You have to bring in all of your vendors at this location and you can only use catering from a pre-approved list (which are all great choices). I highly recommend using a wedding planner to help coordinate the logistics here. If you are a UCSD employee, you can get a discount on the venue price. They also have the option to hire a parking attendant, which I recommend as well- one hour of time was sufficient.

I found this venue a year before my engagement even happened not knowing we would be selecting this spot as our wedding venue! We are going to be married at the end of 2016 and can't wait to show this hidden gem to all of our special friends and family who will be in attendance. The staff has been so helpful and accommodating to our needs and we look forward to working with all of the vendors we're bringing in. It's a great shell to design the exact wedding/ ceremony you had in mind!

This place is a tucked away treasure of La Jolla. We booked this venue because of it's beauty and ocean view - plus, the rental price of $2500 could not be beat! We also like the intimacy of the venue and had both the wedding and reception there.

We didn't have many issues during our planning process but when we toured the place before booking, we were greeted by a staff member that was not friendly, didn't smile, and had a weak hand shake. This was off-putting. Frankly put - this person is responsible for selling the space. How can you not even smile? On our rehearsal date, she was annoyed and had attitude when my wedding planner had questions. I still don't understand how she works there. Regarding the other staff, they were professional and will respond to you within 1 or 2 business days.

The Martin Johnson also has a weird parking set-up. They give you 50 spaces included but you can purchase extra if needed. On the day-of you are required to have a parking attendant to pass out parking passes. Luckily we had my brother's friend there to pass them out...otherwise, you are required to hire someone from the Martin Johnson at $50/hr as people arrive.

Lastly, there is the little house that's on the property...but this is more along the lines of their rules/guidelines. We provided our own inventory for an open bar, had our own arch (for flowers), and other decor for the wedding day. We contacted the manager to ask if we could bring these things with us on our rehearsal date (day before the wedding), and leave them in the house overnight. We were told no. SO the morning of my wedding, my husband and his groomsmen busted their asses to get everything to the venue before the wedding started. We paid for this venue but didn't really have full use of the amenities. It was a simple request that they would not accommodate. >=(

Regardless, I would choose this place again and again! It's very affordable and SO beautiful. ♥

My daughter's wedding and ceremony was held at the Martin Johnson House on 9/15/12. It is such a beautiful location. All our guests were asking 'How did you find this place'? It made me feel good to be in the know, but it really shouldn't be kept a secret. It is a great wedding location. It is so beautiful, one doesn't need to spend a lot on decorations and even flowers can be simple.
Matthew Anderson was the venue administrator who worked with me. He made everything so easy. He recommended the best vendors - The French Gourmet was the caterer - they did an awesome job and supplied everything we needed. Matt recommended Bob Hoffman for photography and videography - see my rave review about them. Bob's team was awesome.
Matt took care of getting the parking permits for me, making that easy too.
He is very responsive and answered endless questions with such kindness. He never sounded tired of me and I had lots of questions!
The vendors really know how to 'work' the Martin Johnson House so the ceremony and reception ran smoothly and the sunset views are awesome.

The Martin Johnson House is the perfect wedding location in La Jolla. In the beautiful setting of a secluded ocean cliff on the Scripps Campus of UCSD. There is a huge deck for dancing or tables and a lower deck, where we held our ceremony. There is enough inside space to accomodate 100 guests and tables and chairs are included in the rental. Additional supplied can be rented from UCSD. Be sure to clean up well, we lost our deposit.
