My name is Peter Naughton and I'd love to be your wedding day DJ. By now, you've probably read plenty of articles giving advice about wedding planning... including the fact that the DJ can "make or break" your reception.

With more than a decade of experience as a professional broadcaster and event DJ, I offer my customers the confidence that their reception will be incredible. When you hire me, you get not only a DJ, but also a master of ceremonies. I'll make any and all necessary announcements throughout the evening (but I won't talk just to talk), I'll make sure you and your wedding party members are in the right places at the right times, and I'll cooperate with your photographer and caterer to make sure everyone's in-sync and everything's happening at the times you're expecting them to happen.

But you won't be overpaying for that experience -- having been married myself in 2011, I know how quickly wedding day expenses can add up. That's why I keep my rates well below DJs who offer comparable experience and services.

Check out the rest of my page here, and feel free to visit my full website at www.peterthedj.com for more details including current pricing, specials and to inquire about date availability. To ensure a high-quality performance for each client, I book just ONE event per date... so reserve your date before someone else does!

You can also rest assured that I am insured for all events I perform. Thankfully, I've never needed to make use of my liability insurance, but you should never take a risk by hiring a DJ who isn't insured. The few bucks you might save today could wind up costing you a lot more on your wedding day. Even if you don't hire me, be sure to ask any other DJ you're considering if they carry a DJ liability insurance policy. Read less

What music genres are in your collection?
50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, Acoustic, Big Band, Classic Rock, Classical, Country, Dance, Folk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Motown, Oldies, Orchestra, Pop, R&B, Rock, Soul, Swing
Do you have liability insurance?
Describe your DJ style:
My DJ career started with several years on-air at a radio station where we constantly promised more music and less talk. I've found that approach works very well with weddings.
While I usually double as the emcee -- introducing the wedding party and making other necessary announcements throughout the event -- I only talk when I "need" to. After all, you and your guests are there to enjoy yourselves and the music, not to listen to a DJ making useless comments after every other song.
Is there a limit to the amount of music that can be requested?
No limits! You can request as few or as many songs as you like. The only limit is the amount of time available during your event.
What is your usual attire?
My usual wedding attire is a black tuxedo with a white shirt, black vest, black tie. However, if the men of the wedding party will not be in tuxes, it could be awkward if I "outdress" them, so at your request, I can wear a regular suit, or a "business casual" outfit.
If you do not have one of the songs pre-requested by the client, do you require that they provide it?
This doesn't happen often, but when it does, I purchase my own copy.
How many other DJs do you work with?
None. When you book with me, you get me. I personally handle every step of the process, from responding to your initial inquiry and the planning stages, right through packing up every last piece of equipment after the reception is over.
The only exception was the one wedding I had to miss because I was in the hospital with my wife as we prepared to welcome our son into the world. But since we knew that was going to be a possibility well in advance, I worked very closely with a trusted colleague (who usually DJs his own events) who would be on "standby" to take over if needed. And when it turned out he would be needed, he was able to step in and handle the event seamlessly.
What is the minimum amount of time you will DJ for?
4 hours. If your event is shorter, you can still book me, but the 4-hour rate is my minimum rate.
Is the client able to meet the DJ before booking?
Yes, definitely. My rates include up to two face-to-face meetings at no additional charge. If you live outside of the area or there's any other reason meeting in-person would not be feasible, we can schedule a "virtual" meeting on the phone or via Skype.
The first meeting is usually held as early as possible. I offer this first meeting as a "no obligation freebie," for a chance for couples who might have more questions about my services, before making any firm decisions. Conversely, I also use the first meeting to explain my general style and offer you some options and choices to consider for your reception.
The second meeting is generally held a few weeks before the wedding. By now, couples have all (or nearly all) of their plans finalized, so this meeting serves as a chance for us to review everything together and make sure we're all on the same wavelength.
In addition to the planning meetings, there is unlimited support via email.
Can the client submit a do-not-play list?
Definitely! The "do-not-play" list is just as important as the "must have" list.
Do you bring your own equipment?
Yes, I bring my own equipment.
What (if any) special equipment, such as disco balls or lighting, is offered with your service?
I have a complete set of dance floor lighting, included at no extra charge.
How much time do you usually need to set up? Do you require that the site or client provide a table for you to set up on?
At most venues, set-up can be complete in about 60-90 minutes, especially when it's a very short distance to move gear from my vehicle to the dance floor and my vehicle can be parked relatively close-by after everything's unloaded. I have a heavy-duty utility cart which can move the entire set-up in just 3 trips. However, if the load-in will involve elevators, stairs, long walks or other time-consuming obstacles, I may need more than 90 minutes.
If the venue has significant obstacles and/or if the venue will not allow me to begin my set-up early enough (ie. venues that book an "early" reception and a "late" reception on the same day, with just an hour in between), I may need to arrive earlier and/or bring a helper, which could incur an additional cost.
Table can be done either way: I do have my own 4-foot table with a plain black tablecloth, and I always bring it, "just in case." However, most reception halls provide their own table for the DJ, with their own linens to match the other tables in the room.
Do you have any extra space requirements?
My space requirements are fairly minimal. My dance floor lights are erected on an 8-foot-wide metal truss, which I usually set-up directly overhead at the DJ table... so the lights only require a little bit of floor space, for the supports that hold up either end of the truss, at either end of the DJ table. My speakers also sit on two stands. In some venues, I set-them up right next to the lighting truss stands. If we've got a little more space to work with, I'll spread the speakers out a little farther apart.
Most venues include the DJ table in their floor plans, so even if you're planning a guest list that's going to hit the maximum capacity for the room, you won't have to worry about my gear getting in anyone's way. It's big enough to provide the music and lights you need to party, but not so big that it's going to cost you any tables or seats.
Do you have a sign or banner that you use at events?
For weddings and other paid events, I do *NOT* use any signs or banners. You don't need to see that in the background of half the shots when your professional wedding photos are delivered. I do put some business cards on my table, but these are very small and wouldn't be visible in photos unless you were going out of your way to spot them.
However, I do usually place a sign on my table when I am doing free events (for fundraisers, non-profits and such).
Do you usually emcee the event or talk between songs?
Yes, I usually emcee the event. This includes formal introductions of the wedding party as they enter the reception. I'll also announce the "special dances" (like the newlyweds' first dance) and events like the cake cutting, bouquet toss, and so forth.
Other than requested announcements, I generally don't talk just for the sake of talking. You and your guests are there to party and have fun, not to listen to the DJ "chit chat" after every song. When I do speak, there's usually a reason for it (for example, alerting guests that the bouquet toss is coming up after this next song, or last call before the open bar changes over to a cash bar).
How would you motivate the crowd if no one is dancing?
Every crowd is different, and it's my job to "read" the crowd and figure out what they like. If one genre isn't working so well, I'll try to find another that does. Although I build a custom playlist prior to every event, I almost always change things on-the-fly to accommodate guest requests and to match the crowd response.
What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
Breaks are taken only when absolutely necessary (read: when nature calls). Because I use a computer playout system (as opposed to CDs), the music can continue on its own if I am away for a few minutes. However, I prefer to maintain an active presence at the DJ table as much as possible.
Providing a meal is not required, but it is certainly most appreciated. If you choose not to include your vendors in dinner, all I ask is to be notified in advance so I can plan accordingly.
Will you arrange for recorded music to play during your breaks?
Yes. As stated previously, my equipment allows me to "stack up" songs in advance, so the music will continue while I'm eating dinner.
What is your backup plan in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?
I know several other DJ's whose experience is similar to mine. If an unexpected, unavoidable emergency prevents me from working, I will do everything I can to get one of these guys to take over. If that is not possible, I will refund all money paid to date, including deposit.
Do you book yourself for more than one event in a day?
No. When you book me, you're the only event for that date... and in fact, for that entire weekend. This allows me to devote all of my focus and energy that day exclusively to your event. This also means, if your schedule changes -- say things move up an hour earlier, or you decide to push it all back an hour later -- you'll know that I will be available to "slide" my times to coordinate with your plans.
What is your overtime rate?
Overtime is $75 per half-hour if I am asked to continue playing beyond the contracted ending time. Overtime must be paid in full before it begins and is non-refundable, even if it ends before the half-hour. You should be sure overtime is also OK with your venue -- they may have their own extra charges, or they may not allow overtime at all.
Do you charge for travel expenses? If yes, how much do you charge?
Travel time up to one-hour from my home in Fayetteville (just east of Syracuse) is included at no charge. This includes everything in Syracuse, Oswego, Utica, Rome, and Cortland.
If your venue is just a few minutes over an hour from my house, I won't charge extra. But if your location is *significantly* beyond an hour, there will be an extra charge in consideration of my time, fuel, and vehicle mileage. Obviously, the exact fee will depend on the location, but the exact amount would be provided up-front, as part of your initial price quote. Quotes are good for 30 days, and if a contract is signed during that time, the price is locked-in permanently.
What is the required deposit to secure your services?
A deposit of $200 will lock-in your event date. Once your date is locked-in, any other couple inquiring about any other date that same weekend will be turned away; as a result, deposits are non-refundable.
The deposit will be applied toward your total cost. The remaining balance is due three business days prior to your event.

Peter was wonderful to work with - very quick getting back to us with any questions, very flexible and open to our ideas, and friendly and professional in all of our interactions. Planning was particularly impressive, his materials that helped prepped us for the wedding and his responsibly helped to shape how our reception went. I felt very at ease with the reception because Peter had such a thorough understanding of how the night would go. It was a wonderful experience working with him and I would highly recommend him to anyone!

Amy, thanks for the wonderful review! And for posting so quickly -- the day after the wedding is a new record for me... love it! I'm so glad you were pleased with my services, and I'm also glad you finally gave me a reason to visit Highland Forest -- a great place and I hope to visit again soon, either for another wedding or for the bike trails. All my best to you and Joel! I took plenty of photos and I'll hopefully have a chance to review them and share on my blog soon.
Peter did an awesome job as our wedding DJ!! We could not have been happier with our reception. The music selection was one of the most important parts of the wedding for me, and Peter was extremely flexible and met with us on multiple occasions to make sure that everything would be perfect and exactly the way we wanted it. He had no limit to the amount of songs that we were able to request and was able to play special acoustic versions of songs that we had found on youtube for our first dances. He was very prompt and responsive when emailing back and forth, and was always easy to reach. I would absolutely recommend his services, our reception was a huge hit and Peter was very friendly and professional.

Peter was a great DJ! He is so accommodating and really listens to what the bride and groom want. We shopped around a lot for DJs trying to find the right price and right person and when we talked with him, we liked that he was very professional and very affordable. He got the guests up there dancing and made sure the whole night went smoothly! We couldn't have asked for a better night or better DJ!!

Peter was great to work with. He was very professional and accommodating throughout the process. We live on the West Coast, and it was easy working with Peter, despite only meeting once face-to-face before the wedding day. We had him DJ our ceremony as well, and Peter did a great job.

Peter is an amazing DJ. He was always polite in every appointment, he even called to let us know he was running two minutes late which was very appreciated. He made up a whole schedule and worked with us to make sure our wedding was how we wanted it to be. There were no dead moments on the dance floor and he played every song we wanted him to play, we even had a Limbo and he had all the music available right on the spot. I would recommend Peter to anyone and you can't beat his price, he is a great addition to any wedding at a price that wont break the bank.

Peter Naughton was fantastic! My husband and I were living in Virginia when we started to plan our wedding so we never got to set up a face to face meeting but Peter always made himself available to talk on the phone, or e-mail or skype. My husband had chosen a non-traditional processional song for our entrance and we had a decent size bridal party and a very long walk! Peter was able to loop the song multiple times to ensure the song was long enough without flaw! It was perfect and beautiful. He was so accommodating with our entrance into the ceremony as well! We wanted our bridal party to each come into their own song. Peter is knowledgeable, professional, and easy to talk and work with and is very organized. He gave us options and brought up questions that we would have never thought of! We most definitely recommend Peter Naughton!!

Peter was fantastic! I was looking for a pretty basic setup (no photobooth, etc.), and Peter was able to provide that for a great price. He was very quick to respond to emails. Our first meeting was via Skype (per our request), which was convenient. He provided us with documents to help us along with our planning. We completed a form the walked us through every aspect of the day and what we needed. It brought things to our attention we would not have thought of otherwise. After we provided the completed form to him, he condensed it into one convenient itinerary that spelled everything out. He was able to edit songs for content and time. He was even able to make a major song change just a couple days before the wedding. Our ceremony was outside on the patio of the venue, and the reception was inside. Peter had equipment set up outside to play music for the ceremony, and seamlessly transitioned to music inside the venue for cocktail hour. He played everything we requested at the right times, and nothing on our "banned" list. He accomodated guest requests. The dancefloor was amazing! There were very few times when there weren't at least a few people dancing, and most of the time MANY people were dancing. We ended up extending our time with him at the end of the night because people didn't want the party to stop! Many of my favorite memories from that day involve watching everyone dancing and having a wonderful time. Peter was extremely professional and organized. We knew right after we met him that we could trust him, and it paid off. I would recommend him to anyone!

It's reviews like this that have helped me earn the "Wedding Wire Couples Choice" award... and it's also reviews like this that have helped other couples find me and fill my calendar for 2014. Recently Married
Peter was the DJ for our August wedding reception and we are so glad that he was! We planned our wedding from out of town and didn’t even get to meet Peter until a few weeks before our wedding, but the long-distance wasn’t an issue at all as Peter worked with us to schedule phone calls and was always quick to answer emails. This flexibility and responsiveness was key for keeping stress levels low! The planning process also went very smoothly because of how organized Peter was. He had a lot of helpful resources that he shared with us, such as ideas for songs, and he also had a planning worksheet that covered day-of details and timing of reception events.

At our reception, Peter brought the exact right amount of enthusiasm to his announcements, he had a very professional and unobtrusive setup, and most importantly, the music was great! Although we only provided general guidelines as to the type of music we wanted to hear, he totally got our style and what would keep our guests dancing. Everyone had a lot of fun and we got tons of compliments on the music selection.

We would absolutely recommend Peter. He is reliable, knowledgeable, affordable, and just all around wonderful to work with. You will be glad you hired him!

Josh & Annie
We got married this past August and were struggling to find a DJ that we could afford and that would give us what we wanted. We found Peter on Facebook and immediately we drawn to his services from the professionalism he displayed on his website and over the phone. Our interview with him was the final "yes" that we needed. The best thing that you get with Peter, besides the overwhelming price and value, is his professionalism and desire to give you what you want. He really showed that he knows what and who this day is truly about. Our reception, was not his show, it was what we needed and what we wanted and he made sure of it. He was fantastic at working with the venue staff to keep the night flowing behind the scenes and great at reading our dance floor to play the songs that we requested, keep the ones off that we didn't want and also throw in some that he knew the crowd would love. What a great night he gave us and such a pleasure to work with. We HIGHLY recommend Peter to anyone. Thank you Peter!

Peter was very flexible and willing to work with my ever-changing plans for the flow of the wedding day. When I paid him for an extra 1/2 hour that we didn't end up using, he refunded me for that half hour. Very much on the up and up! He is extremely professional and organized. He gave me great confidence that our music would be awesome, and it was! thanks Peter!

Peter was the best DJ ever! He accommodated all of our requests without hesitation. He was professional and organized. From our initial contact with DJ Peter, he was responsive and professional. Music has always been important in our lives and we wanted that to be a significant part of our wedding celebration. It was clear from the start that Peter was willing to work with us, discuss our needs, and cater his services to exactly what we wished. I was concerned with hiring a DJ because we did not want to include any "traditional" activities that DJ's often play a significant role in. We really wanted to cater our day to our needs… Do something unique. Peter listened, offered suggestions, and worked with us all along the way.

Every aspect of sound and music was perfect. The ceremony was timed beautifully. The music during the cocktail and dinner hours were wonderfully diverse, tasteful, and unobtrusive. Then the dance party began... and again, absolute perfection. Throughout the night Peter kept the energy high and there was never a moment the dance floor was not full. Peter's art at orchestrating the night was exactly what we had hoped for!

Without hesitation, we would recommend DJ Peter to anyone who is looking for that extra something to make their wedding or event perfect.

Peter was a pleasure to work with and helped make our wedding a day we would never forget! Here are the things we liked about Peter the DJ:

- Very experienced! He makes sure everything is taken care of before the big day so all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
- Peter played the right music to keep people on the dance floor for the entire day. I was impressed!
- He provides extensive lists of song ideas for each part of the wedding, but is able to find almost any song you could ever want.
- Very high energy! Exactly what we asked for!
- Very flexible! For example, Peter usually wears a tux for events, but we were having a casual wedding so he dressed down to fit in better.

I would recommend Peter to anyone. We were so pleased to have him as our DJ.

Peter Naughton hit every item on our checklist:

He was extremely affordable. For a wedding of only 50 people, we weren't looking to throw a big blow-out that cost us years of savings. Peter Naughton Productions fit perfectly into our budget.

He was professional. Upon initially putting out an ad to find a DJ for my wedding, I had quite a few of responses that raised eyebrows. Peter, however, always took the time to write complete e-mails with every detail necessary, he was always prompt in communication, and was extremely thorough in the entire planning processes.

He had the high energy and the experience to make the reception perfect. Everything flowed perfectly from beginning to end, all the right songs were there, all of our guests enjoyed dancing along with us, and Peter worked perfectly with us on our secret mission to surprise our guests with our unusual first dance.

There was absolutely nothing missing from our experience working with Peter - HIGHLY recommend him to any couple for their wedding.

Peter went far above and beyond our expectations. He was organized, easy to get hold of and accommodated all of our requests. We couldn't have asked for a better DJ! Peter Naughton was professional, organized and very accomodating which made it so easy for us (which was a relief having a million other things to plan) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his services to anyone in need of entertainment for any occasion.

Peter was flexible and attentive to our needs. We basically hand selected almost every song for the wedding - some more obscure than others - and he found and played every one! Peter was also very professional, responding quickly to our emails and meeting with us in person to go over details as well. It is always nerve-racking deciding to work with vendors that you really know nothing about - but we absolutely made the right choice selecting Peter and would wholeheartedly recommend his services to other couples or people searching for a DJ for their event.
