Rev. James Conditt presided over my daughter's wedding. The ceremony itself was not bad although from the rehersal it became evident that he felt it was his show. He even had a "Script" (his words). I understand that it is normal for an officiant to read from a book of rituals or other printed text. The antidotes he related were not spontaneous or taylored to the couple as one might expect. These were part of a script we were told he uses regularly without revision. There were people in attendance who had seen him use the same script at other weddings.

I had been anxious about meeting him after several conversations with my daughter led me to believe I might not feel he was the right person for our event and would be unable to do anything as my daughter lives in another state and I would not meet him until the day of the wedding. My daughter had told me that he was continually trying to get them to do things they had decided against. He wanted her to hire an assistant, and for them to rent a limosine. He also pressured them to place an add in a local paper mentioning he was their officiant. After seeing his website on The Wedding Wire I now understand this. Weddings are a family business and this is his way of promoting that business. He did convince my daughter and her fiance to hire his son as their photographer. He even insisted they send an official wedding invitation inviting him and his wife to the ceremony and reception.

All seemed to go well at the ceremony but when we got to the reception we realized there was a problem. Reverend Condit was no where to be found, even though my daughter had requested he give the Blessing. She also realized she had money missing. It seems that when the reverend took the marriage license out of the envelope she had it in, he also took all the money she had put in there as well. Part of the money was intended for him but that gave him no right to take it. The correct thing to do would have been to wait for her to pay him. In addition the money to pay the photographer was no longer there. My new son in law approached the photographer about this and was told he knew nothing about it and did not know why his father had not come to the reception. The photographer called the reverend and then told us his father said the money he took was only the agreed upon amount they owed him and he did not know anything about any other money. In an effort not to mar the remainder of the reception we dropped the issue and returned to the guests after paying the photographer what he was owed.

We had a joyous evening despite these events but I want everyone to beware of this unprofessional behavior. I hope no other couple has an experience like this.

Where to begin? He was so scattered, my husband had JUST got of the phone with him to discuss details before the wedding and not 5 minutes later he called me and said he hadn't touched base with us and had no idea what was going on. My husband then called him back and he said he must have gotten his notes crossed. He said he would be attending the reception so we paid for the plate and then the day of the wedding he told my mother he would not be staying for dinner and would talk to us about it later but never mentioned a word to either one of us. He brought a "vanity" marriage license as one of the services he offered but it had the wrong state on it. His sermon was virtually "our story" as I wrote it on our wedding website but he didn't even copy it correctly and left out key phrases. He continued the entire service leaving out the part where my sister was supposed to sing so we had to tack it on to the end which was kind of awkward and threw everything off.
