We had a great experience with Kirkpatrick Chapel. The ladies in charge of running the rehearsal and making sure the wedding went smoothly were great. Pat Cogan was easy to get a hold of and responded to emails very quickly. The chapel was beautiful and perfect for our wedding.

We had our ceremony at Kirkpatrick Chapel last weekend, and got great reviews from our guests regarding the ceremony. The venue itself is beautiful and it has this great Aeolian Skinner organ, which made for very dramatic wedding music if you pick the right music. :) I do, however, agree with those who say the venue is rather inflexible. This is not the fault of the people who work there though - I found Patrick very pleasant to work with, and the student coordinator the day of the wedding, Amy, was also very nice. The university happens to be very strict with use of the premises - i.e. rent for 90 minute time block (including time for guests to arrive) and 30 minute rehearsal. All these restrictions are actually laid out in the contract that we signed from the very beginning, so it's not like a big surprise or anything like that. The restrictions do add some stress when it comes to planning, though, because the chapel doors do not open until your allotted time slot. Also, you're freaking out about getting photos done in time and having your guests leave the premises in time so as not to intrude on the next wedding - this didn't turn out to be a problem as people naturally left in time, but was stressful to think about when trying to plan and organize. Also, if for some reason, you need to shuttle your guests over kind of early, or if it's raining and not your time slot yet, your guests are basically waiting outside. You can totally work around the inflexible terms of the university if you're aware of them beforehand (i.e. read the contract), so I don't think it's a huge deal, but I do agree that it does make things kind of annoying and adds on additional stress that one does not need when planning the wedding. Back to my comment about the organ - because it's a university building, the university requires that you use its university organist (at a very reasonable rate - especially for the caliber of these organists) if you decide you want someone to play the organ. The university organist also happens to be professor of organ at the university. He was unable to play our gig, but had another doctoral candidate play, and the music was AWESOME. Most other ceremony musicians will make you pay extra for them to learn more difficult music (i.e. music outside of the typical wedding repertoire), but I picked out some nontraditional pieces, some of which I consider pretty difficult to play, and the organist was happy to play it without any complaints, and played it beautifully. So, that's another perk for Kirkpatrick - very cool organ (for a chapel), and excellent pro organist to play your ceremony music (should you decide to have an organist instead of strings or something). The music I picked made for a very dramatic processional (thanks to the great organist), and all the guests loved the ceremony. As annoying as the university is about use of the chapel, I think it's a beautiful spot for a wedding, and you get to have some pretty cool organ music, if you choose to. :)

We picked this place because of Rutgers and the historic chapel. Quality of service was pretty laid back and we encountered two negatives. The first was that the Chapel was not opened on time and we had to wait 30 minutes for the student assistant to arrive and open the doors. The second was their sound system. The microphone system was hard to hear for our guests.

The inside and out are absolutely stunning. The floor inside is linoleum but we covered that with an aisle runner. Overall, I would give Kirkpatrick 5 out of 5 stars for the beauty of it. It looks amazing in our pictures! We had major issues with the sound system and apparent lack of concern by the staff about it. We and the couple who had a rehearsal before us could not play the CDs in the system there. The staff person on site was unhelpful and unapologetic - only offering that the "sound system is old." You only get 30 minutes to rehearse and after that they charge you extra. This is a problem when the music for your day is not being played AT ALL and you're unsure if it could work during the actual wedding. Our friends had to rig something with an iPod, speakers and a microphone in order to get our music to play. So, be prepared and maybe ask if you can try your music out even before the rehearsal day... it will save you a TON of stress.

Kirkpatrick chappel is not only a really beautiful historic chapel, but also had a lot of meaning for both of us. We were very satisfied with the chapel as well as the service that was provided to us. We were also extremely happy with the Rutgers Music Bureau for providing an exceptional mezzo-soprano. The chapel organist was also really great. We were very happy! Make sure you get a great photographer, as the chapel could be a bit dark, but if you have a good photographer like Millie, you're set!

We got married at Kirkpatrick Chapel at Rutgers University, and we completely regret it. The church itself was beautiful, but the person in charge of booking it, Patrick Cognan, is absolutely the worst person we've ever dealt with. He was unprofessional the entire process, unflexible, and completely rude. He embarrassed himself on my wedding day, and almost ruined the ceremony. Although the church is beautiful, DO NOT GET MARRIED HERE, unless Patrick isn't running the show anymore.
