The Hale Koa Hotel ended up being the perfect choice for our wedding reception! All of the food was delicious and it was a great value! We went with the served dinner of Chicken and Mahi mahi. It came with a salad and dessert of our choice. Our guests were raving about the apple pie tart with ice cream, it was enormous! We also ordered sushi, edamame, and poke for our appetizers. Everything was delicious, but the poke was the definitely the favorite! We worked with Casey and she was very responsive and professional. She always emailed us back quickly and was happy to answer our many questions on the phone. We would love to have another event at the Hale Koa in the future!

We recently got had our ceremony and reception at Hale Koa! Charline (from the catering department) was AAAAAAMAZING to work with!! She was so easy to get in contact with and made every.single.detail of my wedding PERFECT!!! She listened to my ideas and helped me to arrange the ballroom in a way that made the most sense. I swear I must've made a hundred changes to the guest count/menu selection/table numbers -- but she always greeted me with a smile and warm cheerfulness! On some of the stressful days -- when the "Big Day" was drawing near -- she always remained so pleasant and put all my concerns at ease! My guests were comfortable in the DeRussy Ballroom and also commented at how wonderful the wait staff was. On the day of -- the banquet captain catered to my and (my now) husband -- making sure we always had something to drink and that our food was served to perfection! Thank you Charline and Hale Koa Banquet Staff for helping make our dreams come true!!

We picked Hale Koa as our venue for our ceremony and reception for its affordability and location. Our ceremony was held in the Maile Garden and our reception was in the Banyan Tree Showroom. To be honest the Banyan Tree Showroom was our second choice (in terms of the rooms they offered), but it turned out better than we imagined! It has been smooth sailing working with Hale Koa via Michele. She was courteous, polite, and knowledgeable. She always answered all of our questions, and was easy to contact.
Ceremony: The garden was beautiful and luckily, it did not rain! Our guests didn’t wither in the sun and enjoyed the outdoors. Not to mention, Hale Koa provided water service for our guests! After the ceremony, one of the staff members was attentive and offered us water, and made sure we didn't get thirsty the whole time we were there to take pictures in the muggy weather.
Reception: The staff was great during our reception! We decided to have waiter service for our head table. They brought each of us full plates of the following: salad, main entrée, and desserts. They put a good portion of each food that was available in our buffet! We picked Aloha buffet with the prime rib. It was scrumptious and our guests raved at how delicious the food was. We also ordered our wedding cake here. We actually ordered a side sheet cake because we thought there might not be enough cake for everyone. Boy, were we wrong! We took home 6 big boxes of cake! A tip would be order less cake than what you need. We actually did that, but somehow, we still had leftovers.
The biggest gripe we have is that we later found out that Hale Koa added 5 extra people in our count. In actuality, our original count should have stayed the same since a few people did not show or stay long enough to eat. So check your count before paying them! Or it can leave a sour taste in your mouth when you discover this discrepancy a month after the wedding.

The Hale Koa is an excellent place to have a wedding reception. The banquet coordinator made sure that everything was perfect. The food was excellent and was very reasonable in price. I don't think we could have found a better meal for a better price at another hotel in Waikiki. Everyone we worked with was very responsive and worked to make sure we got everything we needed.

luau garden for 290 people. Positive feed back: food was dry good. Alcohol: good value & costs to beaten around town. No 4.7% tax since it's military hotel & that is a great
savings. With over 275 guest ,hotel gave complimentary ocean front room to
bride/groom. Guest parking with validation was only $5. So the value was really good.Negative: catering staff wasunacceptable. Beverly Ting is snarky & acted with bad attitude like she was doing us a favor by talking to .We switched to Dora with improvement... But she was on vacation for our
wedding & we felt tossed around. It was a very
unprofessional experience . catering dept
needs an overhaul. servic e staff was understaffed and grouchy. There were not
enough bar tenders so our guest had to wait in
long long lines to be served. no one at the Halekoa knew how to work the hale koa
protector to our lap top. the audio system
malfunctioned in the middle of a family
member's dance. The speakers were poorly
wired so folks in middle of luau garden
could not understand speaker projection.
At end of night around 9pm we needed bell
service to carry gifts to the room.all the bell
service had been released to go home. A
busser was asked to help take the gifts on
busser carts to the room , &he was rude & said he did not know where the room towers
were... Nor did he know the names of the two
towers. He gave the attitude that we were
inconveniencing him. There were other flaws in the evening that made the wedding experience unremarkable, including hotel reception clerks. So if food was not so good for the value, I'd say go somewhere else. If you are on a budget ( like most couples)... Use hale Koa with very , very low expectations &you will be fine.

I love Hale Koa! My wedding is the Luau gardens were amazing! Casey, my event planner was so on it! It is the only venue that will allow you to have a fire dancer! I had mines on stage! The only negative I experienced was being priced over the head count. I had 20 people that did not show up but they charged me for extra people! I was sad about this but its ok the crab legs and aloha buffett was priced great.

Our reception was in the Kalia I & II rooms. It was a good size room for a smaller wedding. The planning went fairly well but I ended up finding out that the person handling our event was out on vacation the week of our wedding (when we had to have our seating arrangements and headcount in.)

They don't do tastings so everything you order will be based off of the menu descriptions. Thankfully I've been to other events at Hale Koa to know that the food there is pretty good so I wasn't too worried.

During our cocktail hour, we had the crab cakes, kalua pork quesadillas, and spicy ahi poke. People really seemed to like it and I heard a few family members really went to town eating it...

Since we didn't meet the buffet minimum headcount (which is 100), we had a served dinner. We did the spinach salad, braised short ribs in red wine sauce on mushroom risotto, and tiramisu cake (in addition to our wedding cake.)

Ok, let me say when the short ribs came out we (and everyone else) were shocked! Normally when you get braised short ribs at a nice restaurant you'll get these cute cubes. Not these! It came out like a HUGE brontosaurus bone with the meat all around it, sitting on the risotto. Everyone was talking about how it was like something from The Flinestones, but it was really soft, tender, and tasty. And I think that was the best risotto I've had in my life.

Also, validated parking was like, $5 for 8 hours (great since it's on the edge of Waikiki in case folks want to go walking around afterwards.)

We had our reception on a Friday night (hoping to get to see the fireworks from the Hilton next door), and as we were winding down around 7:50P we asked the staff if they went off (it usually goes off around then) they told us yes- I was kinda bummed since I wanted my guests to get to see the fireworks. After the wedding I heard from my sisters, cousin, and one of my uncles that when they left around 8:15P they saw the fireworks going off...!

Long story short, the food was awesome. The guests LOVED the food (and the cake- see review on Aloha Cakery.) Lots of parking and the hubby loved the fact that it wasn't as harsh on the wallet as some other places would've been.

Hale koa hotel was an amazing venue to host my wedding reception. The coordinator was very professional and detailed of everything that they could do and detailed what will be happening. However, one flaw I believed hale koa should improve on is being more flexible on appointments. They probably are such a popular venue but it took a month to book one appointment. Other than that our wedding was amazing and fun! Great place to have a reception.

Our experience with the Hale Koa started out bumpy. Our first catering manager wasn't very attentive & took weeks to respond to my emails and when she finally did she wouldn't cover all of my questions. The impression she gave us when we had our first appointment to view the grounds was like it was just another event for her, nothing special, but ultimately we still decided to book the Hale Koa because the price was right.

We were lucky enough to get a recommendation from a friend for a great catering manager, so we did swich later on which turned out to be great. If you decide to go with the Hale Koa, I highly recommend Beverly Ting, she is a fantastic catering manager! She's friendly, professional, and answers your questions promptly.

We had our ceremony at the Maile Gardens, which is spacious and has beautiful greenery. There is a staff member that will handle the music & will work with your catering manager to help guide you when/where to walk. Our reception was held in the Banyan Tree Showroom. The groom & I weren't able to taste much of the food because we were so busy but our guests say it was great. We also had a wedding cake made by the hotel and that turned out nicely as well.

I would say the only downfalls to the Hale Koa are that they aren't able to change the layout of the tables in the reception rooms, so if you have your heart set on round tables and they have squares, sorry! They also won't allow you to hang anything on the walls or ceilings of the rooms. The parking structure is also across the street but there is a parking shuttle so it's not too bad. All in all I think the Hale Koa has a lot to offer and the prices are great compared to other venues. We had a perfect wedding day & we owe a lot of that to Beverly & the reception staff!

Working with Bev at the Hale Koa was fabulous. She always answered all of my questions in a prompt manner, and she provided me with a great deal of advice and information to ensure that our wedding day was amazing. My only concern was that they were pretty strict on having things set up a specific way. They tried their best to work with my wishes, but sometimes, I felt that I had to compromise a bit too much for the money that we were spending - for instance, only allowing two hours for set up, no tasting, etc.

Planning a wedding to begin with is a very hard and stressful task. Knowing this, you would expect the people with which you are expending a lot of your money to help make the planning process a little more care free. We decided to settle on the Hale Koa because we had heard that the food was pretty good and, lets face it, that was our number one priority. We had been to too many weddings that had completely bombed on the dinner menu. So after hearing such high marks we thought it would be worth the cost. I also attended the Wedding workshop for hotels/venues at the wedding cafe and Hale Koa made themselves out to be such nice and flexible people that in the beginning stages of planning i thought my choice to go with the Hale Koa was an automatic one, and one that i would certainly not regret!

Sadly, I was wrong! The service was sloppy, the banquet mangers were inflexible and treated us as if we were "just another wedding" that they wanted to get out of the way and collect all that they could in the process. It was pretty sad. We went in so excited to talk about the details of our special day and all we kept getting back from them was "no" after "no" after "no". It was pathetic to say the least. The only time I really received a call from the hotel was never a courtesy call to find out how plans were going and how they could be of assistance, it was merely to collect their payment. They did nothing to make us feel special or feel as though our big day was just as important to them as it was to us. After all, we're dishing out a lot of money to this place to let it just simply go unnoticed. My family did most of the set up on the day of the wedding and the Hale Koa staff - namely Bev (the banquet manager) and Gina (the Banquet coordinator) - did nothing to support us in our efforts, it seemed as though all they were interested in was to find out how much they could possibly squeeze out of us. So thankful to say, our day turned out to be a success, but sadly that was no thanks at all to the staff of the Hale Koa.

So if you're looking for a place to plan your wedding where your special day is just another dollar in the pocket of a greedy establishment and the staff treat you like you're too dumb to know whats best for you, than Hale Koa is your place! If not, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere. Although other venues may seem more steep if you're on a tight budget, I'd definitely warn you to shop around very carefully before settling for a place who treats your wedding day as just another way to make money. I know I have told everyone I possibly could to steer clear of the Hale Koa and I plan to do so for a long time! I feel it disrespectful for them to treat people with such utter disregard. Believe me when I say the list of what they did could go on and on but I am choosing to stop here. I'd be happy to answer any questions that any of you may have if you desire to know more.

By the way if after this warning you still decide to settle with the Hale Koa, make sure that when you give them the final count you undershoot the number by about 10% of your actual count. The reason for this is because even if you gauge your actual number, and less than that number shows up, you will still be overcharged for the number that you gave them. Just a tip.

Just a tip. Read less

Planning a destination wedding for 200 guests is a daunting endeavor and Michelle at Hale Koa helped us to plan a wonderful day! The Maile Garden was an ideal location for the ceremony (though there is only seating for 100 people, max) and our reception in the Banyon Tree Showroom was beautiful.

We got SO many compliments on the food (Royal Hawaiian Feast) even from the locals who are used to Hawaiian food. The mainland and foreign guests especially loved the exotic food and different tastes, and the table decorations that are included in the menu were beautiful.

Michelle was especially wonderful in helping me to plan our wedding day, nearly to the minute, and gave a lot of helpful advice in areas where I really didn't know what decision to make.

My mother-in-law had coworkers (from Hawaii) talking about the wedding for days, and many people said it was the most beautiful wedding they'd ever attended. All that at a very affordable price, thank you Hale Koa and Michelle!

It would have been nice to have special rooms for the bride and groom to rest in/get ready before/after the ceremony, but we had a few rooms reserved for ourselves so just used those.

From day one, all our planning went well with Hale Koa. We were blessed to have a wonderful sponsor and also a wonderful consultant at the Hale Koa hotel to help us with every step of our wedding reception planning. Michelle Aikona was so helpful each time I emailed, or called with a question and was always willing to meet with us if we wanted to see the ballroom we had decided on again. :0) I am very satisfied with their service, and don't get me started on the foood!

My husband had mentioned that their food was amazing! But when I finally got to taste it, I realized that I didn't have enough stomach to taste every single thing on their buffet. The one thing we were worried about was the amount of food available for our vegetarian guests but it worked out well and had many comments from guests that the food was plentiful and great!

So happy we decided to do our wedding reception at the Hale Koa. :0)

If you are military, or have a relative to sponsor you, definitely consider having your wedding here. Not only is the venue beautiful, it is one of the most cost friendly venues you can get. If I had a wedding like the one I had there back on the mainland, it would have cost three times the amount. What we paid for at this venue was a fraction of what other friends of mine have paid here on the mainland. The catering office people are also very nice and accomodating. They also want to make sure that your day is perfect.

The only issue I had, was with the staff moving the plates and dishes a little too quickly. This is what my mom had told me. I guess they took things off her table too fast? They also gave me the wrong flavor of cake, but at least the catering office called me a week following the wedding to let me know that they had heard about it and would try and do something about it. Now, this would never happen on the mainland. They would probably brush things off, and tell me too bad. Well, I guess it's the aloha spirit present in everyone in Hawaii. Besides these little things, you will not be disappointed if you choose this place for your wedding. It's a beautiful hotel with a lush garden and nice rooms. The staff is friendly and will work with you to get everything perfect for your wedding day.

The food was phenomenal at the Hale Koa! Everyone loved the variety and the unusual and delicious options. We have no complaints at all about the catering It was great! We loved the set up, the size, the food, the staff, everything!! It wasn’t fussy or too uptight, and everyone seemed comfortable and seemed to be having a fabulous time. Beverly Ting, the coordinator there, was incredibly helpful, funny, sweet, and welcoming. She mad all my fears and worries seem to slip away as she seemed to have everything under control. I’m assuming she did, too, because everything came out perfectly. The room was set up just like we had asked, and she even made sure my father got the specific cake he asked for. The Hale Koa was wonderful to work with. We were very happy with them.

We had a great time at the Hale Koa for our wedding. The food was delicious and the people were helpful and professional the day of the event. During the wedding planning stages it was often difficult to get a hold of someone via the phone, but as the day drew nearer they were much more responsive via email.

This is the upside of having the wedding at the Hale Koa hotel. You can't beat the price, starting at 30$ a head, and the food was absolutely delicious. We got a lot of compliments on the food! The service at the reception was GREAT! They made my husband and I feel like a king and queen. And were very accomodating to all the guest. The ceremony grounds were pretty, but the grass could be taken care of better. Also the room we had the reception in was pretty, although it needs to be updated. Now the downside, you need to be military to have your wedding there, or have someone sponser you, which was not a big deal. But the actual service you receive when planning your wedding there was horrible. A friend of mine, whose husband is in the military decided not to have her wedding there for exactly that reason. We went through with it, but they act as if you are bothering them when you are in the planning stages. I was a very easy going bride, but if I would call and ask them a question, they would not get back to me. So my mom would call, etc. And sitting down and discussing the wedding, i had to be sure I had everything straight myself, because they were no help. So overall if you can stand dealing with people who are really no help, have your wedding there. We had a beautiful and most important fun wedding and all that matters is that one day/night.
