I'm writing 2 different reviews - one for engagement pictures and one for wedding day pictures
I was referred to Daniel by my SIL, who used him for her various photos in the past. Her pictures seemed to be pretty cool, with some nice filters & the technique & style we were looking for.
Daniel & I spoke on the phone to discuss our venue, style etc & to let him know we wanted the engagement pics to be done in our hometown of DC. All seemed well. We scheduled the engagement session. I had my make-up appt set & we had a hotel booked for Daniel (per the contract). I received an email from Daniel the NIGHT BEFORE he was supposed to be in DC to let me know he had come down with the flu & that we would have to reschedule. I responded letting him know how I thought it was unprofessional & such an inconvenience to not only be emailing me, rather than immediately calling me, but to be cancelling the night before. When I mentioned getting my money back per the contract, he quickly responded to this saying that if this was the only day we were available that he would make it work. It wasn’t going to work.
We scheduled another engagement session with him. He arrived in DC, at our house, & we drove into the city together during an extremely awkward ride: he didn’t remember how I found him/booked him, we found out his IQ, his yearly income & his thoughts on religion. Off to a great start. My fiancé & I each had one picture request. I wanted a shot of us in front of the bar at which we met. We got only 2 shots of this location. In one of them there was a man walking in front of us. In the other my eyes are closed. My fiancé wanted an upward angled shot of the pillars on the Lincoln Memorial-which didn’t happen. We received fewer than 100 pictures - about 10 were usable. An incredible amount of pictures had eyes closed, mouths in mid-conversation or just not being ready for the picture. There was also tons of forcibly posed pictures – not what we described as our style.

Fast forward 8 months to the wedding day. Daniel was kind of just hanging out in the bridal suite which was a bit awkward & as a result there are SO many shots of me & my girls getting ready. Again, I had one request for a picture. A full length shot of the back of my dress with no bustle. And again, I was left disappointed. Not a single picture of the entire back of the bride’s dress?! We definitely got enough pictures of me & my husband; however, there isn’t a single picture of any guest at the entire cocktail hour, except ONE, of my side of the family that his assistant took, because we asked him to. We also did not get any pictures of the guests at their tables during the reception.
At some point Daniel (& his assistant) disappeared from the reception. Someone later told me they saw Daniel down at the gazebo (about 50 yards away from the reception tent). We got 2 pictures from what I believe he was doing down there. I can only assume he was using this time for his own enjoyment. Neither of them said goodbye at the end of the night either. Odd.
I asked Daniel to further edit a few images after viewing them on his site. It took him 2 weeks to even begin the requested editing - you’d think a professional photographer would see the same problems in a photo as I did!! Not only am I disappointed in there being a lack of pictures of our guests, it took 14 weeks (from wedding date) for me to receive the digital pictures.
Overall we felt Daniel did not listen to our requests & took pictures he thought would be cool or took pictures for his personal use. There hasn’t been an update to his website or to his Facebook site in a year & a half, & you can see from these reviews there hasn’t been one in almost 2 years. I think it’s safe to say his hay day has come & gone.

Daniels work truly speaks for itself! We hired Darkershadesofbrown to photograph our wedding, and we could not be more thrilled with our photos. In addition to the many amazing photos of our big day, Daniel and his second shooter were a joy to be around. It's nice when your photographer feels more like a friend than cold paparazzi on your wedding day. Highly recommend Daniel!

When I first met Daniel I was really excited about our engagement and wedding photos with him. The engagement session went great and I really liked the pictures. After that, everything went downhill. Daniel friended me on facebook (personal page, BEFORE my wedding) and starting posting strong opinions about weddings, brides, and other hot topics such as politics and religion, making me feel uncomfortable at times. In my opinion, not very professional. When the big day came he showed up in cargo pants, standing out like a sore thumb at my formal wedding. The whole night I constantly felt as if I needed to please him as he was unhappy with the photography rules at my church and unhappy with my choice of DJ. I almost felt as if he was the star of the show and my husband and I were second. When the night ended I looked around for Daniel to say goodbye...but he was nowhere to be found. I have no idea when he left as the party ended not even five minutes after the scheduled time. Who knows when he actually packed up and went, but a goodbye would have been appreciated. Nights over. Im holding on to the fact that I like his pictures and that will make everything ok. Over 9 weeks later (Which is totally ok according to our contract) our pictures were up on his website. No joke, I think I cried for 3 hours. Not to say the pictures were bad (I actually grew to really like a lot of them), I think I just had higher expectations for them. The Darkershadesofbrown website shows plenty of super creative, gorgeous photos of brides that I just felt I was missing. I spent money on a beautiful cathedral length veil that I ended up not having any professional pictures of. I chose Daniel because I loved and appreciated his style of photography, however, I felt he kind of slacked on my wedding day due to a bad mood he was in. Overall, I would be lying to say I didn't love a lot of my wedding pictures. I only wish I felt more comfortable and important on my wedding day.

Still wiping away the tears after viewing the BEAUTIFUL images of our special day.

We had the pleasure of working with Daniel who immediately put us at ease. It's wonderful to work with a photographer who knows the venue Skytop Lodge so well. He maximized our time together, ensuring that we got the images that were important to us as well as the ones he knew would be priceless. We even had time to be whisked off to take advantage of the gorgeous day and get some shots in a contrasting down the rod in Buck Hill. His emphasis on genuine emotion, rather than just environment is what truly sets Daniel apart from so many other wedding photographers. The photographs perfectly capture how happy we were.

Thank you, Daniel for giving us such cherished images!

My husband and I were both in a wedding that Darkershadesofbrown Photography photographed two years ago and when we got engaged we knew there was only one person we wanted to work with. He worked with us for both our wedding and our engagement photos and we could not be happier. Our engagement photos were taken in New York and Daniel came down to meet us for the day. Daniel was one of the best decisions we made in regards to our wedding. Our photography is simply stunning and we could not be happier.

We came across Daniel's amazing work serendipitously- we were weeks away from our wedding and needed a new photographer. After we explained our horrific story with the original photographer we had hired, he went above and beyond and acted more like a great old friend. AND gave us some amazing, inspiring pictures ! On top of all the already amazing things he did for us, he was able to help work within our budget, despite the fact that his expertise and time were worth so much more.

We most definitely reccommend working with Daniel and we can't wait for another reason to work with him in the future! Thanks again, Daniel!

After waiting over 14 weeks for our wedding photos, we finally receive an envelope with a DVD and a refund check. There was no phone call, letter or explanation for the refund. I later received an email from Daniel, explaining he had supposedly used a corrupt memory card and some of the photos were lost. “Some” is an understatement. We did not receive any prewedding photos, wedding party photos, ceremony photos, family portraits, bride portraits, groom portraits… We have four photos of my husband and I posing and a bunch of reception photos. We are so sad. We had such a beautiful day and barely anything to document it. We understand that some things are out of anyone’s control, but we thought that by choosing a more expensive photographer, we would get quality, professionalism and “peace-of mind.”
We are especially disappointed that Daniel did not call us to explain or apologize and he waited so long to tell us. We felt as if he washed his hands of the situation by mailing a check… We didn’t want our money back, we wanted wedding photos! After several attempts, we were finally able to speak with him on the phone. He made no attempt to make this right. He didn’t even offer a session to “re-do” some photos or complimentary prints. As if our money back was enough!
Daniel may get high ratings when everything goes as planned, but a true measure of character and professionalism is best evaluated in less than perfect circumstances.

One of the best decisions we made about our wedding was our wedding photographer. Daniel was a pleasure to work with and took us to NY City for our engagement session which was a big deal for us because that is where we met. On the wedding day he fit in perfectly with our wedding party and everybody for months told us about how incredible our pictures were. I can't say enough about Daniel and his photography. We will have these pictures for a lifetime and we are so glad we choose Darkershadesofbrown Photography to capture our wedding.
