The Byron Colby Barn is an amazing venue for any of you do-it-yourself brides out there! It's a beautiful, historic, and rustic building and the market square courtyard is perfect for an outdoor ceremony/cocktail hour.
Kim is very professional and timely - she even texts which is super handy!
I highly recommend this venue!

We loved this venue! It's rustic, but still beautiful and provides a great backdrop for a wedding. We got married outside by the gazebo which was gorgeous and perfect for the simplicity we were looking for. Afterwards, we moved to the barn for the reception which was fabulous! I recommend this venue for a smaller wedding - probably 75 to 120 people otherwise it would be quite crowded. Kim was very responsive and flexible for setting up how we wanted the day of. The venue is a little pricey, but for the uniqueness the location provides, it was well worth every penny for us. We loved having our wedding here and would definitely recommend it to couples looking to do something other than the traditional banquet hall setting.

My husband and I had our wedding at Byron Colby Barn in October. I loved the venue because I wanted a DIY wedding. We were able to pick our own caterer. I created all the decorations with help from family and friends. We provided our own lights, candles and centerpieces. Every aspect of the wedding was something that my husband and I picked our ourselves.

When we first booked the venue, Stan was the coordinator. He was stubborn to deal with, but before our wedding he retired and now Kim is in charge. She is easy to contact and responds timely to messages.

One negative is that on the morning of our wedding, when we were supposed to be able to set up at 9am, the party from the night before had not cleaned up. Why no one from the barn realized this the night before, I don't know. My parents and the family/friends that came to help had to wait at least 1 hour to begin.

We also had an issue with the bartender that we were basically told we had to hire. A bartender from Jim McArdle was "playing games" with a few of our guests to take shots in order to "win" a bottle of liquor. This ended with a few of our guests not being able to walk before the night was over.

I would highly recommend Byron Colby Barn if you are interested in doing a lot of work/crafts to make it your own!!! I absolutely loved it!

LOVED THE BARN. Stan was decent to work with despite a lot of negative reviews from other brides. The only set back to the barn is the crazy rules. Make sure you clearly understand all of the rules before you book or plan your decor. He is not flexible with the rules. Also, this place books very quickly!

I had my wedding on a Friday and it was a great deal for my budget. You will not find a prettier venue in Grayslake - we had so many compliments!

I loved the location for us, very perfect! Stan was a little hard to deal with for there was a decent amount of stuff we couldn't do or have. So that was hard, but everything still turned out gorgeous and everyone had such a great time and absolutely loved it! Our guests are still complimenting us about how gorgeous the place was and how amazing everything turned out!

This venue was absolutely perfect for our day! They were also great with helping us arrange other vendors. They provided an extensive list including; caterers, bartenders, a dj, hotels, florist, wedding planner, and officiant. The only trouble is that Stan runs the barn like a business. On the day of our wedding he showed the barn 4 times while we were setting up, and another couple showed up to our wedding ceremony for a showing! All and all it is really worth it though.

We loved having our wedding here and wouldn't do it any other way. Our wedding was on a gorgeous day in June and we did our ceremony and cocktail hour outside in the square and then the reception inside the barn. The aesthetics of the grounds and the architecture of the barn are just gorgeous! Had it rained, we would have had a candle lit ceremony inside the barn -- so pretty. You can't lose.

Stan is helpful, funny, and knows exactly how to run the Barn smoothly and lay out the space depending on your number of guests. The web site says you can fit 180 but I imagine that could only be without a dance floor or space for a buffet table or band. We had 120, and we sat the bridal party tables end-to-end in the middle of the dance floor, then they were cleared after the meal. It worked. I think the barn was perfect for that number of people.

Bear in mind this is not one-stop shopping. The rental fee is just for the gorgeous space and the tables and chairs. Stan helps ensure your layout is right, the a/c is cranked, and you have everything you need, but you must bring in a caterer who you trust to run the day for you (we chose Dave's Specialty Foods -- see my 5-star review on Yelp). The excellent thing about this set-up is it means you can bring in any caterer. Also you can bring in your own alcohol, saving a ton (as long as your caterer has a licensed bartender of course). We had Binny's deliver our alcohol, and they pick up unused bottles and refund you for them!

If you have any questions about the barn or nearby vendors, please don't hesitate to shoot me a message!

The site itself is really beautiful and you can make it into whatever you want it to be. The wedding before ours looked and had a completely different feel than ours, but it was just the night before.

We had our ceremony out at the gazebo on site and it made for beautiful pictures.

The downside to the barn is Stan, the coordinator. He is not pleasant to work with. His personality is abrupt and overbearing. He didn't know who my husband was on the DAY OF the wedding and at our run-through the week before, he thought we were there to book the site. He does not like email communication and often responds with one word answers. I did not find him to be reliable and had to double and triple check things with him often because I was concerned that he never remembered who I was.

All in all, everything went off without a hitch and it is a beautiful location. If you can put up with Stan, it's well worth it!

The Barn was perfect for our wedding and reception. We were married in the courtyard and we were able to set up the way we wanted. The only issue was we had to rent chairs for outdoors and could not use the chairs from inside the Barn.
The reception was perfect. We had 100 guests at our wedding and it fit everyone comfortably. The Silo was an incredible and unique place for a bar. Everyone loved it! We used the upstairs as a sports area (baseball theme wedding) where people could go to get away from the music but we did not use this for our dinner. All 100 guests fit in the main area.
Stan the contact for the Barn was great. He answered his calls immediately. If you leave a message for him, he returns the call within minutes. Please note, you must have a backbone and KNOW what you're talking about or else his dominating personality will be overwhelming. We set boundries from the beginning and things went very smooth after. He helped us with ideas of the reception layout and allowed us to decorate however needed (no tape on the walls due to the wood walls but had freedom of lights, candles, and decorations in general).
The only downfall is you must have your decorations completely out of the Barn no later than 12:30 am. This made for a long night for those helping to clean up.
The deposit was received within 8 business days...2 days before Stan stated we would receive it. This was a bonus!
I have recommended this place to many people and will continue to do so. This place was PERFECT for us!

The barn is beautiful, and a wonderful place to get married (or just have your reception) as long as you're up to the task of coming up with a plan and executing it on the day of. The vendors that work with the barn (Just Press Play, the iPod DJ; O'Tarpey Rentals; Nancy Rolison, the florist, who is Stan's assistant; the Doubletree Hotel, etc.) are great. As long as you're okay with taking on the job, it's a great value for such a beautiful venue.

In regards to Stan, the coordinator...he knows everything there is to know about the barn, and obviously cares a great deal about preserving its qualities. I did find it annoying that he doesn't do any email, but more or less, he returned phone calls quickly when I left a message (about half the time, he is available and answers the call, though), and during the planning process, he was okay to deal with. Don't be offended if, up until the last 6 weeks before your wedding, he doesn't remember you by name- I think he can only keep track of so much, and prior to those 6 weeks or so, whenever you call him, you're going to have to tell him your name and when your event is. He has a lot of good ideas and for the most part knows what is feasible and not feasible, but don't be afraid to have your own ideas, and as long as it's not destructive to the barn, it's usually okay. I can definitely see where Stan would rub some people the wrong way- he has a very dry sense of humor, and has some strong opinions about how to set up the barn, but I think most of it comes from being so familiar with the barn and from seeing what hasn't worked well with other weddings in the past.

Do make sure- *double-check* that your date is on his calendar, and that all meeting dates that you set up with Stan or other vendors to meet at the barn are on Stan's calendar, and there's no conflicts. We were scheduled to meet our florist there one weekday evening to go over ideas for floral arrangements. Our florist was Stan's assistant and she set up the with Stan and was told no one was using the barn that evening. We all got there and someone was using it for a fundraising event, so we had to haul all the flower samples back to the florist's house and do the meeting there.

One thing to make sure of with the barn itself- if you use the loft for guest seating, make sure they've fixed or replaced the shade that was on the window up there. They had one, but it broke and my guests upstairs were very warm, even with the air conditioning on.

Our only other issue was that it was nearly two weeks after the wedding before Stan deposited the check. You pay a security deposit when you sign the contract to hold the date. Then, I think 10 days before the event, you're supposed to pay the fee. Once that check clears and the event is over and there's no damage or clean-up required at the barn, he sends back your security deposit. It wasn't a big deal, just a little weird since we could have stopped payment on the check and they'd have no real recourse.

Anyway, to sum up- great place to get married, Stan is okay to work with as long as you follow the rules of the barn, and double-confirm things with him.

The venue itself was GREAT! It is exactly what we wanted. It was such a homey place to have a wedding reception. It held 160 people comfortably (and it CAN accommodate up to 180). There is a silo where you can put your bar, the tables on the lower level are unique because they are original, wooden tables from the barn and they are long, rather than round and the lighting in there at night is just right. A lot of people put up white lights but we simply used candles and it turned out great.

If you are looking for a barn, then it is worth taking a look at. Unfortunately, Stan, the manager for the barn, is what gave this venue the lower rating. Up until the wedding, he was pretty easy to work. He does have clear rules/expectations for you can and cannot do at the barn but at least he lays them out on the table for you. The problem actually happened on the day of the wedding. He came to me and my father and told me that we need to move the bar out of the silo because it is too cold and the bartenders and guests are going to be freezing. We had already addressed this with him months before the wedding because our wedding date was Jan. 2nd, of course it would be cold! We had even made sure the bartenders our caterer was providing were completely comfortable working in a silo, in the middle of winter, with no heat. He then suggested that in order to do that, we could just take away a guest table and use it for the bar. Therefore, implying I would have to redo all of the table assignments and just not have a place for 10 guests to sit. My dad and I tried to be very reasonable with him and he got in my fathers face and told him to shut-up and that he was obnoxious! Unfortunately, the complete unprofessionalism and rudeness of this man put a damper on the morning of my wedding.

I must say our reception was perfect, despite this man. So please, if you are looking for a barn, check it out. Just beware of Stan and don't let him try to take control of something that has nothing to do with him.

Stan is not much of a wedding planner. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on the degree to which you need his assistance. My fiancee went in with a fairly clear idea of what we wanted and our own decorator to assist us. Stan can be a bit pushy and doesn't have a great deal of imagination when it comes to layouts or decoration.

The barn is tremendous as a blank canvas - the woodwork and the silo and the layout are all excellent, providing you have a good idea as to what you plan to do and have the confidence to tell Stan flatly what you do and do not want. He always got back to us quickly and the price is more than fair.

I thought the venue in the beginning was small and the bar was going to be cramped. I also didn't like that my guests were going to be secluded upstairs, but Stan the barn coordinator had a rebuttal for everything I wasn't sure about. So in turn I changed my mind because the barn is beautiful and something different. Well I didn't know how pushy and rude he was going to be when I asked him about moving chairs around or about setting up Thursday night to make my great day less stressful. He will not be there while you are setting up if you have problems or questions the day of, which was not helpful when I ran into the problem that I did. So the problem starts when I was not aloud to get in there until 9:00 am to decorate, which was four hours before my hair appointment. Then I sent people to put each item on the tables per chair and in the end the tables were missing chairs. Downstairs should have had 10 chairs per table, some had 6, 7 or 8 and a few had ten. Upstairs there should have been 8 chairs per table there were six per table. So I was already rushing when I ran into this problem, so we had to keep counting the items on the tables and searching for chairs. When I called him he couldn't bother to come there he said to count them again and told us where we could find more chairs. This issue took an hour out of my time and stressed me to the maximum at this point I started crying. I had to leave for my hair appointment and hope that my maid of honor could take care of the issue. I also had an issue with the lighting, nobody explained to me I needed to know how to work the lighting with eight different switches, so after 2 hours into my reception my guest upstairs were almost in pitch black darkness, I mean they said they could barely make out the faces across the table. Also during dancing the lights were bright not dim like they should have been. At midnight when my reception ended I had to scramble and clean every decoration and piece that I brought there instead of enjoying the rest of my night with my new husband. Now I am still waiting for my deposit 9 days later than the contract stated. When I called him and asked him for the owners info he said there is no way I am going to give that to you and hung up on me. Be prepared for a very rude event coordinator. I would not recommend this venue until there is a new coordinator.

The venue itself is perfect. I searched high and low all over the Chicago area before I found the Byron Colby Barn and it was well worth the wait. I was looking for something unique, beautiful and different and I got all three with the barn. Everyone kept telling me how beautiful the barn was and how the wedding was perfect and a big reason was for this barn. You can fit about 100 people on the main floor with a buffet and dance floor. There is a loft upstairs where you can seat more people but I think 100 is the most you can have here without people feeling like they're outsiders upsiders. I also used the loft as a dressing area so that worked really well. The main floor has windows all around and at night it looks amazing in candlelight. We hardly needed to use any additional decorations because the place itself is so nice. There is also a silo that's really cool and is used as a bar. There's a gazebo where you can have your ceremony (we didn't use it) for an extra fee or you can have the ceremony right outside the barn in the courtyard. Unfortunately for us it rained but we moved it inside without a problem and it actually worked out better for us.
My only complaint would be the contact person. Overall he was OK to work with but I was really busy with planning and he would never respond by e-mail (which in this day and age is key when trying to plan a wedding, I think). Also our check for the fee somehow got lost in the mail and then Stan, the manager, said the day before I had to give either nearly $2,000 in cash or cashier's check to pay so that is something to note: Make sure you get the check in early or be prepared to pay, literally. This was annoying because it wasn't our fault the check hadn't arrived and when your wedding venue is nearly an hour away from where you live, it's added stress to find even more money that quickly when you're already freaking out and trying to pay the other vendors. They absolutely would not accept another check the day of so I was scrambling around the day of between picking up my cake, getting my hair done, decorating the barn and scraping up the cash. I understand they just want their money but we were good for it and I didn't appreciate that extra stress. Also nearly 2 weeks later I haven't received my security deposit so I find it irritating how I had to scramble around at the last minute to get the cash when I can't even get my security deposit on a timely basis. Also the day after when I thought I had left something there and wanted to go back, he kept telling me to come back the next day and wasn't accomodating (mind you I live more than an hour away and was going on my honeymoon so traipsing back and forth to the burbs was not an ideal situation). Luckily I had the items I was looking for and didn't have to go back but he was acting like he couldn't be bothered. Also, this didn't bother me at all, but there are teens/young adults (I think his son and friends?) on site during the wedding. I didnt have a problem with them and they were fine but just FYI if that bothers you. But that little annoyance was well worth it to have a beautiful wedding. He also helped at the last minute to change the ceremony indoors when the wedding wasn't cooperative. I would definitely have my wedding there again despite those things I mentioned. The location and scenery can't be beat.

The barn allowed us to decorate in the fashion we choose and it was gorgeous! Stan was really easy to work with and always had the answer to any of the my questions. It was very organized and allowed to me be more relaxed. The max is 180, but I would recommend it for smaller weddings.

Our wedding was perfect. It was exactly what my husband and I wanted - simple but elegant. We had our ceremony outside in the courtyard - not only did we have perfect weather but the backdrop was incredible. And the venue is amazing for pictures if you hire a more of artsy/documentary photographer (which, I recommend) - jilldevries.net. :)

The reception was perfect for us. We had about 200 guests, which I believe, is the perfect amount - not too big and not too small. Everyone complimented on the "perfect wedding" and how amazing the venue was. It didn't feel like a closed off reception hall, but added something different, which every guest loved.

Yes, you have to do everything yourself, but you know that from day one of signing the contract. If you don't have people to help day of, probably not the place - but if you do, you can turn the venue into your dream come true.

If you want a wedding where you can control all the vendors you involve, including your caterer, Byron Colby is the place to go. Rent the space, and you have a blank canvass for however you want your day to proceed. Stan was laid back and worked with us to coordinate the pieces that the barn contributed - use of the courtyard, tables and chairs, kitchen information for the caterer, etc. We had a great day in this unique space.

The Barn in itself is beautiful. The person in charge of running the venue is a nightmare. He is rude and argumentative. There are a list of items you are not allowed to have such as tape on the walls, etc. While setting up the day of the wedding he comes up with another list not in the contract. My friends were running around all day trying to accomodate him. Everytime my set up person called me I could hear him screaming at her in the back ground. He refused to turn the air on any higher and the venue became sticky and unpleasant. I would not recomend using this venue until they employ someone with people skills.

This barn is beautiful, unique, and overall, a perfect fit for anyone's wedding. After we decorated, I cannot tell you how elegant the room looked with white christmas lights and off-white linens. I received countless numbers of compliments on the setting for the day (we had our ceremony in the courtyard just below the barn and the reception inside).

Stan was very helpful and knowledgeable - prompt in returning calls.

We highly recommend this venue! A+++

This is a community center by day, charming elegant barn by night. The organizer is friendly and opinionated at the same time. Pretty flexible with smaller budgets - helpful with suggestions of caterers, etc. The barn was exactly;y the unique, charming setting I wanted. It was pretty cramped with 175 people, but we had a lot of fun!

The Barn at Prairie Crossing was one of the highlights of our wedding - we received so many compliments on it from our guests. The setting is so picturesque. We were able to contract with our own caterer, which saved us a lot of money and allowed us to be more flexible with what we wanted to serve than if we had gone with a traditional banquet facility. The Barn decorated for Christmas was beautiful. The site contact, however, was fairly inflexible and particular about the way he wanted things done. We hired a wedding planner, and I could tell he wasn't pleased that he couldn't run the entire show his way. He had restrictions on everything - which chairs could go where, etc. I lost my cell phone at the event and, when we called the next day, he was not very willing to help. He was a bit of a pain to work with, but to get the beautiful setting, I would do it all again.

The place was gorgeous, and just what we wanted. The only drawback was that they did not want us to decorate the day before until after 3pm.
They were very prompt in communications, and always did what they said. The contract even said, No Chicken Dance song! It was perfect for us.
The gazebo was the perfect place for the ceremony, too-- the sun set right behind us over the pond, and was absolutely gorgeous for the pictures.
