I approach weddings with a quiet presence and an eye for authenticity. In practice, this entails moving with a calm demeanor and a desire to remain unnoticed, finding small moments of intimacy in the midst of public celebrations. Aside from the requisite group photos, I anticipate and document moments as they naturally occur, with direction or interference. My ultimate goal is a highly personal book that is both beautiful and meaningful, recognizing that authenticity is integral to that meaning. Read less

INFO FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

What primary photographic style do you identify with?
Photojournalism, Portraiture
What do your packages include?
Albums, Digital Files, Flush Mount, High Resolution Images, Matted Prints, Prints, Proof CD of All Images, Thank You Cards
Do you have liability insurance?
Yes
Do you offer special techniques such as hand-coloring or toning?
Nothing is more compelling than a fact clearly stated. I don't use special effects, selective color, etc. I think images need to stand on their own.
Do you have experience shooting in various lighting situations?
While I prefer to work with available light, I supplement with flash when necessary. My own lighting is indirect and often coming from the side, so-called Rembrandt lighting. I like images to have depth, dimension, shadows. This is particularly important in B&W.
Is your media preference film or digital?
I'm working 100% in digital, though my aesthetics are still those of B&W film, which I printed in the darkroom for years. I prefer to do the documentary work in B&W, though in this digital age any picture can be had in color upon request. I tend to make group pictures in color.
How many photographers do you work with?
I sometimes work with an assistant, but I am usually the sole photographer. It's hard to delegate style or judgment, and I've found most photographers of genuine ability would rather be shooting their own weddings. There are some situations, such as ceremonies with limited possibilities for movement, when a second shooter can be helpful.
Do you guarantee your presence at the actual event?
I do not run a studio operation or farm out my weddings to others. You hire me for my eye, you get me.
Do you sometimes book yourself for more than one event in a day? Weekend?
It's simply not possible. A wedding is an undertaking, and there are preparations, planning and logistics which consume most of the day, regardless of the duration of the shoot. Doing good work is physically and mentally demanding, and I want to be able to give my best.
Do you have a replacement photographer in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?
I work with a roster of photographers whom I would consider to be my competition. We will substitute for each other if it ever becomes necessary, and it is in our collective best interests to do so. I wouldn't pass off work to an assistant or someone who isn't an experienced, established photojournalist.
What kind of equipment do you typically bring with you on the day-of?
A couple bodies, prime and zoom lenses, portable and studio flashes.
Do you bring back-up equipment to the event in case of malfunction?
I generally bring more equipment than I think I'll need, and there is built-in redundancy in case of problems. I work with more than one camera body, each of which has multiple card slots so that even in the rare case of a card failure everything is still intact on the backup. I have zoom lenses and prime lenses that cover the same range, so that if I have a problem with one lens other lenses can do similar pictures. I bring 3 portable flashes and 2-3 stand-mounted lights. I bring my own power supplies. I try to keep things simple when I photograph, but I have backups for everything.
Do you charge hourly or full day?
I have a flat rate for a block of up to eight hours. If additional time is needed, I do so on an hourly basis.
Are you available to shoot extra hours? If yes, how much do you charge for extra hours?
$250
What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
Usually a brief one for protein and calories. I'll stop to hydrate, but I often end up leaving my glass half way through because I've run off to shoot something else. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to hide it first so that the caterers don't carry it away!
Do you charge for travel?
I include up to an hour of travel each way free of charge, possibly more if the shooting and travel come to less than ten hours. I usually work in an hour for preparation or setup on location, but I don't count that as part of the clients' block of time. For more than an hour outside of Washington, I charge on a case-by-case basis. I'm available nationally and abroad.
How soon after the event are the proofs ready for viewing?
Within two weeks, usually within a few days. I push everything else aside and concentrate on getting the pictures edited, processed and available as soon as possible.
In what format are the initial proofs offered?
They're available online shortly after the wedding, and in the form of 4x6 prints approximately a week later along with the digital files.
How long can the client keep the proofs?
As long as they want. There are no watermarks or writing or other such nonsense.
Do you retain the copyright for the photos?
I reserve the copyright for all my work, but that only concerns issues of publishing. People are free to do what they want for personal use.
Do you reserve the right to publish the photos?
I have photos run in bridal magazines and other outlets, but I check with the client first.
Do you provide the digital files and/or negatives (or copies of the negatives) to the client?
My standard package contains 1,000px JPEGs, which are huge for the screen or social media and from which small prints can be made. I offer the option of very high-res files from which the client can make large prints without restriction.
Will images be available for viewing online?
Yes.
What kind of albums do you offer?
Flush-mount and printed books from a number of manufacterers, including Leather Craftsmen, PictoBooks and others. I'm frequently trying and experimenting with different outlets and approaches.
When will the client get the final album?
Between 1-3 months of the order, sometimes less. It depends on the amount of work required for the specific images, and the demand at the binders, where the work is very labor-intensive.

I cannot speak highly enough about Carl. I'm a photographer myself (not even near his caliber but a photographer nonetheless) and therefore was very critical about this aspect of our big day. After an insane amount of researching, I stumbled across Carl's website when searching for documentary wedding photographers and his work is incredible. It's crisp and candid and catches the moments that years down the road you will treasure even more. He's hilarious when doing the group photos especially when guests are nearby. He understands these are important to the couple but also knows that the meat of the images are the ones when no one is watching and are the ones that 10 years down the road when the shot of the newlyweds standing in a field embracing is no longer posted on the wall above their bed will still be just as cherished as the first day you viewed them, therefore he keeps the posed photos short and sweet. This is also nice because it shortens the time between the ceremony and reception that the guests have to mill around. I definitely recommend working with Carl if his style suits yours!

I almost didn't hire a photographer for my wedding. Why devote so much of your budget to professional pictures when friends and family will surely give you dozens of shots? Two months after the big day, I can say that photography is the most important aspect of your wedding, as long as you hire the right person.

Carl represents what wedding photography should be. Too often, I look through friends' albums and find photos of typical wedding moments, along with hundreds of posed photos that in no way represent the couple I know. Carl is the answer to this.. taking candid shots while letting the ceremony and reception takes its natural course. The photos he gave me were honest and sometimes irreverent, but still optimistic.. focusing on moments of true intimacy. I was also grateful that he zeroed in on my family and friends.. an event of that magnitude should focus on more than the bride and groom.

I have nothing but good things to say about how Carl runs his business. I didn't email him much after the contract was signed, but when I decided I wanted the photos taken in color (rather than black and white) he happily obliged. Both of my parents called me to tell me how nice he'd been with helping them order prints.

I suppose rating a photographer's "value" is a personal thing. I've looked at my wedding photos hundreds of time since I got married, and will cherish them for the rest of my life. They are both technically-superior and artistic. The perspectives are astute, but don't feel forced. Most importantly, they captured the essence of everyone who's important to me, on the most important day of my life. I would say that's good value.

There are not enough good things that I could say about Carl and his work. From the moment I saw his images, I feel in love with his work and his eye. Carl's images are about the moment. He is present and so his images are real. Alive. Once we met, his calm demeanor was comforting and day of, he iwas on fire. On the floor, in between folks, behind folks. Everywhere but in shadows. He captured all the best moments and in such a poetic way. He was accommodating, professional and artistic. We splurged, but it was well worth it.

Dear Carl,

The wedding photos are phenomenal! It is absolutely extraordinary to look at the collection of photos you sent us and see hundreds of shots that are magazine ready/worthy! Our parents took a look at them and can’t quite figure out which photos they will NOT order!

Thanks for doing an incredible job in capturing our day in film. We are so glad that we entrusted the responsibility to you. These photos have a quality that surpasses video. One image can invoke the emotion, cue the sounds and context of that moment in the past. The black and white photos look timeless. The color photos are a harmonious explosion of colors. I know we were standing outside, but they look like they were taken in the tranquility found indoors – with an amazing back drop!

We have no idea how you even captured half of the photos. The angles, the closeness, the distance, the perspectives are astounding – especially, when we didn’t even see you do it! You have an uncanny sense of anticipation. How you managed to capture the exact moment when I gave a thumbs up to a friend while walking down the isle or when the ring bearer decided to slide down the stairs is remarkable. Thank You! We hope you will consider being our photographer for our next major celebration!

Sincerely,

Ericka & Brandon

Carl was a great photographer to work with and his pictures came out absolutely stunning. His work is in the photojournalism style, so for people who want posed, color pictures, this is not the photographer for you. Once we decided that we liked his work (from looking at the wedding pictures on his website), we set up a time to meet him. He explained his process and showed many wedding albums. The albums alone are gorgeous (although we have yet to order one). We lost touch with Carl until a few weeks before the wedding. We panicked a bit because 3-weeks before we left many voice and email messages for him so that we could talk about the wedding day and how things would work, and he didn't respond because he was away and then sick. Eventually we got in touch and things came together well. Carl is very unobtrusive in his work (I hardly knew he was there), but he is everywhere getting shots of the action and non-action. He has a great sense of humor which I enjoyed alot. He also appeased my parents requests of shooting 10-12 posed color pictures of family members. In summary, we were thrilled with the end product and were glad we chose him to shoot our wedding.

We have nothing but positive things to say about our experience with Carl. We have found him to be very responsive and easy to work with. Perhaps even more important, we are thrilled with the pictures that he took at our wedding. He truly has an amazing ability to capture unique moments in his photographs. He is a photo-journalist so he avoids being noticed. In fact, he is so adept at blending in, we don’t remember seeing him much. Of course, after seeing the photos from our wedding, he clearly was working hard throughout. We can also attest that the sample photos from his website are an accurate representation of what one’s wedding photos will look like – if you love his portfolio, you’ll love your wedding pictures. While Carl is at his best when taking candid photos, he will also take a limited number of group posed pictures if you request them. He is amazingly efficient when taking posed pictures, which is great because that way, you aren’t away from your guests for very long. All-in-all, we would highly recommend Carl.

Carl is a photojournalist, so you have to love that style of photography to work with him. He has great vision and an amazing eye for catching unbelievable moments. We couldn't have asked for more beautiful wedding memories. HIGHLY Recommended.
