About Sarah Pastrana PhotographyI am a photojournalist. I like to think that means I get paid to talk to strangers for a living. Originally from the South, I grew up with a mother who talks to everyone within hearing range in the grocery store line. I inherited her love of a good conversation. I believe there is enough power in one individual’s story to connect with our hearts and to bring change in a community. As a people person, much of my work revolves around the characters that breathe life into our communities. I love photographing weddings for the nuanced moments that would be forgotten if not for the pictures: the bride who jokingly caries a fern down the aisle during her rehearsal in lieu of a bouquet. The groomsman who wipes his sweaty forehead with an unsuspecting bridesmaid's sash.
I finished my graduate coursework in photojournalism at Ohio University in 2006 and am currently a staff photographer at Patuxent Publishing Company in Columbia, Maryland. My work has received national and regional recognition from the National Press Photographers Association, Hearst Journalism Awards, and Suburban Newspapers of America. I am available for local and destination weddings.
When I'm not exploring other people's lives, I spend mine searching for the perfect trail run and good red wines. I married the love of my life under Spanish moss cloaked oak trees on Jekyll Island, Georgia in October 2009.
