Quality of Service - We had a big problem with our hosted bar at our wedding. There was a high school reunion in the banquet room next to our wedding and the attendees kept stealing drinks from our hosted bar on our tab. After being notified of the problem, the hotel workers were slow to stop the pilfering and even accused us of making things up. Instead of proactively trying to make up for this problem, the hotel fought hard against providing a reasonable write-off for the stolen drinks.

Responsiveness - There were a lot of communication problems with the changeover from the Kyoto Grand Hotel to the Doubletree. The main employees we worked with at the Kyoto left and their replacements were not nearly as responsive. They are hard to get in touch with over the phone and their e-mail skills are lacking.

Professionalism - See above. In addition, the employees have a tendency to blame each other and not take responsibility for their own actions. They all claim to lack the authority to do much of anything.

Value - The rooftop garden is beautiful. The ballrooms on the banquet level are boring and outdated. The layout is also poor because all the banquet rooms are right next to each other. As a result, it's difficult to keep groups separate.

Flexibility - The lack of responsiveness made it difficult to coordinate with the hotel. Also, the hotel workers lacked the flexibility to quickly and efficiently stop the reunion attendees from taking drinks.

We loved our wedding at the Kyoto Grand Hotel and Gardens. Shalom and her staff were always open to meeting with us, and responded to emails in a timely manner. The day of the wedding was beautiful. However, we had been told that setup could begin at 5 pm in the garden area, and when we got there, the other group was still there. It caused a bit of a time crunch for the other vendors, but things got done. Overall, it was a beautiful venue, and the food was great (especially the lamb chop appetizers). Many guests complimented us on our choice of venue.

The location is beautiful. Throughout the wedding people were telling us how nice the venue was. The selection of food was great, from the hors d'oeuvres to the sushi bar. The bar service was good as well. The great part of their package is that they included a suite for the night, and a room for the groom and groomsmen to hang out in, which was a bar, so that was pretty fun for the guys. Now for the bad. When we went to do a walk through at the venue about a week before, there was construction in front of the hotel. It was an eye sore. When we asked whether or not it would be done by the wedding, no one could give us a straight answer. Come the day of the wedding, it was not done yet, there was caution tape all over the front of the hotel. Thank goodness we didn't pay for valet, so our guests did self parking and entered the hotel from the elevator and did not see the front. Next, we had the venue until 3. Around 2:15, people from the next wedding started walking around our wedding, walking through our space, not quite setting up yet, but walking around looking at where they were going to set things up. That was not cool, not cool at all. If not for those two things, our rating would be nearly 5's across the board. At the end of the day though, this place is still a pretty good value for how nice of a venue it is.

We got married on the rooftop garden and had our reception in the large ballroom on august 27. First of all, the venue was absolutely beautiful. I was a little concerned as to how well 150 guests would fit in the garden, but they made it it happen! And the indoor ballroom was stunning and turned out beautiful in pictures. Li-ling Li, our catering and event manager, was an absolute treasure to work with! Very responsive and got everything right with table placements and linens, and she has a wonderfully warm personality. The food was delicious ( steak, lobster, Polynesian salad), and the price point was perfect!!

Li Ling is the catering manager and she was the person helping us manage our wedding at the hotel. She was cordial and accommodating. I'm sure she tried her best getting the most for our value; however, there were flaws on our wedding day that we were not too happy about.

Apparently, we payed for open bar for 5 hours and actually added an extra hour the night of our wedding. Many of our friends and family eventually told us they were cut off very early in the evening. I understand they may have cut people off who appeared intoxicated, but many of our guests were cut off early in the evening without being intoxicated. That is not what we payed for and according to many of our guest, they said the bartender was rude about the cut off.

Second, some of our guests complained about the check in process. There was a mix up with one of our room reservations that we have reserved for family and friends. Story short: we ended up paying for a room that was being unused and that could have been prevented if the front desk people we on top the reservations and who they provided keys for.

Third, signs for our wedding guests to be guided to our wedding spelled my husband's name wrong. After our wedding coordinator asked them to change it, there were still no changes made. Yes, this may seem like I'm being nit-picky, but every little thing adds up.

Fourth, our guest complained about the service being extremely slow during the dinner. We had an Asian eight course meal and our guests were not able to take home the left overs. If we paid our caterers for the meals, why can't the guests take food home? If we had to pay extra for the "to-go" boxes, that option was not present to us. Our guests were in dismay because they couldn't take the left over food home.

The price was lower compared to other venues we looked at and I guess you get what you pay for, but in this case, we felt we expected more and got less.

We had to reach our minimum with the hotel, so the next morning, we hosted a brunch for some of our guests. The brunch cost $1,000, but was not worth the thousand. They served eggs, shrimp cocktails, salmon, potatoes, and a few other dishes. Again....not really, not worth $1,000.

On a positive note, we had our wedding reception at the Japanese Garden that's located on the roof top and it was a beautiful garden and was well maintained. The catering manager, Li-Ling was nice as well. The only reason why I'm giving Kyoto stars is due to Li Ling's efforts. Other than those two things, that is all the positive things I can say. Thank goodness for all of my other vendors being on top of everything.

I cannot begin to express how amazing David Alexson was for our wedding. We had our ceremony out in the garden and our reception in the 1000 Cranes room. He was so friendly and helpful, he really helped put me at ease, especially with my Mom-Zilla. The food was excellent! I was so worried because I have heard people hate wedding food but this was so delicious! People loved it. Dave really helped us nail down a price within our budget. We actually ended up with less people coming so we were able to include things for our guests (like parking). The gardens are beautiful (and they're so romantic at night). The staff was great and very prompt with requests during the reception. (FYI - They did not do our cake. We got it from a bakery we love.)

I had a beautiful wedding at the Kyoto Grand. The only thing prohibiting them from a perfect review is the level of service my guests had received from the service staff. I do not want to go into great detail as I would rather highlight positive aspects of the day.

Dave was wonderful throughout the entire planning process. He was very accommodating and flexible. It was surely a pleasure working with him.

The Kyoto, and its catering department, are nothing if not flexible. What sets them apart is their willingness to make your needs paramount. While other venues can be limiting and their staff a bit snobby, The Kyoto aims to please. I daresay they go above and beyond, bringing to bear a work ethic rarely seen in a place where even struggling artists can afford to be wed. If this place is trying to make a name for itself, it certainly has the right staff to do so.

I'd suggest using the in-house wedding planner that they suggest, it will make your life, and the caterer's, much easier and have things go more smoothly. This isn't to say that you must have a planner, but since the policy here is to afford you as much flexibility as possible, you may find yourself floundering about without someone to hold your dream together beyond the walls of the hotel, where the catering departments responsibilities end. That said, our experience with Dave Alexson (the current head caterer) was so agreeable that I daresay the man could make a good living as a wedding planner if his responsibilities weren't to the hotel's wedding department. This is the type of place that, if you have a sinus infection, you'll also have someone there to walk you to the nearest doctor.

Top marks for this venue, and many thanks to the staff and especially to Mr. Alexson.
