Your new life journey begins at Mississippi Dunes with a perfect setting for an incomparable wedding. The outdoor ceremony site sits nestled on the bank of the Mississippi, just feet from the water. The menu is lovingly overseen and directed by our Executive Chef, David Shelton. Chef David comes to Mississippi Dunes with more than twenty years’ experience from all over the world. Let me start this review by saying that if it were not for the newest set of coordinators, Nate & Linda, this review would not be five stars, but because of them, it is! This review starts rough but has a happy ending so bear with me!
My husband and I were married here on 5/28/2016. We started planning at the beginning of 2015 and were put through the absolute ringer and left stressed beyond belief. We went through 4 different wedding coordinators in that time span and each time a new one came in suddenly the rules changed too. It was an absolute headache and if I would not have been so detail oriented in my planning and counting on the venue itself for very little, our day would have been a disaster. I had no confidence in the people who were supposed to be pulling my wedding together from the venue side. It was miserable.
The week of my wedding, I received a call from a very eccentric man named Nate who called himself the "details" guy which ended up being the best possible thing that could have happened to us during our entire time planning with the Dunes! Nate & his wife Linda were AMAZING to work with! Nate was always on top of getting ahold of me to keep me updated on what was going on and check to see if there was anything I needed. If it were not for the two of them and the staff they had on our wedding night, it would not have been the perfect wedding that it was! These two honestly swooped in and saved the day! I am beyond grateful to them for being so attentive, helpful, detail oriented, accommodating and cheerful! They went above and beyond what they had to in order to make sure my dream wedding went off without any issues and I can confidently say, IT WAS PERFECT thanks to them! With Nate & Linda in charge, I would recommend this venue to anyone! With the two of them, you are in excellent hands and your day will be just as perfect as ours was!

Penny at Mississippi Dunes was a pleasure to work with. She seemed genuinely interested in making our party wonderful. Some questions I asked went unanswered or took a while to hear a response. Some of the staff during our party weren't quite as welcoming as Penny, which is unfortunate because the guests at our party only interact with staff.

We are very happy to hear Penny, our Event and Wedding Coordinator, was a pleasure to work with. We work hard with all our staff to emphasize the importance of excellent care and will continue to do so.

Event space was beautiful, staff were friendly. The day of the wedding there was miscommunication with food that should have been avoided as I sent all necessary info in advance. This was very disappointing as we were assured everything would be timely. The dunes went through 3 coordinators while we were preparing for our wedding all were horrible except the last who was very helpful and attentive, it would have been lovely if we had Penny the whole time. Like I said all went well and the staff were so helpful except for a mix up during dinner which was frustrating.

Thank you for taking the time to review Mississippi Dunes! We take your feedback very seriously. We're pleased to hear our Coordinator did an excellent job for you. She and our Head Chef are putting that same focus and attention on set up and banquet staff training for next year's weddings. We're very excited about our team for the 2016 wedding season. Thank you, again, and our best wishes to you and your family.

Let's start off by saying that the venue is GORGEOUS!!!!!! How can you not love endless views of the Mississippi River with the fall colors surrounding you. The outdoor ceremony site is just unreal since you are standing feet away from the Mississippi River. There is a bridge that you have to go under just before the entrance of the golf course and it is only has 10 foot 4 inch? clearance which both our party bus and hotel shuttle could not fit under. It took our bus and shuttle 25 minutes to get from the hotel to the venue which would only take 8 minutes if you could go under the bridge. The food was good and we heard good things about the salmon, JD Chicken, and JDSirloin. We were set up with a private food tasting and the portions we were served at the wedding were A LOT smaller than what we were shown at the food tasting. I was hesitant to sign a contract at this site because of its horrible reviews. I started working with a lady that promised me a lot of things and so it was put in the contract. Everything seemed to be going fine and then I would not hear back to phone calls or texts. She took a emergency leave 3 weeks before my wedding. I had to meet with the new lady, Penny, and completely redo all the wedding plans I had made with the previous lady. She honored all the extras I put in the contract and was very organized. She was very quick to respond to emails. I was very organized and detailed and Penny took all my small details I requested into consideration. She even sat with me for a half hour trying to get a slide show to work earlier in the wedding week. She had the room set up early for me so it made my wedding day less stressful. Also, if you plan on having a slideshow that uses those cool wedding picture apps, make sure you bring in a hot spot. Their internet did not work at all! Ultimately, I liked having my wedding at this site. I had a lot of frustrating moments working with the changing staff but think Penny will do a good job moving forward!!

Under the new management, everything went much much more smoothly. We did not realize how much they would do for our decor until the day of. The food was very good. Service was alittle slow but no one complained. Portions were big.

I gave a 3 star to the responsiveness because they had gone through several different event coordinators before we got Penny. The communication was not satisfactory until then. Penny came in and saved the day big time and is a true professional with a great attitude and treats your day as important as you do.

I would give this venue a 0 if I could. Everything seemed seemed be running okay. The wedding organizer and I had everything written down and perfect when she had to take a sudden leave of absence. The woman that replaced her was absolutely lost as to what was going on (4 days before my wedding and mean while studying for my nursing boards). I had to go through a year and a half worth of information to a woman in 30 minutes. She sent me confirmation on everything and it seemed to be okay. I showed up the morning of my wedding and the entire set up was completely wrong. Wrong table cloths, wrong napkins, wrong placement of the buffet and others. It took me 30 minutes just to find someone (the replacement wedding coordinator doesn't work weekends.... WTF?!?!)!!! Setting up for my family and I was even WORSE. NOBODY helped out! Grounds crew refused to help out, the owners said that no employees were there to help set up, its not their job. My dad had to pay someone 50$ for someone to help with the ceremony area. The day itself was a spotty rainy one. We had to hound someone to wipe off the seats at the ceremony area. Those to came down to wipe the seats handed rags to THE GROOM and told him to finish wiping the seats!! I DON'T THINK SO!!!

Come closer to the ceremony its self, nobody was there to help bring guests down on golf carts (WHICH WAS PLANNED OUT AHEAD OF TIME). My FATHER had to go and yell at people to get out there 10 minutes before the start of the ceremony. The owner yelled at and made my sister-in-law cry DURING THE CEREMONY!!!
I’d go on but there’s a limit on characters…. DO NOT GO HERE!! BRIDE TO BRIDE.

Mississippi Dunes Golf Links responded with the following comments:

Dear Kaylee,
We are so sorry your wedding day was not the experience you hoped for. It is true we had sudden and unexpected turnover with our coordinator just prior to your wedding. The coordinator you originally worked with had a family situation which required her immediate focus and attention. Our new coordinator stepped into a less than ideal situation and hit the ground running with minimal information for the weddings immediately on the calendar - including yours.

Of course none of that is your problem or your fault and we are terribly sorry you were not 100% satisfied. Our goal is only happy surprises and memories for your wedding day.

Here at Mississippi Dunes we work continuously to improve our service and our offerings in order to provide a beautiful day for wedding couples and their families. Our new events and wedding coordinator is professional, dependable, and goes above and beyond for our couples. Our chef is dreaming up new delights to add to the 2016 menu and our banquet staff is constantly training for better service.

I got married 8/15/15. First off, a year a half ago the event coordinator was Jeff. Booked and paid our down payment with him. Then over the winter I was not able to get a hold of anyone. Finally this past spring I get a hold of Sheila, the new coordinator. She said she didn't have my number on file or she would have reached out to me. Anytime I had questions, it took multiple emails and calls to get a phone call back from her. Fast forward to 2 weeks before the wedding day. Unable to reach Sheila, once again trying to nail down the details for my wedding. Menus needed planned, vendors needed questions answered, none of which was handled by the event coordinator without multiple calls or emails. So we finally sat down a week before the wedding to discuss final details. All of which Sheila wrote down, but many were not executed. Firstly there was suppose to be food/lunch in the rooms for the wedding party at noon. By 2pm everyone was exhausted, there was no food, and my mom had to track down staff. The kitchen staff was pissed because they were not informed of the meals that were suppose to be there at noon. We also discussed house salads with ranch and balsamic for dressing options. caesar salads were served instead. Sheila said we never discussed house salads which my mother and I both requested. We discussed having a signature drink. The drink was also not at the reception. My parents paid for an open bar, which the event management said for 150 guests would last until midnight, well the miscalculated because it was a cash bar by 10pm. In addition, we planned our rehearsal for noon the day before the wedding. No one was there. The owners hadn't a clue we were suppose to be there and the event manager Sheila was no where to be found. Overall, if you think the $10,000 includes good communication, event management and coordination, you are wrong. Be prepared to deal with it on your own. My experience was even more stressful than it should have been.

This is a difficult review to write. Mississippi Dunes is a truly beautiful venue! Our wedding and reception were both held at MD and turned out beautifully. That said, I will add that the owners take off for warmer climates for 6 months out of the year. I have no problem with that - however, they do not empower their staff to make needed decisions in their absence. For example, the sheetrock in the interior space has been cracking and pulling loose from the ceiling for 9 months. It was brought to their attention by us and many others numerous times. But no one, including the General Manager, had the authority to make needed repairs. The pergola at the outdoor venue space is unstable and the white chairs have tears all over the padded seats. The staff seems to be constantly turning over, therefore, no one is expert at anything. There is not enough staff to handle the needs, so we enlisted the help of many friends to cover the details. Our meal was very good - thank you to the chef. My review is mixed because I was ultimately very pleased with our wedding and reception, but extremely frustrated with the owners to be letting this gem of a venue fall into this state of disrepair. Sheila, I truly thank you for your efforts. You and Vicki were great to work with. Staffing is a big problem - the event coordinator should not have to be acting as wait staff. She should be supervising and directing the event staff. I don't view this as your issue, but rather that of owners who are neglecting their business. My bottom line is that I would say Mississippi Dunes is a great place to have a wedding providing you can cover many of your own details.
