Heather and Bruce were very responsive and flexible from the first time we visited the winery. We chose First Colony because my daughter wanted a bbq 4th of July 'party' style wedding -- not a ballroom type affair. First Colony was rustic enough to satisfy that description, but had the capacity to seat 150 guests in air conditioning if the weather didn't permit us to have outdoor seating. It did in fact pour down rain during dinner and we were comfortable with our 145 guests upstairs. The DJ was set up downstairs in the tasting room and that's where the dancing took place. Some of the features of First Colony that appealed to us: the price; tables and chairs didn't have to be rented; we could bring in our own alcohol for the caterer to serve; there is a large walk in refrigerator to store flowers and food before reception; the very kind owners. Some of the negatives: with a group as large as ours we weren't able to accommodate dancing and eating in one area inside; the food servers had to replenish the upstairs buffet via the main stairway that the guest were using; the outdoor lighting wasn't sufficient without additional lights brought in; the air conditioner did not cool sufficiently. Overall we were very pleased with First Colony and felt we made a good choice based on what our daughter wanted.

First Colony Winery responded with the following comments:

Thank you for choosing First Colony for your daughter's wedding. Your family made it so easy for us to work with you and you were as flexible as we were! The American flag was so beautiful and such a hit on the 4th of July. Last week we installed a third air conditioning unit in the Loft to help cool the space when 100+ people are using it. We are really looking forward to seeing some of the photos from the wedding. Please visit the next time you are in town!

First Colony staff & owners were very friendly and helpful throughout the wedding planning process. The winery was under new management after signing our wedding contract with FCW. The new owners were great about accommodating the original contract signed, and were flexible with setup times, catering, photography, etc. We were able to visit FCW as many times as necessary prior to event, and the owner was available to meet at FCW several times for questions. FCW was also very prompt in responding to e-mails with wedding question specifics. On the wedding day, there was the "perfect storm"! Things did not go quite as planned, but FCW staff went above and beyond to keep things running as smoothly as possible. The evening ended up not being quite ideal, which was partially out of the hands of FCW, however, they were responsive in providing understanding and compensation for the mishaps. FCW has been very helpful and flexible and overall great to work with! I would recommend FCW winery to others! Evening was romantic, and the guests loved the wine! We will be back to visit very soon!

This is a beautiful ceremony & reception site, but I was unhappy with the service & lack of professionalism I received. They have a newly renovated bridal suite that is lovely & their wine is fantastic, but they really have no idea what they're doing when it comes to weddings.

When I booked First Colony Winery as my venue, I was assisted by their wedding & event coordinator. However, between the time I had booked & my wedding date, she abruptly quit & they had no replacement for her. It seems that my paperwork had all gotten lost after she quit as well.
About a month before my wedding I sent an email to her account to ask some questions about setting up for the reception the day before. I received a reply back from one of the owners informing me that she had quit. She also told me that I needed to select my cases of wine for the event (you have to use theirs) and she said she *thought* the rest of my deposit was due soon.
I had already bought my wine & they were supposed to be holding it for me! They eventually found it, but it was so much undue stress! That, plus they didn't know when my deposit was due & started asking for it early, which also was stressful.

My only other gripe about my experience here happened on my wedding day The bridal chamber has windows that overlook the barrel room of the winery. It's cool to see, but there are no curtains and while I was in the bridal suite getting ready, there were employees climbing up on top of the barrels and LOOKING INTO THE BRIDAL SUITE. It was really creepy. One of them was the winemaker there, who is already kind of creepy in the first place.

I will say that, on a positive note, they are very flexible about when you can setup/tear down for the reception. They also let me wander around the winery to plan & measure for decorations on any given day I went down there. The price is reasonable, just don't expect ANY help from the winery. They literally only provide you the venue, tables, & chairs.

My husband and I were married a month ago at First Colony Winery. Overall, the experience was amazing and we do not have any regrets. The price was beyond reasonable, and throughout our engagement Martha (the general manager) went above and beyond to make us happy, and was always very quick with her responses to my many many emails. They were very trusting and flexible, and really let us sort of take over the space and make it our own for the wedding, which was very nice. My only complaints were that the chairs and tables were upstairs when my decorating committee arrived as we had expected, and the tasting room was not closed and ready for us to prepare for cocktail hour by the time that we had discussed with Martha. So only a few miscommunications, but really everything was beautiful and we would happily recommend First Colony to anyone we know! Also, they are under new ownership and there have been rumors of a new fancy event space coming soon---though the space they have now is very rustic and pretty!
