What music genres are in your collection?
70s, 80s, 90s, Classical, Country, Dance, Funk, Gospel, Hip Hop, Jazz, Motown, Oldies, Pop, Punk Rock, R&B, Rock, Soul, World
Do you have liability insurance?
Describe your DJ style:
I have been a professional Entertainer / MC for several years. I have learned over the years that your style needs to flexible. Some parties need a push and a lot of interaction. Some parties need great mixes, with less interaction. I strive to provide an entertainment experience, that matches the needs of the crowd. Too much interaction will come across as cheesy. Not enough can lead to a flat party.
Is there a limit to the amount of music that can be requested?
No limits. I subscribe to a couple of professional music services for DJs. I already pay a subscription price, so there is no limit for main stream music in any genre from around the world. The only exception is if you select some of the small wedding music CD companies that are not main stream music. These often feature poor quality music and average over $30.00 a CD.
What is your usual attire?
I always discuss attire with the client so we are on the same page. My recommendation is the DJ should not look like a waiter, or a cheesy 80's DJ with a bow tie. I am a professional musician and DJ. Selecting simple but entertainment oriented dress code usually works best. Typically I wear black.
If you do not have one of the songs pre-requested by the client, do you require that they provide it?
A client only needs to provide a song if it is not available and I do not already own it. This rarely happens. I do discourage clients from giving me Youtube converted audio files. The quality is very poor compared to an original MP3. I only use legal high quality MP3s, and I own thousands of titles that include the current Billboard Hot 100.
How many other DJs do you work with?
EventsTacoma.com has multiple DJs, but I am the primary DJ. If you select me, I will be your DJ. The only exception would be a major emergency that would require us sending a back-up. This has never happened to date. There are a few DJs in the Northwest that overbook, and mill the work out to anyone that will work cheap. That is not our style. It is important that you work with your DJ leading up to your event so everyone is on the same page. Anything less would not be appropriate.
What is the minimum amount of time you will DJ for?
The time is not the issue, but their is a minimum charge. We will work as short of a time as you request, but we will still need to charge a minimum rate. This is negotiable.
Is the client able to meet the DJ before booking?
We encourage meeting in person at least once if possible. It does not always work out, but it is nice to have a face to face meeting if possible.
Do you specialize in any ethnic or international events?
I have done weddings and events with international themes. Some of these include French, Bollywood, Indonesian, Mexican, Uganda, Jewish and more. I do not profess to be an expert, and I would require an extensive request list. It is also important to spell the songs correctly since they may be titled in a different language than I am familiar with.
Can the client submit a do-not-play list?
A do not play list is part of my planning sheet. This is very important!
Do you bring your own equipment?
We always bring our own gear. It is foolish to assume that the venue has gear that works. They may have a great system, but I could have been damaged the night before and nobody knows about it. We are not opposed to using the venues gear if it is comparable or better than ours. An advantage is a professionally designed system is tuned to the room. We have enough gear the we design the sound with pole mounted and floor speaker combinations to achieve the best sound.
What (if any) special equipment, such as disco balls or lighting, is offered with your service?
We bring modern "sound activated LED lighting. We also bring enough to provide up-lighting if you like. Lights are very important because the help provide energy to the party atmosphere. LED lights are great because the do not get hot. No risk of fire, and the are light weight.
How much time do you usually need to set up? Do you require that the site or client provide a table for you to set up on?
We typically need 1 hour to set up. We bring our own table but prefer you provide one with a table cloth matching the other tables. We bring black table cloths for our tables.
Do you have any extra space requirements?
we can set up almost anywhere.
Do you have a sign or banner that you use at events?
We never post signs or banners. The event is about the client. Banners and signs belong at wedding shows, not receptions.
Do you usually emcee the event or talk between songs?
Even when working with some of my favorite wedding coordinators, I typically emcee the event. Talking between songs needs to be done as needed, and no more.
How would you motivate the crowd if no one is dancing?
Changing the music genre, or throwing in a group line dance is often successful in motivating dancing. Sometimes, I need to get out wit the crowd. This almost always works. I have never had a wedding that did not have people dancing, but I have had several clients that told me their party would probably not dance. People love to dance at weddings, even if they never go out dancing. It is in our blood as humans to dance. It just takes the right combination of music and energy.
What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
Breaks are limited to restroom breaks. My audience rarely even notices that I have stepped away. The music always plays. I do not always eat at weddings, and there is n assumed requirement to provide it. Even when I am invited to grab a plate, I will wait until everyone else has gone through the buffet line, and even then I will eat very little. I an thei to entertain and do not want to be slowed by a heavy meal.
Will you arrange for recorded music to play during your breaks?
Always. Once I start, there is never any "dead air" time.
What is your backup plan in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?
I work with other DJs, and we always have a backup plan in place. To date, this has never happened.
Do you book yourself for more than one event in a day?
rarely! I did receive a call from a club while I was at a reception, and I was able to take their gig because it started well after the reception would end. Other than that, a double booking is next to impossible in the wedding world. Timelines change to often to predict.
What is your overtime rate?
Most of my packages are " All Inclusive". Often if an event runs extremely long, I will leave it to the client to tip for the extra work, but I rarely invoice it. We do offer some value packages with time limits. Overtime for these events is $75.00 per hour.
Do you charge for travel expenses? If yes, how much do you charge?
Travel within 50 miles of SeaTac Airport is included. Travel beyond this area is charged "one way" at $1.00 per mile after the first 50 miles. (example - a wedding that was 80 miles from SeaTac airport would be charged as an additional $30.00)
What is the required deposit to secure your services?
A $100.00 deposit is required to secure your date on my calendar. The balance is due no later than when I arrive to set up for your event. Clients often pay the balance the week prior, because they do not want to conduct business the day of the event. I do take cash, checks and credit cards.

This has to be the best DJ I have ever worked with! Worth every dollar! He rocked it, rapped it and country and even blues it!

They were great. Curtis was a lifesaver when my original dj canceled on me 3 weeks before my wedding. Anthony was so polite and very respectful. He did great with the music selection and when we wanted to add stuff he was on it with no hassle. I would have been lost without them

Curt was a great match for our wedding. He plays different instruments so has a very innate sense of good music and timing, he was flexible and wiling to move or do as much as we asked of him. I definitely would rate him higher if I could. Thanks Curt!

Curt did a FANTASTIC job as our wedding DJ last September. He was very accommodating via email and told us exactly what we needed to provide him with. We worked on an extensive music playlist and sent it off to him about a week before the wedding and he had it completely under control! We did not have time to run through the ceremony beforehand with him but it went very smoothly. He was a fun, interactive DJ who helped announce important parts of the evening (i.e. cake, first dance, when the photo booth was shutting down, exit, etc.) and he took requests from the bridal party. For the cost and service, Curt cannot be beat.

We were leaning towards not having a DJ and just having an iPod set up with someone in control of the music, but I'm really glad we went with Curt instead. This way we didn't have to stick a friend or relative at that station the whole night and we didn't have to worry about someone else making announcements.

Thank you so much for being such a huge part of our special day we really appreciate it!

Having not had personal experience in preparing music for an event, I was nervous about the responsibility for "getting it right" and providing a fun and fitting atmosphere for our wedding. I fretted about finding a good blend for the age of the audience; whether the music I would choose would resonate with the crowd in a way that inspires a joyful and active dynamic.

So we hired Curt Hoagland, and constrained ourselves to choosing only the handful of songs for the actual ceremony. Curt demonstrated obvious expertise in smoothly delivering those on cue, and then managing the music for the remainder of the event using his own sensibilities. I could not have been any more pleased with the result.

First, he is the consummate professional there to provide a good experience for the client, not using the opportunity to draw attention to himself. He is well-mannered, visible but unobtrusive, pleasant to the guests, and looks the part. He politely engages in conversation if someone approaches with a request, but (thankfully) exercises his own judgment whether that track fits the circumstances.

In our initial interview, Curt told us he has a knack for 'feeling' what a crowd wants and needs, and constructs the blend accordingly. This turned out to be an understatement. By the time we wrapped it up, there was a genuine sense of having done it justice! In the months since our wedding, we have been told by dozens of people that it was perhaps the most fun wedding they have ever attended. The choice of venue and our collection of friends and family were certainly contributing factors, but Curt made the place vibrant.

Recommend Curt for a wedding? Absolutely, without hesitation.

He was very helpful and made the process of creating a playlist incredibly easy. There were a few times that I had a hard time getting a hold of him but he always got back to me within 72 hours.

He made the wedding even better! He was alert to what was getting our family & friends up & dancing. Transitions were smooth between songs, the party never stopped. Very reasonably priced, was on time, and awesome to work with. Meet with us ahead of time to get song lists & gave us great suggestions. If you want a DJ who knows his stuff, & is very reliable I highly recommend using him.

He was on time, extremely helpful, played great music, and kept the party going. We gave him our itinerary and he did a great job announcing what was next and helped keep us on schedule. He knew what music to play to get the party started. I had many guests comment on how good the Dj was. Great value, he had all the equipment, lighting, and microphones needed. I would use him again. You will be extremely pleased if you book this Dj! I highly recommend him!
