We got married at the Heights Fire Station on 10.4.14. and have NO complaints. The place is amazing! They've made a lot of renovations over the years, and it looks awesome! We held the ceremony downstairs and the reception upstairs. I loved that my guests didn't have to drive anywhere in between the two "events."

I am a very DIY person, and I love that the venue allows you to decorate it yourself. You also have the freedom to hire your own caterers, bartenders, etc. They pretty much just provide a lovely space, and it's up to you to put your own stamp on it.

Lauriel was easy to work with, very responsive, and gave us our full deposit back IN THREE DAYS! I've never gotten money back so quickly!

Overall, I recommend this venue to any bride out there. I absolutely adore it.

Very good value for a venue in Houston for a wedding smaller than 130 guests. Lovely historic venue, with loft-style feel.

Our wedding reception at the Houston Heights Fire Station was absolutely wonderful. It is such a naturally beautiful and unique venue, and we highly recommend it! It's a great place for an affordable and memorable reception in the Heights. The outside of the building is beautiful for photos (with red bricks and dark wood doors) and the inside is lovely (with wood floors, framed historic photos on the walls and pretty light fixtures, ceilings and molding). The venue was recently restored and is in great shape. Also, there are huge windows upstairs, and the lighting was beautiful inside as the sun went down.
Despite what others have said here, I thought the staff was good to work with and responsive to us over email (we live in New York). They have several rules in the contract, but they are easy to follow. We hired the cleaning company to make sure we got the deposit back.
We had about 110 guests, with a cocktail hour downstairs and the reception with dinner and dancing upstairs. They provide the tables and chairs and you are free to decorate however you want. Overall great experience - thanks!

I recently had my wedding here (February 4th). Here is a review I posted on Yelp, I figured this may be helpful for other brides in at least knowing what they're about to deal with if they use this as their venue.

This place as a venue was terrific, however, the woman that ran it was RUDE. She was rude the entire time I dealt with her, and on the day of my wedding I was late (it started raining and the traffic got bad-her daughter in law had passed away and I understood she was in a hurry, but I was not intentionally late). She reprimanded me on being late, which is fine. I apologized to her and her response was, "Well, it's not like my daughter in law PLANNED on dying this week" or something like that. Just extremely rude. I couldn't help that I was late, I'm normally early for everything but this woman was just nasty to me. I'm sorry for her loss, but please don't take it out on me.
I got $250 out of $500 of my deposit back (which I was expecting from other reviews), but this was her reasoning..
She claimed one of her trashcans was missing (Why would we steal a giant trash can??)
We didn't mop the stairs (I admit we didn't, but they were back, but it's understandable that we did get charged for them)
She said we didn't take any of the trash out (which we did, I stayed to clean and lock up)
She also claimed we moved chairs from downstairs to upstairs which makes no sense-I did a count when set up and cleaned up and it was the same number.

I"m not going to dispute this, it's a huge hassle, I just wish she would have been honest in the checklist, and I don't understand how mopping stairs would cost $250 (I know this includes the other things she claimed we did or didn't do, but even with all of that, seriously??)

Great Historic Venue. It is a lot of DIY, but that was what I did for most of my wedding. I had a wonderful experience with the Houston Heights Fire Station association. I did hire someone to clean- up afterward (the assocation recommend somone) and I did recieve my entire deposit back.

I got married October 15, 2011. I used Marmion Park as our ceremony venue which is also run by the Heights Association. The gazebo was so pretty for our ceremony. I used thehistoris heights firhouse for our reception. I used the downstairs for a cocktail hour while we were at the partaking pictures and did my main reception upstairs. I love the old feel of the building, and DIY worked for me bc I am very creative and had alot of help. They provide the tables and chairs so you have to bring in your own caterer, linens etc. It's not a huge room upstairs but perfect size bc you don't have a lot of empty space, felt very intimate. My co Laing would be Lauriel, she is the person you have to interact with for this venue. She's does not work with you at all. It's her way or no way. The day of our wedding she was following my husband around being very unpleasant. We paid for the AC to be on the day of and she was being extremely rude to us about having the doors open to bring in all of our supplies. He had to yell at her to leave and that she had no business being there. If we pId for the AC we shouldn't have had her pm Lao ing to is about the door being on to set up. We did use their cleaning service, which I would recommend. We did get our deposit back by the time we got home from our honeymoon. I would recommend the venue if your looking for a unique old feel type of place at a good price. But the woman you have to dealwithis awful, sobe prepared on that.

We had a wonderful wedding reception at the fire station! It is just what we were looking for: affordable, unique, wood floors and tons of windows for great lighting for a day time wedding. The staff there is somewhat friendly but since it is a DIY venue, you rarely interact with them. The only issue we had was the addition of the gigantic elevator as mentioned in a previous review. We were not informed either and we are glad we didn't need to use the downstairs. We did get all of our deposits back unlike many people in the past. I like to believe it's because we hired the cleaning crew they normally hire so they know how to clean. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better wedding and this place set the stage for a great party!

Heights Fire station is run by a civic group and has a completely different business model than any other wedding venue you will come into contact with. If you sign the contract, you are bound to those terms. They will not change. The venue can only be seen on Saturdays, you have to clean it, and you have to use their tables and chairs etc. No sense in complaining about what is in bold print in your contract. The end result is you get a venue with space for Ceremony AND Reception for 30% what it would cost any where else.

Good things:
You absolutely can't beat the price for the location.
The association was responsive to all emails and phone calls.
The neighborhood doesn't bother you.
Plenty of room for 100-120 guests.
You can use your own caterer and liquor supply.

Negatives:
*They added a massive elevator in between the time we signed the contract and had our wedding. It goofed up my table plot because it sat in the middle of the space. We weren't notified of this addition.
*They wouldn't unlock the garage door so my vendors had to use a small entrance in the back with a step. This seemed to add unnecessary wear and tear on the building.

I noticed some complaints about the venue showing around other potential bride and grooms on the day they rented the venue. This happened to me too and I didn't mind. This will happen at any venue you rent. However, I did have a couple of odd people wander in after the venue representation had left saying weird things like, "I'm looking for a cooler I left 3 weeks ago," and then acting annoyed when I purposely followed them around to be sure they didn't take anything. But again, this is common place to any venue you rent.

In summary, I only recommend you book this venue if you can truly do it yourself. Even with a coordinator you'll be performing most of the set up yourself. Also, read the contract thoroughly. They do not allow outside chairs and tables....it won't change. If you bring them in, prepare for your deposit to be obliterated. Also, bring in a lighting company (we used Pro/Sound) to provide LED lighting around the walls. The overhead lighting is flourescent and feels like a cafeteria (they don't allow candles).

If you feel comfortable with the parameters, your guests will love this historic, intimate venue.

The Venue itself allowed us to bring in our own food, liquor, linens, and decor. It's a "do-it-yourself" kind of venue, which is good for a creative mind and budget. The venue has an antique-old fashioned feel to it, which I think is beautiful. It did rain on my wedding day and other than the issue of a couple leaks in the roof, I had no real problem with the Venue itself. My problem was with the Venue's Contact. I was very disappointed because up until my actual Wedding day, I had no problem with her. She had always responded to all my questions/emails in a timely manner. So on My Wedding day, I was about 25-30 mins late due to traffic but my husband and others were there early for set up since we had to do everything ourselves. We were told we'd have the venue @9am. My crew arrived before 9am and to their surprise found that the Contact allowed people in to view/tour the venue. She advised my crew not to unload any of our things until I (the bride/contract signer) arrived to do the final walk through and pay the rental fee for tables & chairs (I was told I could pay this amount on the day of...we could only use theirs, they didn't allow outside vendors for tables & chairs). Once I arrived to find a several crowds of people touring the venue that I signed a contract to rent needless to say I wasn't exactly happy. The contact had no urgency in this matter. I had to kick several out myself. It took about an hour for us to get all the people out and on their way. I felt that this was a stress that was unnecessary. I felt that I had a contract for the entire day, paid my balances on time, and that this shouldn't have been an issue. I was not told that the venue would be open to the public on my Wedding day. I felt that the Venue Contact did not handle the situation that she created and did little to get the crowds out. She even left the venue herself before this issue was resolved.

FYI - This venue rental didn't include cleaning services. You have to either do the clean up yourselves or hire a cleaning crew. Also, no candles, tape, or tacks could be used for decorating so all decorations had to be free standing.
