Well karma is real. I hadn't seen Rod in years until I noticed him recently sitting in a park with a clan of homeless people. I had once worked for him at the pierpont and he was the biggest jerk to work for. Always demeaning his employees. Well what's going on now Rod? Homeless? I can't even feel bad with everything he's done to other people. But it goes to show you get what you deserve. Rod was always gay when I knew him, all the sudden he's straight when a rich woman is interested, and the second she leaves him he's gay again. Hm. Well I know how badly you wanted a life of luxury, and I can't help but laugh that you are now on the streets!

Unprofessional, bait-and-switch, unresponsive, failure to deliver, flaky, cheap, dramatic, passive aggressive, does not pay sub-contractors, and outright liar.

These are some of the words that describe Rod Houck Presents and the service we received. Check the complaints at the Better Business Bureau. Check bankruptcy court records. Call Rod Houck Presents' disconnected work phone. Check other reviews below.

(And beware of the positive reviews below, as they may have been written by those closely affiliated with Rod Houck Presents. Note the overly-specific detail of the positive reviews, and how they contrast with the multiple disasters described elsewhere.)

Working with Rod Houck Presents is simply not worth the hassle. Our wedding was a success only because of the hard work and vision of my wife. Mr. Houck stood my wife up on more than one occasion after she made long drives to Ventura to meet him at appointments he scheduled. Mr. Houck once called at 5AM. My wife ultimately had to make phone calls directly to new caterers and other sub-contractors after Mr. Houck dismissed them all 5 weeks before the wedding without telling us. The DJ and the caterer actually emailed us to tell us that Mr. Houck was no longer working with them.

We contracted Rod Houck of Rod Houck Presents for our March 20, 2010 wedding in Ventura. We paid him $10,000, and he was to sub-contract the caterer, photographer, cake, desserts, shuttle, etc.

Mr. Houck engaged in bait-and-switch activities, delivering goods that were not ordered, failed to deliver goods that were ordered, and still has not paid the wedding photographer.

Here is the list of formal complaints:

1) Mr. Houck was to contract a shuttle to bring attendees from the parking lot up the hill to the Rincon site for our wedding. (Keep in mind, Mr. Houck now resides on the site, unbeknownst to us when we booked the site.) Shuttles were to arrive at 1:30 to have attendees in place for the 2:00 wedding. No shuttles ever came. Exasperated and frustrated, guests finally drove up the hill, causing confusion and causing some guests to get lost and miss the wedding altogether. Meanwhile, I and the groomsmen took to our cell phones, and had to stand at the key intersections to direct guests in their cars to the remote venue. The wedding started over an hour late. A guest took a photograph of Mr. Houck in the back of a pickup at about 2:30 pm, while we were directing traffic. I later contacted the shuttle company, Blue Sky Shuttle based in Torrence, CA, and a representative named Cesar stated that they were only contacted at 11:30 AM the day of the wedding.

2) Mr. Houck was to contract Bread Basket Cake Co. in Camarillo, CA for the cake. We met with Bread Basket and chose a design and flavor for a three-tier cake. On the wedding day, the cake was different. One bridesmaid saw our cake in three-tiers sitting on the floor, but before the guests even arrived, the cake had been disassembled and not even the bride got to see the cake. The cake we cut was only one-tier instead of three, and the guests ate cake different from the cake we ordered. I contacted Bread Basket Cake Co. and they responded that while they had a record of us doing a cake tasting, no order for a cake was ever placed. Houck later said that he canceled the order with Bread Basket and got a different cake from someone else without telling us.

3) Mr. Houck was contracted to provide desserts, including "lemon bars (or tarts), strawberry-rhubarb pies (or little tarts), cheesecake bites, something chocolate (can be cupcakes or something else as long as it is rich and dark), cream puffs, cookies (whatever assortment she wants to do)". At the wedding, guests were offered carrot cupcakes and lemon bars.

4) Mr. Houck contracted an excellent and highly reputable photographer for our wedding. According to the contract, the photographer was to be paid by Mr. Houck. Thirty days after the wedding (April 20, 2010), Mr. Houck still had not paid the photographer, despite repeated promises to do so. As of May 4, 2010, his check to the photographer still has not cleared, meaning we still cannot see our wedding photographs.

5) The stemware used by guests said "Affinity Bank" on them.

6) The venue (a private home) had been vacated by the residents only the night before. There were packed boxes in the dressing areas.

7) Mr. Houck insisted the final payment be made the night before the wedding instead of at the wedding (as previously agreed upon).

8) Mr. Houck showed up an hour late to the rehearsal. Upon his late arrival, Mr. Houck was entirely unprofessional, embarrassed many of the guests, and misdirected the order of the processional.

9) After conducting tastings with our original caterer, cake provider, and DJ, Mr. Houck apparently fired them all. We only found about the dismissal 5 weeks before the wedding, and only when the fired DJ communicated to us that Mr. Houck was no longer using him. This caused us to have to go back and do new tastings with new caterer and cake provider. Additionally, (as stated above), the second cake provider did not provide the cake we ordered.

10) Mr. Houck referred to wedding guests standing in line for food as "these fucking people" within range of many of the guests, prompting complaints to the bride.

11) Mr. Houck invited another couple to our wedding in an attempt to sign them to a contract without our knowledge.

12) Mr. Houck arranged for a hair and makeup person to prepare the bridesmaids without informing the bride. He instructed the bridesmaids to arrive at the site for the hair and makeup earlier than planned so that his photos could be used for the promotion of Rod Houck Presents.

13) Mr. Houck sent members of the wedding processional out of order and to the wrong music during the wedding, most likely because he missed the majority of the wedding rehearsal.

14) During the 1-hour delay for the guests to arrive because of the missing shuttle, the sister of the bride interviewed several of the wait staff on camera. Several of them stated on camera that they were only contacted and asked to help the evening before and the day of the wedding.

Our experience with Rod Houck Presents was simply miserable. Rod Houck Presents is not worth the trouble. The Rincon property is indeed beautiful, if you can find it. Everything else is a hassle, and you simply don't know what you're going to get.

We still don't have our wedding photos. Mr. Houck promised us a final tally of the the invoices he claims to have spent, but has yet to provide it.

So, if you want to work hard for your wedding, and not get what you paid for, then use Rod Houck Presents. But if you want a professional, hassle-free wedding, I suggest using someone else. In fact, I would strongly encourage you to look elsewhere for a wedding consultant.

(And beware of the positive reviews, as they may have been written by those closely affiliated with Rod Houck Presents. In fact, I'm betting that this review will shortly be followed with a completely gratuitous, positive review in an attempt to balance this one.)

I shall be posting this review on various wedding review sites throughout the internet.

RIP OFF AND CON ARTIST!! BEWARE!!!!

We always dreamed of having our wedding in a beautiful garden and barn with trees, flowers and green grass. When we found Eucalyptus Lane, we thought we had found our dream. Not long after, we signed a contract with Rod Houck Presents to have our wedding at Eucalyptus lane. His assistant Jamie, had really talked up Rod Houck and the property telling us how Rod Houck had gotten the property not long ago and had really fixed it up. She went on about what a good guy he was with the integrity to do things right. Then, she insisted on a cash deposit of 50% of our total fee ($9,000.00). (no credit cards allowed). But she seemed so nice and sincere, and spoke so highly of Houck, we didn't hesitate. Not to mention we had found them through "Here comes the Guide" which we thought was trustworthy. Not long after paying the money -- Jamie, Rod Houck and the rest of his employees stopped answering the phone, then the phone was disconnected and Houck disappeared. Two months later, Jamie sent us an email saying she was quitting and there was no one who was taking her place. She was going on to work for someone else. (We think that was a lie because we think she still works for him). We wrote back to her trying to find out how to get a hold of Houck, but she wouldn't answer our emails. Then, a respected wedding vendor in the area told us we had better hurry and get a hold of Houck ourselves as he had a bad reputation amongst wedding professionals.

We finally found a personal acquaintance of Houck who gave us his cell phone number. When we called a surprised Houck, he informed us that he couldn't have our wedding at Eucalyptus Lane because he really didn't own the place, he was just renting it and his lease was going to expire before our reserved wedding date.
But, he said," I've got a place called The Oceanview Beach Club, which is really beautiful." We said we didn't want to have our wedding at the ocean, we wanted to have our wedding at a garden, to which he had no response. When we saw the Oceanview Beach club, it was just the top of a parking garage surrounded with plastic sheeting that had bird poop all over it. Not where I wanted to take my vows.
Needless to say, we were shocked by all this and of course asked for our deposit back. Houck then said "I'll speak with my attorney and see if I have to give it back or not."
We wrote him several letters threatening to sue him and he then started writing back very nice letters saying that he was going to pay us our money back next month, then next month, then next month.

The next letter we got (right before my wedding) was from the bankruptcy courts of Santa Barbara saying that he was filing for bankruptcy and was writing off our debt. When we went to bankruptcy court we found two other couples that he had done the same EXACT thing to - stealing around $30,000 dollars total from us altogether. And there were other people there that told us they heard that Houck had a gambling problem and had gotten into trouble.

When I spoke to his attorney he said that Houck had to file bankruptcy because he was starting another wedding venue business and he needed to have his debt wiped out in order to start his new wedding business... (imagine that...)

This con artist, Houck, really operated his business like a ponzi scheme, taking deposits from people, blowing it on his personal "items", then taking more money from people who had later weddings in order to pay for the earlier weddings whose money he had already inappropriately spent. Finally running out of money, he is using the lenient bankruptcy court system to get out of paying his debt. It's outrageous.

In the meantime, Houck himself and other books like "Here comes the guide" and other wedding places are still advertising both Eucalyptus lane (which he doesn't have) and the Ocean view beach club (with the bird poop and all). Why they would advertise for this rip off artist is beyond me.

One of the reasons we trusted Houck was because we found him in Here comes the guide. What a bait and switch!

We ended up having to spend twice the money we had planned on -- borrowing it in order to make up the money we lost. We not only lost the Houck money, but we also lost our deposits with our other wedding vendors when we had to change wedding plans.

It was a nightmare -- I cried everyday for the six months before my wedding.

Whatever you do, stay away from Rod Houck and all his associates. They are "nice" phoney con artists. Stay far far away.

My name is Sydney Graf and my parents own Eucalyptus Lane. I want to apologize for the horrific nightmare Rod put you through. My family has been living in Europe for the past 6 years and were unaware of all the terrible things going on. However, you are not the only ones who have had trouble with him. He was the worst renter we have ever had and put us through hell, he never pain his last few months of rent and then filed for bankruptcy so we will never see a dime. He owed my parents thousands of dollars. He also put MANY brides through hell... not just you guys. I am deeply grieved by this. A wedding day is supposed to be something beautiful and joyous and that was not what you experienced.

We are moving back to Eucalyptus Lane this summer (2011) and my mother will take her business back and try to restore her reputation. Everyone who has had their wedding at Eucalyptus Lane when my mom was in charge loved it. I am so sorry you didn't have that experience. Please accept my families apologies.

I loved Eucalyptus Lane and could not have asked for a more charming and beautiful venue. Our guests have been talking about it ever since....how magical it was! We had our ceremony under the trees on the back lawn, cocktails near the herb garden and our reception inside the barn. We also rented extra lounge furniture and fire pits from the contracted caterer (Command Performance) that enhanced the whole experience even more.

Jamie, the coordinator with Rod Houck Presents, was generally great. My only complaint is that she wasn't always quick to respond to emails and phone messages in the months leading up to the wedding. However, once our date came closer, it was much easier to get a hold of her. Our wedding day went off without a hitch and Jamie was flexible with all of our requests. That being said, I also had a Day of Coordinator that helped to set up all of my DIY items (placecards, menus, table numbers, etc.) so I never worried about that stuff at all. Also, Joe, our contact at Command Performance, handled almost all of our last minute issues with ease.

I'd highly recommend this venue to anyone, but I'd also recommend hiring a DOC to act as a liaison and to make sure you are taken care of when using Rod Houck Presents.

Eucalyptus Lane is a BEAUTIFUL place to get married. Our guest really enjoyed themselves & keep telling how how gorgeous our wedding was. The setting was perfect.

Jamie, the wedding consultant, was less than perfect...
Picture this: 1. You've just booked your wedding at Eucalyptus Lane (paid the deposit & all) & are promised a full 5 page "planning email" for you to get started -- to be sent to you within a couple hours -- anxiously you wait, for 10 WEEKS! while not being able to get a hold of Jamie through email or phone... but your hefty check has been cashed.
2. Your last consultation (1 week before the wedding) takes place at the barn -- and is interrupted by phone calls from an apparent more important bride..so you don't get anything accomplished at your meeting.
3. You show up,as planned,to meet Jamie at the barn the day before to drop off anything you need (champagne, flower vases, etc.).. and she doesn't show up!
4. You show to your reception, are waiting in the limo, guests are wondering around not knowing where to go, and Jamie & her assistant are busy warming their hands by the bbq for over a half hour.
5. Jamie is not seen or heard for the entire night -- meanwhile the itinerary she requested from me (that took a lot of work to get timing right & coordinate with the band & caterers) is not being implemented... and guests are becoming antsy about "when's dinner?", "when's the 1st dance?" -- and my question "Where's my wedding coordinator!?!"

Let me mention that the wedding consultant does not "come" with the venue... there is a hefty fee that you must pay for her services... money NOT well spent.

A few other things came up from the day we booked the venue to the day of our wedding (about 9 months). Some things that were told to us were "ok" to do (sparklers for the exit, colored linens as part of our package, extra staff as part of our package, set up & take down) -- were all changed. When this was brought up to Jamie she said "well prices have changed since you booked and you got lucky you didn't have to pay more". Apparently, Jamie overrides any & all contracts.

Your wedding will be GORGEOUS but make sure to hire an outside wedding coordinator to run things if you plan to choose Eucalyptus Lane!

Read less

BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Do not do business with Rod Houch. I agree with the unhappy bride. They have you sign a contract, pay half of the deposit and then when you need them, they are unavailable. Be careful. It's a shame because they are nice, just unorganized and very, very unprofessional. It's not worth it,its just not worth it.

Reading some of the other reviews, I laugh at the fact that some want something for nothing. I look at many venues before selecting Eucalyptus Lane and nothing compared! The venue, increadable. Just what we were looking for. The food fantastic. With regard to others views on the coordination and response to emails and phone contact, I was well informed of the hourly obligation Jaime the coordiator was to provide, and she gave over and beyond after her obligation to ensure everything was perfect. Her response time was a little slow with emails but I was provided with all the tools and see responded to messages I left in a timely manner. She kept me calm on my special day, and I couldn't have done it without her. I firmly believe we could have had more service but the cost of the venue was reasonable because they didn't gouge for additional staff and gave the option to hire additional coordination. Once again, She as on top of things and that's what I needed behind the scenes. If you want to have more, than pay for more!

The venue was absolutely gorgeous and the on-site coordinator, Jamie, was very professional and efficient. However, a couple of issues cropped up which we felt were not handled appropriately. 1) We were charged a $250 cleanup fee for rose petals which were scattered down the aisle for the ceremony. This is a bit excessive, and had we been told ahead of time that this would occur, we would have foregone the rose petals.
2) Our check covering our balance due was returned to us because the on-site coordinator emailed us an incomplete mailing address. We then had to pay a $30 rush fee to send out a replacement check. Nobody offered to cover this for us or to make amends in any way.
Overall, however, we were very happy with Eucalyptus Lane, and we are still getting comments about how lovely everything was a month after our wedding.

The first time I had the pleasure of hiring Rod Houck Presents was for my fathers 75th birthday 5 years ago. My father was very ill and we didn't know if he would actually make it to the actual celebration. Rod Houck not only was flexible with all the party arrangements but he was a strong and sympathetic shoulder to lean on. I couldn't spend much time "planning" the party or even think about it much. I told Rod what I wanted and HE DELIVERED. The party was a huge success and the memories are priceless of a beautiful day.

2 years later my daughter got married. My daughter had specific details regarding her wedding as most brides do. Rod gave my daughter exactly what she wanted and expected. The wedding was absolutely perfect! In fact the entire pre-wedding was perfect. The usual pre-wedding stress and anxiety was not an issue because Rod handled every detail and "change of mind" my daughter continued to have with a professionalism.

Rod Houck is a professional that KNOWS his business. He loves what he does and it truly shows in the details and care he provides.
Thank you Rod Houck! Now lets get started on my 60th!!!!
