Having just held our wedding ceremony and reception at Bistro Ten18, we hope to spread the word that this is the place to hold events in New York City. We were lucky to work with Jon Skiptunis, who proved to be a capable, knowledgeable event planner, assisted by Nancy who served as the day-of coordinator. Jon and Nancy were always patient with us, noting every concern we had and working diligently to put together the perfect night just as we envisioned. Jon's recommendations were spot-on and his ideas greatly enriched the evening. We appreciated the flexibility demonstrated Jon and the rest of the Bistro Ten18 staff, which allowed us to customize everything from the placement of furniture to the exact presentation of food and the ceremony. They were extremely accommodating and gracious every step of the way. The restaurant allowed us to store some needed items both before and after the big day, and made preparations for deliveries that were to show up many hours early before the event.

The venue itself was also ideal. We had a little over 40 guests and each one raved about what a great night it was. All we wanted was to see everyone stuffed, possibly drunk, and smiling - and we got our wish! The food was absolutely delicious and loved by all of our guests. We were in awe of the amount of high-quality food we got for the money. In addition, the wait and bar staff were excellent. Everyone was so nice and helpful, never missing a beat as the party went strong for a good 7 hours. By the end we felt like we had made new friends with everyone who worked that night with us, and can’t wait until we have an excuse to throw another party there! In all, we cannot recommend a better, more high-quality, yet reasonably priced venue than Bistro Ten18.

We visit so many catering companies that charged ridiculous rates per guest for the wedding. Prior to Bistro Ten 18, I made an appointment with Thyme Events that was recommended by QGB. At the end of the meeting, I was really disappointed that they were not flexible with the pricing nor professional. Throughout the meeting, the owner, Nancy was more worried about her staff answering the phones than with discussing our needs for the wedding. She demand our budget and told us right away that she works with a minimal budget of 40K. This is due to the work and quality that her catering company puts into weddings, they have to work with a minimal budget. I went back on my search and came across Flavor by Bistro Ten 18 listed on a catering site. I made an appointment with the owner, Craig Skiptunis and we set up a meeting. For the price we paid, not only did it include a seated dinner with pastries & sweets but it included a cocktail hour with passed hors d' oeuvres. I was blown away by the rate per guest. Our proposal listed passed lobsters, grilled jerk chicken, filet Mignon Crostini, tuna tartar, stationary buffets of cheese and breads and veggies with dips for the cocktail hour. For the seated dinner, the chef designed an entree for us called summer mixed grill entree. It included grilled shrimp on sugarcane skewers, filet mignon with mango salsa, Kohlrabi Slaw, smoked purple potato salad and grilled asparagus. The first course was the chilled tomato soup and the second course was a heirloom salad. For the dessert, miniature sweets and pastries. We also prepared entrees for children, vegetarians, and work staff. When we had our first tasting, I was blown away by the presentation and quality of the food. We were so stuffed, we couldn't walk out of there. I gave Craig my time line for some of the activities we planned for our wedding. He made some notes and gave us the quotes for rentals and recommendation for a florist since it was an outdoor wedding. I had a couple of revisions made before we could actually settle down with the rentals quote and rates of the waitstaff, etc. It took awhile since we had negotiate and cut back some items. In the end, it was still priced a lot more than we expected.
On the day of the wedding, I noticed the small portions and the quantity of the food. A lot of our families and guests were left hungry since there were only 5 trays of each hors d' oeuvres passed around! Only the stationary buffets with cheese and breads and veggies got refilled. I asked one of the waitstaff to prepare a tray for myself and my husband due to our photo session. I was told, the trays were passed around and they would be right back with a drink for us. Not only were the trays not passed but we didn't even get a drink. I was mortified to find the waitstaff collecting the plates and drinks while our family and guests were eating! They were more conscious at collecting the plates than they were at serving the food and drinks. The reception hour got worse. Plates were continuously collected after only less than 20 minutes into our dinner. We had to tell our server twice that we need another 15 minutes to eat since we had many activities planned for the reception.The only positive feedback was our server was tentative with refilling our drinks and serving us extra bread or food. I was really disappointed with the waitstaff performance since they collected everything and cleaned up when there was remaining 30 mins to the reception hour.When I email Craig to let him know what had happened, he acknowledged he would bring it up at their company meetings. However, we didn't get any incentives or apologies on behalf of Bistro Ten 18.
When I got the final invoice for the catering, I was astounded by the waitstaff's rates. It was charging half of the receptions rate. I was beyond belief when I was told they went into overtime when their staff left even before I did at the reception. In addition, a lot more rentals were added than necessary to our final bill. We specifically told Craig our guest count was 70 and we would not need extra rentals. We had extra waitstaff who could had assist us with our needs during the cocktail hour but they were nowhere to be found until the reception hour. We had extra food since a few guests could not make it. The plates were taken and discarded. Our wedding cake was discarded without informing us. After our cake cutting, our cake disappeared and we never saw it again. I didn't get to save the top layer of the cake for our anniversary! Craig later informed us that his assistant manager told him she didn't feel there was much cake left and they did not have any containers to store it. For the record, we had our cake box when the cake was delivered and we also brought cake boxes for guests. None of the waitstaff nor the assistant manager bothered to let us know. They quoted more liquor than was actually opened. We had about 10 minors & children who couldn't drink, they rounded each table with 4 bottles of wine in addition to cocktails and beer which would be enough to get liquor poisoning. We were charged for extra linens since two tables fail to arrive due to a delivery problem. The rental company gave us 10% off but charged us an arm and leg for the delivery. Altogether, the reception came out the same as Thyme Events' quote so we didn't save much. It is only worth the price if you get your own waitstaff and rentals. The food itself was worth the price! However, you have to follow up with the quantity and make sure it is enough to feed your guest count. The portions were a lot smaller than served at our tasting. Overall, I felt the organization and waitstaff could had done a lot more in terms of servicing the guest needs particularly the bride & groom. The assistant manager failed to organize and direct her waitstaff while maintaining our time time line as well as informing us before making the actual decisions about the cake and extra food. Overall, I was not impressed with the delivery and performance on the actual day of the wedding. It could have been a lot better for the money we spend for the entire catering.
