The wedding before ours looked and had a completely different feel than ours, but it was just the night before.

We had our ceremony out at the gazebo on site and it made for beautiful pictures.

The downside to the barn is Stan, the coordinator. He is not pleasant to work with. His personality is abrupt and overbearing. He didn't know who my husband was on the DAY OF the wedding and at our run-through the week before, he thought we were there to book the site. He does not like email communication and often responds with one word answers. I did not find him to be reliable and had to double and triple check things with him often because I was concerned that he never remembered who I was.

All in all, everything went off without a hitch and it is a beautiful location. If you can put up with Stan, it's well worth it!

The Barn was perfect for our wedding and reception. We were married in the courtyard and we were able to set up the way we wanted. The only issue was we had to rent chairs for outdoors and could not use the chairs from inside the Barn.
The reception was perfect. We had 100 guests at our wedding and it fit everyone comfortably. The Silo was an incredible and unique place for a bar. Everyone loved it! We used the upstairs as a sports area (baseball theme wedding) where people could go to get away from the music but we did not use this for our dinner. All 100 guests fit in the main area.
Stan the contact for the Barn was great. He answered his calls immediately. If you leave a message for him, he returns the call within minutes. Please note, you must have a backbone and KNOW what you're talking about or else his dominating personality will be overwhelming. We set boundries from the beginning and things went very smooth after. He helped us with ideas of the reception layout and allowed us to decorate however needed (no tape on the walls due to the wood walls but had freedom of lights, candles, and decorations in general).
The only downfall is you must have your decorations completely out of the Barn no later than 12:30 am. This made for a long night for those helping to clean up.
The deposit was received within 8 business days...2 days before Stan stated we would receive it. This was a bonus!
I have recommended this place to many people and will continue to do so. This place was PERFECT for us!

The barn is beautiful, and a wonderful place to get married (or just have your reception) as long as you're up to the task of coming up with a plan and executing it on the day of. The vendors that work with the barn (Just Press Play, the iPod DJ; O'Tarpey Rentals; Nancy Rolison, the florist, who is Stan's assistant; the Doubletree Hotel, etc.) are great. As long as you're okay with taking on the job, it's a great value for such a beautiful venue.

In regards to Stan, the coordinator...he knows everything there is to know about the barn, and obviously cares a great deal about preserving its qualities. I did find it annoying that he doesn't do any email, but more or less, he returned phone calls quickly when I left a message (about half the time, he is available and answers the call, though), and during the planning process, he was okay to deal with. Don't be offended if, up until the last 6 weeks before your wedding, he doesn't remember you by name- I think he can only keep track of so much, and prior to those 6 weeks or so, whenever you call him, you're going to have to tell him your name and when your event is. He has a lot of good ideas and for the most part knows what is feasible and not feasible, but don't be afraid to have your own ideas, and as long as it's not destructive to the barn, it's usually okay. I can definitely see where Stan would rub some people the wrong way- he has a very dry sense of humor, and has some strong opinions about how to set up the barn, but I think most of it comes from being so familiar with the barn and from seeing what hasn't worked well with other weddings in the past.

Do make sure- *double-check* that your date is on his calendar, and that all meeting dates that you set up with Stan or other vendors to meet at the barn are on Stan's calendar, and there's no conflicts. We were scheduled to meet our florist there one weekday evening to go over ideas for floral arrangements. Our florist was Stan's assistant and she set up the with Stan and was told no one was using the barn that evening. We all got there and someone was using it for a fundraising event, so we had to haul all the flower samples back to the florist's house and do the meeting there.

One thing to make sure of with the barn itself- if you use the loft for guest seating, make sure they've fixed or replaced the shade that was on the window up there. They had one, but it broke and my guests upstairs were very warm, even with the air conditioning on.

Our only other issue was that it was nearly two weeks after the wedding before Stan deposited the check. You pay a security deposit when you sign the contract to hold the date. Then, I think 10 days before the event, you're supposed to pay the fee. Once that check clears and the event is over and there's no damage or clean-up required at the barn, he sends back your security deposit. It wasn't a big deal, just a little weird since we could have stopped payment on the check and they'd have no real recourse.

Anyway, to sum up- great place to get married, Stan is okay to work with as long as you follow the rules of the barn, and double-confirm things with him.
