I had my wedding reception at a portland park. While the Portland park staff is nice, and our reception went on without a hitch, they were very slow in responding to questions or concerns. They would tell me it would take two weeks to hear back, then I would not hear from them, and I would call, and my direct contact person would be out of the office for a week.

Then we did the same process three times! They required information from me, then they needed to talk to maintenance, and then I could get my permit. So I submitted my info, they talked to the maintenance people and siad it would take a few days to get my permit. Then I would hear nothing from them, so I would contact them. They said it would be a few more days, and they would tell me the exact same thing! Three times!!! Finally some one over there understood what was going on, but I was ready to pull my hair out.

However the site was beautiful, and the price was right. I am still waiting on my key deposite to be refunded to my card however :(

By definition, the Portland Parks and Rec system doesn't necessarily cater to the bride and groom. They are popular, and they know it. So if you want to book one of their parks for a summer wedding, you have to get in line (in 22 degree weather) at 2 am on the first working day of the calender year you would like your wedding so you can stand in line with all the other engaged couples and book your preferred venue. Makes sense, and was exciting in it's own way. Other than that, the value is amazing, and our venue was spectacular, beautiful, and clean. Could not have asked for more. My only other "eh" moment with them was when they had a mix up with the insurance policy we bought through the place they recommended. You would think they'd have their communication issues taken care of. . . We are also in the middle of tracking down our security deposit, which 1 month later has not been repaid to us.

We reserved a picnic site for our wedding and reception, and it turned out fine in the end. But it was a major, major hassle.

Some things you should know:
1. Your calls will never be answered and your voice mails will be returned rarely.
2. You have to wait until January 1 before the wedding to make a reservation. This is not ideal for people doing Save-the-Dates.
3. There's a lot of paperwork.
4. You straight-up can't have a keg, but it's hard to get that in straight-answer form. It doesn't matter who serves it or what insurance you have. You can have bottles with the right insurance and more paperwork.
5. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing at Parks & Rec. Someone told me I'd have a key to a building where I could store things the night before the wedding. Found out the day before the wedding that that was not the case, and I'd have to rent a U-Haul! Additionally, I almost had a heart attack when, after I'd sent in all my paperwork, three weeks before the wedding, Parks & Rec called to say they didn't have two things. I said I'd sent it, they looked a little harder, and whoops! they did have it.

The park was mostly beautiful (a brutally ugly chain-link fence went up a few months after we chose the location, and they'd festooned the entire fence with yellow warning tape the day of our wedding). Renting a picnic site for a few hundred dollars is certainly cheaper than most venues. But getting permission to use the park how we wanted was definitely the most stressful, unpleasant part of the entire wedding.

We were married in the Amphitheater in the Washington Park Rose Gardens. It was a beautiful spot with amazing views. Customer service at Portland Parks and Rec made it very easy to book and they answered any questions I had about the park. Would highly recommend having a wedding in the Amphitheater, or any of the parks in the Washington Park Rose Gardens...

Rented Mt. Tabor Park amphetheater. Really nice setting. Much permitting and insurance required to serve alcohol and have music, but worth it.
