Becky Owen of Hy-Vee Barlows Floral Department was our Floral Designer for our wedding in Rochester, MN.

Hands down, THIS.GIRL.KNOWS.HER.STUFF! She was fun and easy to talk to and she understood the look and feel that we were going for. She was very knowledgeable about flowers and was able to tell us if our expectations were realistic or not, to make recommendations to us when certain flowers might prove to be risky due the season, and was able to take our likes/dislikes and turn them into dazzling and beautiful displays.

We never had a hard time getting a hold of her or had much difficulty scheduling meetings or getting time with her to discuss the wedding and the flowers.

She did such and incredible job and my bridal bouquet was a surprise for me and it was something so much more spectacular that I could have ever imagined!

Hyvee Barlow's bakery did an excellent job with our wedding cake. The entire process was very smooth and accomodating - Denny (the head cake decorater) was one of the nicest vendors we worked with. For cake testing, Hyvee actually gives you entire cakes to take home! Three at a time! So have your friends over and decide what flavors you like best (our friends loved us!). Hyvee will let you do this multiple times too! I think throughout our wedding planning process we tried 9 different combinations of cakes before we finally made our decision.

We had brought in a complex cake design that I had found on theknot.com and Hyvee was willing to make this design. But it was going to cost us about $400, which was a little more than I wanted to spend for a non-fondant cake.

So I decided to go with a little more simpler style of cake. I looked through the pictures they had in their album at the bakery and picked out a chocolate three-tiered round cake that was decorated with leaves, vines, and fondant pumpkins, apples, and pears. It was perfect for our fall wedding. I thought this cake would be a little cheaper - around $325 was what I was initially quoted. But then somehow at our final meeting the price I was given was about $375 because he said it would cost him more to make the fondant fruit and pumpkins. I was a little bit disappointed about the increase in cost for those items, and he agreed to come down $10 in price. So that was nice. Still a little over our cake budget, but once you get to the end of wedding planning you kind of just have to let all the extra costs slide by.

Denny was concerned about our choice of outside frosting - chocolate fudge instead of the traditional buttercream. He thought that the fudge would maybe slip off the cake too much or show an indentation where the cake layers are. I really wanted the fudge though. He said he might have to mix it half and half with chocolate buttercream to get it to work. I told him to do what he had to do to make it work (I didn't want a cake wreck), but that I would prefer all fudge if possible. I don't know what he ended up doing in the end, but the cake looked perfect to me on the wedding day. And it looked and tasted like it was covered in the fudge frosting! So I was glad that it turned out!

The cake was all set up on it's beautiful stand in the reception hall when I arrived there early before the other guests. It was beautiful. So A+ to Hyvee Bakery for delivering the cake on time too!

Overall, I would highly recommend this bakery. We received many compliments from our guests throughout the night asking where our cake was from. Many people told me it was the best wedding cake they ever had. The chocolate cake was pretty moist and the whipped orange frosting filling was delicious with the chocolate cake and chocolate fudge frosting. You wouldn't think chocolate and orange would be a good combo, but trust us - it is one of their best! We tried Daube's in town too when we were sampling cakes. Overall we thought Hyvee's cakes were more moist than Daubes and just tasted better overall. They cost about 25% less too!

So I recommend meeting with Hyvee and considering them for your wedding cake before you put down a final payment anywhere else. They have a photobook of many cake designs they have done in the past, but they are also willing to consider any design you bring in too. And their entire staff is very friendly and helpful. Both my mom and husband thought that Denny was a very nice guy to work with. One of the best in the wedding industry! A+++ to Hyvee Bakery.
