I can understand a business making a promise it can't keep,after all many things are out of our control. But House of Brides in Glen Ellyn REPEATEDLY made promises they couldn't keep. We did finally get our bridesmaid dresses, but for many weeks we had many reasons to believe that we might not get them in time for the wedding.
BUYER BEWARE - You will be given a delivery date. When it has come and gone you will call and be given another delivery date. In response to your repeated inquiries as to the status of your dress/dresses, you will be told many, many things, including your order will be pulled and red flagged, they will put a rush on your dresses, the manager is not in today,the order dept is closed today, deliveries only come on Tuesdays, your delivery will be here at 4:00 this Friday, and on and on and on. When you decide that you are tired of not getting any satisfaction over the phone, you will visit the store and request to see some proof that your dresses are on order/have shipped, etc. You will be told that HOB does not have the capacity to print that information (?!?) the manager is not here today, and she won't be there tomorrow either, there is no way to contact the manager's boss, etc, etc.
When we finally got the dresses, the sash was actually navy, instead of black. And they were enormous! The women at the counter insisted the sash was indeed black, and that the designer uses European sizing (it's really scary to me when people lie so easily) I just grabbed the dresses and ran. Obviously we did not want to use HOB for alterations. One positive thing I will say about the store - Jennifer is wonderful. She helped us choose dresses.

This is the only bad review I've ever written, but I would avoid this store at all costs. I never planned to shop for the my wedding dress here. However, when I wasn't finding what I was looking for, we decided to check it out. I will say, the style selection is unmatched. I found a dress I loved, so I hate to report so negatively. Buying your dress here, though, ensures you are forfeiting all customer service. Every time I went into the store I saw at least 1 other bride arguing and fighting to get her dress in time for her wedding! I saw an earlier date to make sure I'd get mine, and good thing I did, because they sent the dress by not the veil. Also, they try to get you to pay $350 min for alterations. I took mine elsewhere and got the bustle, inserted cups, and shortened straps for $45. Not to mention no one who worked there ever knew anything, and were rude on top of it.

Lots of selection, but painful people.

House of Brides has a great selection of dresses. My bridal party and I ordered my dress as well as their dresses. The biggest problem however was timeliness. When we called to get an update on approximate arrival dates, each of us received a different date. My gown did not arrive until a week before my wedding and still needed to be altered. All was well in the end but the time crunch was a little stressful!

They were very nice and helpful when I was there. The only down side is that they do not provide undergarments like most other places do. When I asked is they had a slip for me to try on with my mermaid style dress, it took them a half hour to find one.

We were very pleased with the service we received at House of Brides. We had read a lot of negative reviews about this establishment, and were not sure how we would be treated. My daughter found her "perfect dress" right away, but needed to shop around to make sure that was the one. Each time we entered House of Brides, we were treated with respect and courtesy. By the time we went back for the final fittings, we felt like old friends with many of the employees. The woman who did the alterations was especially wonderful. The only negative was that the dress took a lot longer to come in than we were comfortable with, there were a couple of frantic phone calls when they couldn't find the dress, and the alterations had to be rushed. Other than that, it was a very good experience.

Do I have to select any stars? Okay, where to begin. One of our bridesmaids had the hardest time placing her order which help up the order date. She tried emailing the order, faxing the order and finally called the order in. After she finally placed the order, my fiancee called to confirm that they had everything they needed to place the order. They said yes.

Come the middle of August, we still hadn't received dresses and our wedding is September 19. My finacee starts calling along with a few of her bridesmaids trying to see where the dresses are. For some reason they came up flagged and they put a rush on it. The dresses came in a week and a half later, however, there were only 4 dresses, not 5. The dress for the bridesmaid that had the biggest issue ordering was not there. They had no record of it being ordered nor her existing for that matter. Unfortunately, she never received any confirmation and after looking at credit card statements, noticed that she was never charged. Rather than owning up to the mistake or at least helping to provide a solution House of Bums said that without proof they are willing to do nothing. We keep trying to call and send emails, but no one will respond. Knowing that even a rush order dress takes 6-8 weeks with only 3.5 till the wedding, we went to Volles to buy a sample dress at nearly double the cost (to be honest, we should have just bought all of them here).

But that isn't the end of the story. The matron of honor's dress was shipped to her house as she lives in Houston. She recently moved there from St. Louis, so we called in her new address before they were shipped. She still has not received the dress even though another bridesmaid already received hers in New York last week.

DO NOT GO HERE EVER. SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME AND FRUSTRATION. I CAN'T EXPRESS THIS ENOUGH!

I was in my sister in law's wedding 2 months ago. We ordered our dresses from here, and I got mine altered there as well. When I went in to have it altered, they pinned the dress to fit me with the cups pinned into the dress. We also discussed removing the straps at this time, and I paid for the alterations. When I came back to get my dress 1 month later, there were no cups and the straps had not been removed. I reminded the lady (same person as the first time) that I had requested both, she said she could do both and have the dress back to me in a few weeks. The wedding was in a week, so I had no additional time for her to complete the tasks we had discussed 1 month prior. So she said she could do it while I waited, and I waited there a half hour.

When she came back out, the cups looked like they had been sewn in by a 5 year old with thread everywhere, and the dress was IMPOSSIBLY tight. It was cutting off circulation to my back it was so bad. I told her about this, and she said there was no time to fix it. I went to leave, and she and the cashier stopped me. They demanded that I pay an additional $30 for the alterations, EVEN THOUGH they were the ones who had ruined the dress and made it not fit me. I was floored, but not wanting anything to happen to the bride's order (as her name was also on my receipt), I paid and left.

I immediately contacted them to get a full refund on what I had paid both times for alterations, but no one from the company got back to me. After 2 weeks, I took my case to the Better Business Bureau. After a month, they finally responded on there. They told me that I should take my dress back in so they could fix their work, but they wouldn't refund me any of the alterations money. I explained that the wedding was already over, and I couldn't go back in time with a well-fitting dress, but they refuse to listen to me.

Let me start off by saying I loved my wedding dress. It was beautiful, and Fran was amazing...she was very helpful and so nice.

Trying to get ahold of anyone at this store is like pulling teeth. No one ever calls you back when they say they would. My dress was late and I would call to find out a status and no one in the store could find tracking information. One of the times I called to speak to someone, they said they'd call the Vendor for me and call me back...3 days later, I still hadn't heard anything. I called them back and they said they still had no tracking information so that must have meant it didn't ship yet. The next day (two weeks before the wedding) the dress magically appears....weird how they couldn't find tracking information though, right?? This was/is a bride's worst nightmare.

If you are purchasing a wedding dress or bridesmaids dresses make sure you give them a fake wedding date of at least 2 months prior to the real date!

Service was awful. Even when I made an appointment, they schedule me with someone who was working I the tuxedo side. Never came back to check if I needed anything, thank god I had my mom and sister with me to help. Not only did this happen once, but twice. Once on the weekend and during the week. It was not a fun way to start off my wedding planning experiences. If it wasn't for the fact that I loved my dress so much I would not have given them the business, nor would I recommend anyone to go there.... Maybe a last resort only.

I was very apprehensive from reading reviews, but I was drawn to the plus size Diva shop attached to this store. Every experience I had from start to finish was WONDERFUL. Tracey helped me pick the perfect dress, got me an extra discount, and ordered everything perfectly.
I called a month after purchasing the dress to see if they could tell me an anticipated arrival date and they couldn't- but the woman at the front desk could tell me the dress had been ordered. I was so so so nervous, but lo and behold, 5 months after it was ordered, it arrived. I had my first fitting with no problem. They even opened the shop early for me to come in at 11am to fit my schedule.
For the second fitting, I missed a phone call at 7:30am saying that the seamstress was sick and had to cancel my 12noon appointment. I noticed the voicemail around 10am and called to reschedule.
The alterations department told me that since they noticed I was an out-of-town bride, the seamstress would make a special trip in, despite her illness, to accommodate me! So nice! Who does that? A great shop.
I realize a lot can go wrong in the process, but for me, everything went right.

I got a good deal on a beautiful veil, headband and dress but I'm not sure I wold recommend going here. My dress came in quickly but my veil and headband took much longer and when I called to ask about them I could not get anyone to call me back. I probably called four times before I finally got someone on the phone who could answer my questions. They are not that friendly at the front desk either. Fran who helped me pick out my dress was wonderful as well as the woman who did the tailoring but the customer service after your purchase the dress is horrible

ZERO stars for this nightmare! My dress, veil and alterations were paid for in full on 01/31/11 for my 10/08/11 wedding. I was told my dress would take 4-6 months to come in, with the first fitting 4 weeks before the wedding. I told them I was a 6 dress, but the rep said to order a size 8 since couture dresses run small. By the last week in August, I had not heard anything from HOB. I called and left a message for ordering. Debbie called back and said my dress would be in within 2 weeks. After those 2 weeks passed with no update, I left another message. Debbie called back and said there was a delay, it would be in 9/16. By 9/15 I still had no update. I called yet again. On 9/16 Debbie returned my call to say my dress was delayed in customs, and would be ANOTHER week. She said there was nothing they could do, my dress was ordered at the end of August (NOT JANUARY...), it shipped by ocean from China to the mfg in NY, as soon as the mfg received the dress it would be sent overnight to HOB and besides, couture dresses take 8-12 months. I reminded her HOB told me 4-6 months, and asked what if my dress never came in. She replied I could come in and reselect off the rack. If I wanted off-the-rack, I would not have purchased my dress over 8 months in advance. Thursday (9/22) PM, HOB called that my dress arrived. I wanted to make a fitting appt asap, but was sent to the alterations voicemail. After 2 hours with no return call, I called back and refused to get off the line until I had an alterations appt (they kept me on hold for 15+ minutes). When I finally got alterations, I was informed fittings were only Mon-Thur 12:00-6:00PM. My first fitting was 9/26. I waited 15 minutes past my appt time before the seamstress came in. I wanted several things done: take out mfg bra cups, add bra cups inside, take the dress in on the sides and top (it was too big-they had me order the wrong size), add a satin panel and bustle the sweep train. The dress was too long, but the seamstress wanted to try only shortening the under-layers so she would not have to cut the lace top-layer. And they gave me the wrong veil. On 9/28 the rep called that oops, they put my sticker on the wrong veil but the correct one arrived. I truly believe they tried to switch out the veil I purchased for a cheaper substitute. I also don't think I got the correct veil (no item # on the one I finally recd). My second fitting was 10/3, and I almost cried. The dress was too long, the mfg bra cups were still showing, it was too big in the bust and and the bustle was terrible. All the buttons were sewn in at line at the bottom of the zipper, so when bustled it made a boxy silhouette over my hips. I told her her these needed to be redone. She said OK, come back 10/5 and it would all be ready...for my 10/8 wedding. On 10/5 I went back. The dress seemed to be OK and it went home with me. On my wedding day I noticed what a terrible job they did for $295 alterations. The bra cups stitching inside was loose, the bustle buttons were not evenly spaced, the dress was still too big on top and the lace outer-layer was not hemmed evenly. At my wedding, one bra cup came out completely and a bustle button broke so my train dragged. No one noticed and I still had the best wedding ever, but HOB put me through a nightmare experience. I would rather have paid full price or more for my dress from a different shop than deal with the fiasco that is HOB.

When I finally got alterations, I was informed fittings were only Mon-Thur 12:00-6:00PM. My first fitting was 9/26. I waited 15 minutes past my appt time before the seamstress came in. I wanted several things done: take out mfg bra cups, add bra cups inside, take the dress in on the sides and top (it was too big-they had me order the wrong size), add a satin panel and bustle the sweep train. The dress was too long, but the seamstress wanted to try only shortening the under-layers so she would not have to cut the lace top-layer. And they gave me the wrong veil. On 9/28 the rep called that oops, they put my sticker on the wrong veil but the correct one arrived. I truly believe they tried to switch out the veil I purchased for a cheaper substitute. I also don't think I got the correct veil (no item # on the one I finally recd). My second fitting was 10/3, and I almost cried. The dress was too long, the mfg bra cups were still showing, it was too big in the bust and and the bustle was terrible. All the buttons were sewn in at line at the bottom of the zipper, so when bustled it made a boxy silhouette over my hips. I told her her these needed to be redone. She said OK, come back 10/5 and it would all be ready...for my 10/8 wedding. On 10/5 I went back. The dress seemed to be OK and it went home with me. On my wedding day I noticed what a terrible job they did for $295 alterations. The bra cups stitching inside was loose, the bustle buttons were not evenly spaced, the dress was still too big on top and the lace outer-layer was not hemmed evenly. At my wedding, one bra cup came out completely and a bustle button broke so my train dragged. No one noticed and I still had the best wedding ever, but HOB put me through a nightmare experience. I would rather have paid full price or more for my dress from a different shop than deal with the fiasco that is HOB. Read less

This is one of the rudest stores I have ever talked to. Another House of Brides ruined my dress during alterations. The Glen Ellyn seamstress offered to look at the dress and try to fix it 2 days before my wedding- I was so relieved. When I called that morning to confirm the appointment, the manager told me that they were refusing to see me since I did not buy my dress there. I told her that I would pay extra just for her to look at the dress and she flat out told me that they could do nothing for me, as I was in tears on the phone. I asked her if she could check with the seamstress and call me back either way if there was anything she could do- I never got even a call back. I just don't understand how a store could be so heartless to a bride 2 days before her wedding.
Luckily my maid-of-honor found an excellent seamstress with over 30 years experience and she fixed the dress completely. House of Brides is a complete scam- DO NOT SHOP THERE. It's not worth the aggravation.

VERY dissatisfied with this company AFTER the Bride's & Bridesmaid's dresses were ordered. Seems they are only interested in the sell, after that, it's nothing short of a miracle to have someone return your call. Their computer system is antiquated, still operating in DOS. From a faxed order sent multiple times, to adding extra length to the wrong dress, to the dresses coming in 2 weeks apart from each other AFTER instructed to order at the same time to prevent this, to alterations for the bride a flat $400.00 fee. This company's job is to order and deliver dresses - one would think they would be more organized.

I had a horrible experience with House of brides! I didnt get a a customized/special dress. It was simple and plain, but for some reason took 10 months to get in and was ordered the wrong size. then they wanted me to pay for the "fixing of the size" and pay $450. They were so rude to me and my dress ended up getting fixed 1 week before my wedding. I HIGHLY recommend not using them, unless you love stress and head aches!

House of Brides in NAPERVILLE was great to work with. I got my bridal gown there and my consultant, Mikayla, was amazing to work with! She truly dedicated her time to just helping me find my dress. Unless you want to be a nerve racked bride who wants to have to follow up on every order from this place, stay away. I ordered my bridesmaid dresses from here well over 6 months before the wedding, some of the dresses came 7 weeks before the weddding, but one came 1 1/2 weeks before the wedding, and that was only because i called daily to check on the status and have people research where the dress was. I was called and told that my veil had arrived, 3 weeks beofore the wedding, but when I went to go pick it up 2 weeks before the wedding it could not be found and I was told that the "vendor was behind" even though I was called just a week before to pick up the veil. It was "rush" delivered 2 days later. They boast that their alterations people have 20 years of experience but I highly doubt that based on the experience I had. I had to tell them to hide the hooks/buttons for the bustle, and the hooks ripped off on my wedding day leaving me to have to deal with a cathedral train that was constantly in the way at my reception. I would not recommend them to anyone.

I had an overall okay experience with House of Brides. I absolutely LOVED my dress. But some experiences could have been better. I have to rate the general House of Brides lower due to my poor experience at the Schaumburg location - I have to warn you ladies DO NOT go to the Schaumburg location - as they will treat you like crap. Also - do not attempt to go to any of these stores without an appointment.

I had a pleasant experience at Glen Ellyn location - I would rank about 4.2 Tracy my consultant was amazing and very honest about what looked good and what didn't. Very informative about bustles and showing me what accessories worked with the dress. Furthermore, she was very VERY honest about pricing and where/what I could do to help bring my costs down in other areas since my dress was a little more than I wanted to spend but I was in love with it.

I had a wonderful experience with their alterations department. THey were very patient with me, listened to all my concerns, and literally took me through the process one step at a time and made sure they had me ready to go for my wedding with time to spare. We had an all in all good experience with House of Brides. My bridesmaids and mom all got their dresses from them. They were a bit expensive in my opinion and after traveling to different stores I found that depending on what town you were in, the price on the SAME dress could be more than $50 at one location than another. We were able to negotiate with them and get them to match the online prices of the dresses, they say they cannot do this, but I am here to tell you that they can....
