Hendry House is an absolutely beautiful location for a wedding (or any event). It is a hidden gem in Arlington County. I lived 5 minutes from it for most of my life and never knew it was there. I am very happy we had our wedding there and everything turned out beautifully, however the property manager, Sharon, was not always the easiest to work with. She repeatedly told us that the way we wanted to set up the chairs for our ceremony wasn't possible simply because she had never seen it done, and whenever asked by my husband, me, or our planner about something eventually responded that we couldn't do whatever it was. However, every time my mother asked her anything she was incredibly accommodating. All in all, it was a perfect choice for our wedding despited the difficulties we had with Sharon.

We looked at venues outside of the immediate DC area because we wanted the green space, but when we visited the Hendry House, we were surprised to find a venue so close to the central metro area. We had about 100 guests under a tent and the weather was perfect. The inside space worked perfectly for our cocktail hour and would be great for a smaller wedding. The staff did a great job with making sure the grounds were well manicured. We highly recommend this venue if you are looking for a beautiful outdoor venue close in to the city.

Searching for a venue in the Northern Virginia area can be a daunting task. There are so many beautiful vineyards, manors, hotels etc., we weren't sure where to start. We knew that we wanted something affordable, centrally located and intimate. We came across The Hendry House by sheer luck and I am so glad we did! It was the first venue we visited and we knew when we left that walk through that this was it. Here is a short list of the pros:
- Great location! Out of town guests can fly directly into Reagan or Dulles Airport and not have far to go to arrive at the venue.
- The Hilton Garden Inn allows for a complimentary shuttle for wedding guests, just be sure to arrange for the shuttle several months in advance.
- Venue has a full sized kitchen (huge plus for caterers- some cost savings since they don't need to bring an additional tent to prep the food in).
- Venue has good sized bridal and grooms suites.
- Sharon (site coordinator) is incredibly responsive which is hugely appreciated when planning your wedding!
- You can work w. any vendor of your preference (w. the exception of tent vendors, Hendry House will provide you a short list of who you can work with)..caterers, florists, photographers which is great bc it allows you to control some of the costs.
- Lastly, the venue is affordable but didn't leave me feeling like I'd compromised on anything. The property is just beautiful.

Cons include:
- Site can hold up to 150 max. Not necessarily a bad thing but something to consider before visiting the venue.
- Reception must end by 930 due to noise ordinance laws. We made it work by beginning our ceremony at 3pm and hiring a shuttle bus to take guests to the Skydome Lounge at the Double Tree Hotel nearby for the after party.
- Sparklers, rice and items of the like are not allowed to be used on property.

If you're looking for a beautiful, conveniently located venue in the NOVA area, The Hendry House is where you want to have your wedding!

We are so happy that our wedding took place at The Hendry House, a quiet beautiful spot in the middle of a park with great photo shots for a wedding! Our wedding size fit perfectly in front of the home and the venue is perfect for a wedding with less than 70 guests. We barely fit in the home, however, the manager on site, Heather, was flexible and worked well with our caterer and planner to get us all in. The Hendry House was the most affordable venue in the area in our opinion, despite still being a little pricey, but that's what you get when living here! The contract with the venue has a long list of things we could not use or do such as using flower petals or sparklers, however, we understood that it is a historical site and the grounds are very well kept. We definitely recommend this venue, it's worth looking through!

All of our wedding guests loved our venue. They all referred it as a hidden gem as a lot of them never been to this beautiful park until our wedding day!

On top of the beautiful setting, the staff at The Hendry House, esp Sharon was just so pleasant to work with. Sharon is super responsive and professional. I do wish that they had more flexibility with their list of vendors.

Thank you again!

We had our wedding and reception at the Hendry House and it was beautiful. The house could be used however you needed and it provides a kitchen for the caterer to use. There are a lot of different options you can do with the ceremony and reception depending on the size of the wedding. We had 140 guests so we got married by the trellis and then had the reception under a tent. Sharon at the Hendry House was quick with her responses to any questions that I had. I would recommend this to anyone that wants a beautiful wedding with a intimate, rustic setting.

Hendry House is a great, natural setting to have a wedding. The house is well maintained and has a full catering kitchen. There's plenty of space on the front lawn to have a tent for around 90 people, like we had. There's also a great arbor on the property that makes for a nice ceremony background. I would recommend Hendry House for small weddings (less than 100 guests), or those who want an outdoor wedding on a small budget and don't want to travel way outside the Beltway.

We had a beautiful wedding at Hendry House and enjoyed how convenient it was to Clarendon, Courthouse, and DC in general. Sharon is a pleasure to work with in setting your date and signing the contract. Only things to note are that you can only use one tent company (but they're good) and you can't throw petals or have bubbles or sparklers. Other than that, Hendry House is great!!

Also, the Hilton Garden Inn in Courthouse offers free shuttle service for hotel guests to Hendry House! Best deal ever!

We chose Hendry House because it was a beautiful, laid-back location in the D.C. area that allowed us to have 100+ guests in a relaxed, non-hotel setting. The price is very reasonable (although adding in tents, lighting, etc. adds to the cost) and the setting was perfect, especially in the fall with the leaves changing color. The grounds are exquisite and our guests all commented on what a perfect setting it was for an outdoor ceremony (under a special vine-covered arch) and tented evening reception. The house is too small to host more than 50 people max, but provides a great backdrop for photographs, etc. The only problem is that because it is owned by Arlington County and is located in a neighborhood, there are some inflexible rules, such as you have to use a preferred tent company and the reception had to be over by 9:30 and all guests gone by 10 PM, which did feel a little on the short side. I would definitely recommend Hendry House to couples looking for a unique, classy, casual vibe.

It was love at first site with Hendry House. We visited about a dozen venues before stumbling on the Hendry House. Everywhere within our budget was too small, too dingy, too far ... always requiring some major compromise.

When we showed up at Hendry House, we immediately knew that this was where we wanted to have our wedding. The gardens are beautiful, the house is charming and Sharon was super helpful. It was almost perfect! Just be aware of the early closing time (the music stops at 9:30pm) and that there will be airplanes flying overhead in the middle of your ceremony.

I've done my research and there is nowhere so close to DC for this price where you can have a secluded, outdoor wedding in such a charming setting.

The Hendry House was really beautiful for our wedding, and I absolutely loved it! We did the ceremony outdoors and had the reception both indoors and outdoors under a tent, which they put on the patio area in front of the house. The inside isn't huge, but all the rooms make it so there's a lot of flow, and people don't get bored. If there's kids at your wedding, there is tons of room for them to run around. Sharon always responded really quickly to any questions I had and always tried to be as helpful as possible. The only problem I had was that the place has really strict rules for certain things, and I wasn't told about all of them beforehand. For example, since I had over 85 people I had to have a tent, but I thought I could just have a small one to cover the extra people I had, but it turned out I had to have one big enough to cover everybody, which is much more expensive. It's also very difficult to get any other caterers or rental companies than what Hendry House prefers. We ended up using one of their preferred caterers, but ordered the actual food from somewhere else. Despite this issue, however, it turned out great anyway and I definitely would have done it again!

We had our wedding reception at the Hendry House in May and could not be happier with the location. Interior of the house has been completely re-furbished and is now temperature controlled (important for DC weddings!) and fully wheelchair accessible. The grounds are large, green and gorgeous and the wrap around porch and front patio provided the perfect mix of indoors & outdoors we were hoping for.

Drawbacks: 1) HH is in the flight path to Reagan Airport, if we had had the ceremony outdoors here all the noise from the planes might have been akward. 2) HH is located in a lovely part in the middle of a neighborhood and rental times available end on the early side of the evening. 3) If you need a tent (in the end, thank goodness, we did not) HH contracts with only one tent company (LA tents) and they were not pleasant to work with or responsive.

We held a small wedding at the Hendry House on a beautiful fall day. The ceremony was outside on the brick patio and the cocktail/buffet reception was inside/outside. We had approximately 50 people and had initially planned to rent a tent; I am glad that we did not because the setting was so beautiful, it would have been hard to appreciate! Everyone commented on how beautiful the house and the park were.

We were challenged by seating; the Hendry House is composed of a couple of different rooms and not everyone could fit in the "main" room for the reception. We could have filled the first room with tables too but were concerned about blocking flow in and out of the room with the buffet. The evening ended up being colder than expected and everyone wanted to be inside; we had thought more people would linger outside.

There are some rules to be mindful of at the Hendry House; all beverages must be poured, meaning no bottles of beer and no cans of soda can be distributed. Everything must be completed by 10 PM; rentals removed, the house cleaned, etc. The staff of the Hendry House was very responsive and helpful - ready with suggestions and quick to answer my last minute questions. They provide a great packet of information on layout, rules, etc.

The other consideration for the Hendry House is that you are on the flight path for National Airport and it is a public park; the planes overhead during our ceremony were a minor inconvenience and there were some folks using the trails/visiting the park during our wedding.

One last but very important detail: our caterer loved that there was a full kitchen available and a ramp up to the kitchen from the service driveway!

Overall, I highly recommend the Hendry House.

Hendry House was a great spot for our wedding. We had about 70 guests, rented a tent for the front lawn for the reception and had cocktail hour inside the house. Since it rained, we also had the ceremony under the tent instead of outside in front of the trellis.

We really liked the open and classic feel of the house and grounds, and our guests liked having different areas to gather and talk instead of being confined to just one room in a banquet hall. It is definitely a unique location that provides for many photo opportunities.

Before the event, Hendry House staff were easy to communicate with and provided good service. The day of the event, the house and grounds were clean and manicured as promised. The only down side was our tent. Hendry House has only one preferred tent vendor, L&A Tent Rentals, and they provided extremely poor service. Further, Hendry House staff stood up for them when we expressed issues and later said we could have used ANY tent vendor--NOT what we were told when we signed our contract. L&A Tent Rentals is a serious problem for Hendry House and is the sole reason we did not give them a higher score.

We stumbled upon Hendry House here on wedding wire, and are so happy we did! We were set on having an outdoor wedding somewhere in the DC area (where we live), but couldn't find much that didn't break the bank. Hendry House to the rescue! This place provided the *perfect* venue for the intimate outdoor wedding we had in mind, and we were able to have the wedding, cocktail hour, and reception all in one place (saves time transporting people around, so you can milk every minute of the big day).

Location: You've probably driven past this neighborhood a hundred times if you live in Arlington, and never noticed Hendry House/Fort CF Smith park. It's right off Spout Run nestled in a cute little residential neighborhood. It's quiet, feels serene since you're surrounded by trees and an open meadow, but yet it's a 5 minute drive to Rosslyn (where our guests were staying).

Staff: Sharon was a delight to work with. Very prompt in her replies, responsive to email (hallelujah! so many vendors aren't...), and open to all the ideas we had about what we did and didn't want. She was also patient as we revised our plans numerous times, and extended the time we wanted to be in the house pre-wedding. The on site staff person on our big day (Ann, I believe) was also great. All of the payment and paperwork stuff went really, really, smoothly.

House/Grounds: So classy. If you're having a small wedding, I can't imagine a better place. The grounds are kept beautifully, the house is maintained to perfection, and it's simple. No kitschy mansion knick knacks or overly ornate decor; just simple wood floors, nice wide chair rail/shelving around the walls, and a fireplace in the front room. Our guests ate outside, with the bar on the side patio, and the cake and DJ set up inside, and it worked really well. There's also a nice bride's room upstairs with a large mirror and full bathroom, mini fridge, full length mirror, etc. Outside, everything is manicured beautifully. We had our ceremony on the side lawn under the wisteria trellis, and with that, didn't feel the need to have a florist.

Only drawback: You have to be out by 10:00, no ifs, ands, or buts. I thin our crew probably could have kept on dancing until about 2am, but the hotel our guests were staying at (the Hotel Palomar in Rosslyn) was kind enough to keep their bar and outdoor patio open for us late that night, so we just moved the party there after we had to leave Hendry House, and it actually worked out fine. We did start our wedding a bit earlier (4:30) to ensure enough time for dinner and lots of dancing.

I highly recommend Hendry House if you're looking for an affordable (by local standards; and there's a small discount if you're an Arlington county resident), convenient, and classy place to hold you event! Also, one last thing - the grounds behind the house provide a great backdrop for photos between the ceremony and dinner. : )

We were very pleased with The Hendry House as our wedding venue. We communicated often with Sharon throughout the planning process. She provided good support and information about the venue. The greenery and landscaped gounds and the renovated house itself are lovely and provided a beautiful backdrop for our outdoor ceremony at the arch on the property, cocktail hour on the porch, and tented reception. The only drawback we experienced is that they only use one tent company, L&A Tent Rentals, and our experience with that company was not as positive.

The Hendry House was exactly the reception venue that we had envisioned, but we didn't know this until we saw the wonderful property and house. We wanted something unique, connected to nature, architecturally attractive, and a venue that provided a sense of comfort both for us and for our guests.

We toured several other reception venues that didn't work for us: the ballrooms were too stereotypical and felt cramped and unnatural. The Hendry House was the third and final venue that we toured. As soon as we walked up the the long path towards the house, we knew. Set in Fort CF Smith Park, the location and house were a dream come true. The yard is a beautiful mix of natural and landscaped elements and the exterior and interior of the house are full of art deco features and cozy nooks. We used both the interior and exterior for our wedding: placing a tent in front of the house and using brick patio as the dance floor. The porch was used for our DJ and bar and the interior was used for cocktail hour and for people to wander in and out of as they wished.

The only negative with the Hendry House was the speed with which dates get snatched up: we had to decide immediately. The Hendry House's events director is completely competent but not as warm as one might hope, considering the happy occasion. Finally, the Hendry House is perfect for a couple who is willing and able to control all elements and vendors at their wedding: YOU can design the reception you want.

We had a lovely fall wedding at the Hendry House. The woman in charge, Sharon, was very helpful and very responsive. One thing I did not love was that they only have one tent company they use, and they were not the easiest to deal with. Also, make sure you ask a lot of questions about a rain plan and what the location will look like on your wedding date (will flowers be blooming, will the grass be cut, etc.) Our guests were very comfortable here and we enjoyed the setting.

Superb venue in Arlington. The house and the grounds are well-suited for a wedding/reception and photograph well. We had a small wedding, about 50 guests and the house accommodated them easily. Tables were set up inside and out, making a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Also, bride and groom's rooms upstairs are big enough to spread out and relax in before the ceremony. Finally, Sharon and the staff are really easy to work with and made everything really clear as to park restrictions, costs, etc.,

The one drawback, and it is something we didn't catch on our first walk-through, is that it can be directly under the approach and departure route for Reagan Nat'l Airport. We were concerned about this for the ceremony but it turns out it was only a minor nuisance and really, the way our officiant handled it, turned out to be slightly humorous, bringing a little levity to the event.

All in all, highly recommended -- and helps support a local city and park.

The Hendry House is an EXCELLENT value. You get a beautiful, air-conditioned (and I presume heated in the winter) old house with multiple bathrooms and big rooms. The grounds surrounding the house are secluded and beautiful. Even though it poured on our wedding day, everyone kept commenting on how beautiful the site was. If you want to plan every detail of your wedding, this is a great place for you. The manager of the Hendry House is very responsive - she only answered the phone during regular business hours (when she was there) but responded to email almost instantaneously. She is very hands-off with the actual planning - our caterer was the one who recommended where the tables and tent should go. In regards to flexibility: the house has a max of something like 80 people. If you want a bigger wedding, you have to go with a tent outside. The maximum number with their preferred tent company is 150. So if you want a medium-sized wedding in a beautiful location at a great value, this is great place to look!

The Hendry House was a beautiful spot that fulfilled my idea of my wedding being "simple & classy." The grounds had flowers in bloom. We used L&A Tent Rentals for tent, table, chairs and dance floor... they did a spectacular job! The air conditioned house was a great get-away from the heat on July 11! It is in a neighborhood, so it really did seem to make our wedding cozy and quaint! Even though we had to be out of the venue by 9:30, we all went back to the Key Bridge Marriott, where all the guests were staying, and continued the party in their bar! I 100% recommend the Hendry House!

We chose Hendry House for the beautiful park setting and the charming arts & crafts style historic house. As an Arlington County property, it offers a reduced price for county residents and the manager Sharon is great to work with. We palnned to hold the ceremony on the patio in front of the house, dinner inside and dancing again on the patio. But weather did not cooperate so we had to rent a tent (LA Tent Rentals was the only vendor Hendry allows) and it was not top quality. In fact our musicians had to relocate to avoid the leaks! But the house itself was lovely and easily held a seated dinner for 65 at 7 round tables (though not available from Hendry;they only have rectangular ones) in three adjoining rooms. All in all I would recommend this site for it's unique charm and beauty but it definitely comes with some caveats: you will have to find your own vendors for everything, from flowers to music, and I recommend looking for those who are familiar with the site and its rules. Also, noise ordinances require guests to be gone by 10pm at the latest. That said and in spite of the rain, we had a great celebration.

Great wedding site! It is a county park, so there are some rules and regulations for starting/ending time. Users are allowed to bring in own caterers, wine/alcohol, and DJs. It was requested that we use their tent service, which was fine. They did a great job. The house and park is extremely well maintained. I would certainly recommend them to others. Arlington residents even recieve a discount! Our communication with the Hendry House staff were fabulous.

This restored manor house in a county park that was a Civil War fort was exactly what we were looking for for our reception. In fact it was the only site I looked at or considered. It was important to us to have a beautiful setting and to have it to ourselves, as opposed to half a hotel ballroom. To accommodate 120 people at the reception dinner, we rented a tent for the grounds, and that worked out splendidly. At the last minute our rehearsal dinner site fell through but we were able to book and use the Hendry House itself for about 50 persons at a sit-down dinner where the large interior rooms provided a very different setting that worked equally well. Sharon Casey, the manager, was extremely easy to work with.

This is a beautiful place to have your wedding and/or reception. I do recommend it, so long as you are aware of just a couple of things:

1) After your original consultation, you will not be able to make an appointment to get back into the house with any of your vendors on a weekend. You will need to take off work to do a walkthrough with your planner, caterer, photographer or whatever. They will only make weekend appointments for "new business." They will also not be able to guarantee you ANY time for a rehearsal at the house the day before your wedding, unless of course you are willing to rent the property the day before as well (thus increasing your expenses).

2) If your event is greater than about 65 guests, you will likely need to rent a tent or tents for the outdoors, as there is no one room big enough in the house for a ceremony and not enough room for all your guests to sit for dinner if it rains. This will add considerably to your expenses, so budget accordingly. Also know that the Hendry House has only ONE preferred tent vendor. You MUST use this vendor (L&A Tents), which doesn't do much for competitive pricing or comparison shopping. Before our event, I read a couple of very stinging reviews of this tent vendor on the Internet and was very worried, but had no choice. Actually, they (the tent folks) did everything they promised and charged us what we expected, so I don't have a complaint about them so much as a "heads up" to prospective brides and bridegrooms that this is the case. Some of the reasoning for this is sound (they can't have one event being set up when someone's tent from a different vendor has yet to be taken down from the previous night), but it's still disconcerting to find out there's an actual monopoly on this service.

3) They won't make this clear to you when you go to inspect the site or sign the contract, but you need to know that whatever time you contract at the house (say 2-10 pm), they will expect all of your guests to be gone more than an HOUR before that end-time, for the caterer to clean up. We had been under the impression that everything could be turned off by 9:30 and the bar closed, with the caterer beginning to clean up around 9:00 and being done by 10:00 with guests still milling around (which the caterer agreed to and thought was fine). Then just a few days before the wedding, Hendry House told us that every guest would have to leave by 8:30! That seemed ridiculous, and would have considerably shortened our reception time and thrown off our whole schedule for the event. It was very upsetting at the last moment. Thankfully our wedding planner straightened things out, but we ended up paying for an additional hour so the caterer could stay until 11:00 (even though they didn't need that much time).

Overall -- We did get a fantastic backdrop for our wedding and reception, and I wouldn't discourage you from using the Hendry House as we did. Everyone said it was beautiful, and no complaints from our guests. I guess you just need to keep in mind that this is a county park that hires the house out for weddings and other events, but is not set up to be a "full-service" wedding venue. If you know the few things that I've written here, at least you will not be surprised - and that is half the battle. All places have their drawbacks, and overall this place was so beautiful that we probably would have still used it knowing what we do now. Best wishes for a great wedding!

If you have dreamed of an outdoor ceremony and reception, The Hendry House is a gem of a place in Arlington. I never knew existed until we were looking for our wedding location and we only lived 1.5 miles away. We had both our ceremony and reception here and loved every minute of it. The ceremony was out the front of the house and a beautiful setting with the trees and wildflower field in the background. The reception was under a tent on the side lawn. We used the inside of the house for the cocktail hour and it was perfect. If you have a small wedding (less than 60) the inside of the house is great for a reception anything larger you really need a tent.

Only things I wish they would change is that they charge extra to rent their white folding chairs and charge a fee to put a tent on the lawn. Most people need to put a tent up so I think the tent fee should just be included in the price of the house or done away with entirely. Same with the chairs.

Still if we had to do it all over again we would choose the Hendry House.

Hendry House is set on an Arlington County park. The house is beautiful - not a mansion like most other "house" venues - so it's small and will only accommodate about 65 people. We ended up getting a tent through their preferred vendor - which my planner worried about since she had never used them before. But they did a good job and according to my planner was also reasonably priced. The venue is a very good deal especially for Arlington County residents. With it you have access to tables and chairs although we decided to rent ours from another vendor.

We had cocktail hour in the house and porch, dinner in the tent, cake cutting and dancing in the house. My planner also provided club chairs and ottomans so that people had a place to sit down inside the house who didn't want to dance. I would highly recommend that. It created a really nice atmosphere.

My only complaint is that the event has to end fairly early because the park is within a residential area. But otherwise, the perfect spot. My husband and I plan on coming here every year on our anniversary and have a picnic.

Read less

I loved having our wedding here! The house is beautiful and the park area is lovely as well. It's a great deal, since it's a County park, compared to a lot of venues! We had hoped to have the ceremony outside, but it was raining a bit that day, we had to move it indoors, but it was still lovely. We were able to take pictures outdoors since it wasn't raining that hard. We rented a tent so everyone could sit together, and that worked out well. I was really pleased with the venue and the service from the staff people there.

The Hendry House at Fort C.F. Smith Park is a unique and beautiful setting for an outdoor wedding. We had some stipulations to follow from my Church regarding an outdoor wedding, so we actually had our ceremony on the porch facing the house and the reception on the brick patio out front. Three years later, our guests are still talking about how beautiful the wedding was. Do be aware, however, that the venue is small and you need to plan carefully for the layout of tables, the bar, dance floor, etc. We had a cocktail reception so the space was less of an issue. We also lucked out and had absolutely beautiful weather and watched the sun set over the wildflower field toward the end of the reception. You also have to end your reception early (by 9pm) unless you want to pay for extra time. In all though, if I were to do it again, I would have my wedding in the same place. You can't find a more unique or naturally beautiful (and affordable) setting in Arlington.

The Hendry House is exceptional value, particularly if you live in Arlington County and qualify for the reduced fees. We had approximately 160 guests at our wedding which is about the maximum that this site can accommodate. We held our ceremony on the front lawn and our cocktail hour inside the house and on the front porch. Dinner and dancing were under a tent on the grassy field across from the house. The park setting is perfect for outdoor photos and the staff was extremely attentive. I made several changes to the contract in the month leading up to our wedding without any difficulty. The only downfall to holding your wedding at the Hendry House is the requirement that all music be turned off at 9:30PM because the park is located in a residential area. Our ceremony began at 3:30PM and we had plenty of time for cocktails/dinner/dancing before everyone left between 9:30 and 10PM. Since it was still rather early, we continued the celebration at a bar in Georgetown just a short cab ride away. I'd highly recommend the Hendry House, particularly if you'd like to hold both your ceremony and reception outdoors. The house is large enough to accommodate an indoor ceremony/reception for about 50-75 people but the beauty of the area lies in the surrounding park and gardens. I believe we paid $2500 to have the house for 8hrs on Saturday afternoon/evening --a steal for the Washington, DC area!
