St. Francis Hall is truly one of DC's best hidden gems. We are a charming facility adjacent to the beautiful Franciscan Monastery in the quiet Brookland neighborhood of northeast Washington, DC (conveniently located near Catholic University).

Built in 1931 and featuring romantic Renaissance architecture, St. Francis Hall offers a rare combination of classic beauty and modern amenities. The Hall can accommodate 250 people for weddings, banquets and meetings on weekends and weekdays. Ample, free parking is available for all events - a rarity for city venues.

St. Francis Hall is an especially beautiful setting for weddings and other social events. The Hall's high ceilings, romantic lighting and elegant ballroom chairs help create a stunning atmosphere. The Monastery's beautiful gardens and grounds make an especially scenic backdrop for photographs.

The Hall offers very competitive rates and the rental fee includes tables and chairs. Clients may choose from a list of recommended caterers or bring in their own.

We hope you'll call or email for more information! Read less

My review is centered on the service I received related to an issue I had on my wedding day. This is not at all related to the actual venue. SFH is truly a hidden gem - it is beautiful, a great value and unlike any other venue in the DC area.

I used SFH for my reception. As part of your rental, you are able to use the lawn adjacent to the Hall. I planned to use it for my cocktail hour; however, when the caterer arrived to set up, they were informed that sod was put down on the lawn, and if it was used, we would be responsible for all damage. So, my caterer had to host the cocktail hour on the balcony/covered patio - an extremely tight fit for my 165 guests. The bar line was long, the servers could not make their rounds with food, and many guests could not get to the stationary hors d'oeuvres station because of the layout of the space. This also pushed back set up inside the Hall for dinner. Guests had to wait and the cocktail hour had to be extended 30 minutes to accommodate all the time it took to work through the issue.

My husband and I decided to give SFH a couple days to contact us about what happened and to offer a refund, but they never did. At my direction, my wedding planner sent an email to the coordinator (Cara), telling her what happened and asking for a conference call to settle the issue. That was met with some question as to why a conference call was needed, but apologizing for the snafu, taking full responsibility for it, but still not offering a remedy. When we spoke with Cara she reiterated her apology, and explained that she would go to her superiors with our request for a partial refund. We eventually came to a resolution, but we were very disappointed the Hall did not approach us first knowing they were in the wrong. Having integrity and being truthful in running a business is huge for me - I understand sometimes things happen. But, I do have a bad taste in my mouth as to how it was handled.

It's been said, SFH is a hidden gem. Considering it’s in DC, the rental fee is really reasonable and includes tables and chairs. The other pluses to this venue: You can lay it out however you’d like, bring in your own caterer and alcohol, there’s a TON of parking.

The venue is run by 2 part-time staff: Cara who runs the paperwork side from home & Pedro who is on-site for walk throughs and during events. When we first looked at the venue, we met Xhemil whom we heard great things about, but we never saw him again after that.

Given the part-time staff, we tried to work in advance of deadlines. Unfortunately, we still had a lot of problems with communication throughout the process leading up to and even after the wedding.

Cara and Pedro clearly do not communicate because she wasn’t aware that we had conducted our walk through 3 months before the wedding. She followed up and asked for paperwork and requirements that we’d already sent her. Though, I will say that Cara was always very nice and pleasant to work with.

For our walk through, Pedro was there, had no idea we were coming (after I'd told Cara), & wasn’t able to answer several of our questions that we had. On our wedding day, Katie (our wedding planner) later told us that it was really difficult to find Pedro, and, after they had, he’d told them he was going out for couple of hours so he wouldn’t be available. Several of the things he was supposed to do before the reception started wasn’t done – even things as simple as turning on the decorative lights.

We later had issues again with communication from the walk through. SFH has no paper trails for this such as a checklist, so when Cara and Katie told us there were no problems, we believed them. Three weeks after our wedding (and one after we'd gotten the clear from Cara), we were told there was damage and we had to pay for it. After a struggle, we got our full deposit back but processes clearly need to change here.

St. Francis Hall was the first place we visited, and I immediately teared up - it is such a beautiful space. The price cannot be beat for a venue in the city, and the staff were great to work with. We did find it helpful to hire a day of person to help run the show since the rental includes only the space and not a coordinator like some places, but was worth it. The venue has many open houses which make it very easy to visit when planning your event, and they are quick on email when you have questions. I recommend to anyone - it is a hidden gem, that will make any event incredibly special!

My experience with St. Francis Hall started out great. Cara and Xhemil were very responsive. As others have noted, Cara (office manager) only responds via email, but she's incredibly responsive so it wasn't an issue for me that I never actually spoke with her. Xhemil was the on-sight manager. He's the one that will show you around and explains the dos and don't to you and your vendors at the open house. He takes his job very seriously and was extremely helpful in giving me ideas of how to set up the room since I was using it for both the wedding and reception. They were both great to work with.

It's worth noting that you are required to follow a lot of rules and complete several forms to document the items you will need from the venue. If you need additional items (like tables and chairs) not previously requested, you could be charged an addtl $150 if someone has to go and get these items the day of your wedding. You also need to pay $400/hr for the rehearsal time for your wedding. Your contracted time is 8 hours which must be used as follows: 2 hour set-up; 5 hour event time only; and 1 hour clean-up. All that said, the place is gorgeous, needing little to no decoration and I immediately knew I wanted my wedding and reception there so it was worth it to me. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned on my wedding day.

My vendors weren't let in for about 20 minutes. Several of my vendors told me the place wasn't ready. The total # of requested tables and chairs weren't there. The blinds were open (which I requested to be closed - makes a big difference in the mood you're trying to set and your photos). The photographer had to come straight to me instead of setting up at the venue since she couldn't get in. Unfortunately, Xhemil wasn't working my wedding. If he had, I'm sure everything would have worked out as planned. Yes, I was a bit disappointed but my wedding was still beautiful. Would still recommend. Just make sure Xhemil is working that day :)

We had our wedding reception at St. Francis Hall at the end of November. It's a hidden gem in DC as far as venues are concerned. It really is a beautiful space. There are also wonderful gardens for photos. The catering kitchen is very convenient for your outside caterer. The hall has tables and chairs but other than that, you bring in all the vendors. They have strict open house hours and you can make an appt to view the hall. There is an onsite manager and a person who handles the paper-work and scheduling of your event. She is only reachable by email, don't bother calling! But, she is very responsive for someone who only works part-time for the hall. The onsite manager can come off as a bit gruff but he is very good at what he does and is just protective of the space. There is plenty of onsite parking, we chose to bus our guests from the cathedral downtown but there are enough parking spaces for guests. I would say that the only drawback is the location, it is in a neighborhood outside of Catholic University. So, it's not public transportation accessible. With all the giant windowless hotel ballrooms out there and the tiny-adorable but hugely expensive historic sites in DC, this is a wonderful happy medium. It has charm and is unique but it is affordable and it is a more flexible space. The hall is elegant and memorable.

Really gorgeous space, the photos aren't lying. The minute I spotted St Francis Hall I knew it was the right spot for us. LOVED the lighting, the size, the brick, the twinkly lights, and the fact that there was a disco ball (even though we forgot to turn it on!).

Huge plus that there was parking there too, and that we liked their approved vendors list, finding a really awesome priced caterer who knew the space well. The building tour time was a little annoying because it was only available for a walk through during the work day, but other than that no issues. OH - one issue, we asked in our paperwork for them to pull the blinds over the crosses in the window on the stage, and it wasn't done - we had a Jewish wedding so it was indeed a bit annoying to have that in the backdrop of all our photos (and of course we didn't notice it ourselves during the actual wedding).

St. Francis was perfect for my wedding. They are amazingly affordable for DC and are in a really great and beautiful location. I love that they had tons of parking and that you could take the metro if you wanted to. The venue itself is so so so beautiful. If you are looking for an amazing old world romantic type of venue, this place is for you. The on site manager, Xhemil, is great to work with. He was extremely helpful in all of our leading up to the wedding visits, and was very friendly. He even had ideas and pictures on how to decorate and set up. Cara is the person who handles all of the emails/contracts. She was great as well and very willing to answer any of my million questions. They are very protective of maintaining the venue, and so there are some things that are kind of not possible as far as decorating, but honestly, you really don't need it. We strung globe lights across the room and then had lots of candles and flowers and it was wonderfully romantic. They are protective of their place because its gorgeous and you can't fault them for that. We had our ceremony and reception there and it turned out perfectly. The gardens are just beautiful and gave us some really amazing photos. This place was one of the best parts of my wedding.

St. Francis Hall calls itself D.C.'s "hidden gem," and is absolutely right. It is stunning and the perfect place for a gorgeous reception. There isn't a bad place to take a photo anywhere in the place, and the high ceilings and windows are perfect if you are looking for something other than a cramped hotel banquet hall. The gardens outside are the perfect place for pictures, and the staff is absolutely fabulous. I planned my wedding from a distance (I was living out of state during most of the planning process) and Cara was wonderful about answering all my questions and working with me during the process. I definitely recommend St. Francis Hall to everyone looking for a unique reception venue in D.C. It's gorgeous. You won't regret it.

I loved my reception here! Cara & Xhemil (pronounces Jamie???) were so nice and helpful. I wasn't always the best about getting some of my forms on time to them, and they were very patient with me. It was a great deal (especially since we got married in January). The venue looked gorgeous with all the twinkle lights. We got married on a cold, bleak night in January, and didn't go into the gardens, but if you choose to get married in the warmer months, I'm sure that just adds to the beauty & price value of this place! I couldn't find another venue that looked as nice and classy that charges so little.

The hall was BEAUTIFUL - we hardly decorated it AT ALL. Gorgeous brick walls, wood floors, super high ceilings. It was really breathtaking, and an INCREDIBLE value (probably because it's not in the best area of DC). It was one of the biggest spaces we found, and it includes a large number of tables and chairs if you want to use them. The grounds of the adjacent monastery are stunning, as well.

The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because their staff works part-time, so there were some responsiveness issues and miscommunications that I found annoying. That's probably to be expected given the low (relative) cost. I think it was only $3500 or so for the winter (and a bit more in the more popular seasons).

We had our ceremony and reception here, and it was beautiful! Many guests commented on how unusual a space it was for DC, the gardens were gorgeous for photos, and the great architecture of the hall meant that we didn't have to spend a lot of money or time with additional decorations. It definitely does not feel like a cookie-cutter hotel reception site, but is warm and intimate. We absolutely loved having the ceremony and reception in one space, and the caterers were able to "flip" the space with ease for our 110 guests.

Cara and Xhemil were great to work with and offered recommendations for set up and other vendors. Our wedding was on a Friday, which worked out great - both a good value, AND we were able to have the rehearsal there on Thursday night (not possible if your wedding is on Saturday and another event is booked for Friday).

Our wedding was on a Friday, which worked out great - both a good value, AND we were able to have the rehearsal there on Thursday night (not possible if your wedding is on Saturday and another event is booked for Friday). St. Francis was the venue we were searching for but didn't know existed in the DC area! It is a beautiful space, and we are so happy that our wedding coordinator, Pavaune Pearson from Invited Events, showed it to us. Our guests reveled in how beautiful the space and gardens are. They also kept saying how they felt like they had been transported to Europe. It is a great intimate venue for a lovely wedding. We did have an issue of there being construction (mud all throughout the back lawn), which no one told us about until we did a walk through a week before the wedding. However, Pavaune worked with them and realizing how disappointed we were, they agreed to drape fabric to cover the construction (our ceremony was outside). Their lack of communication about construction was a horrible surprise, but everything worked out in the end. St. Francis is a beautiful space for any event.

Working with Cara and Xhemil at St. Francis Hall was a great experience. We loved the venue, and it was an amazing value! St. Francis Hall has a lot of open houses, which made it easy for us to do walkthroughs with our vendors. Xhemil was available on the wedding day to work with our various vendors during the set up, event, and the clean up. The venue itself is beautiful, and it worked very well for our ceremony, and also for the reception. I highly recommend this venue if you are looking for something unique for your wedding day.

I think this is one of the most beautiful places to get married in DC and at the same time one of the most affordable.

We didn't need to do much with the space because it's already beautiful. Our pictures in the garden turned out amazing even though it was raining. This is the perfect place for a DC wedding.

We are so glad we decided to get married at St. Francis Hall. We had a Hindu ceremony on the stage at the front of the hall (no, you don't need to be Catholic to get married here). We used the patio on the side of the building and the outdoor space in front of the hall for our cocktail hour, and then went back inside for dinner. The space is beautiful -- the pictures on their website should give you a good idea of what it looks like, but I highly suggest taking advantage of their "open house" hours and seeing it for yourself. The gardens on the monastery grounds are perfect for pictures before or after the ceremony. Everybody at St. Francis Hall was great to work with. Cara monitors the email address and was always quick to respond to questions. Xhemil is the on-site manager and was great to work with on the day-of the wedding. We met Xhemil at one of the open houses and asked him all sorts of questions -- he's a valuable resource that I highly recommend you take advantage of. The hall has a new audio system with excellent wireless microphones and an audio-input for your ipod/laptop if you want to play some background music. The rental rates for St. Francis Hall are very reasonable, especially if you opt to get married on a Friday. We received many comments from our guests about how beautiful the Hall was. We highly recommend St. Francis Hall for your wedding.

St. Francis Hall is truly a gem in the middle of DC. We were looking for an alternative to the standard hotel ballroom or very formal DC marble venue and this was perfect. It has a very old world feel with beautiful brick walls, arched windows, tall ceilings with wooden beams. From a practical standpoint, the free parking lot is very convenient for guests. The coordinators are all extremely friendly, professional, and aim to please with the set up. While many of our guests were locals, few had ever been to St. Francis Hall, and all were very impressed. I will say the location is a bit of a drawback, as it's not really Metro accessible, and you can't just walk outside to hail a cab, but we provided transportation, and many people drove, so it was simply another issue that could be resolved with proper planning. I highly recommend!

We used this venue only for our ceremony and photos, since we held our reception/banquet at a restaurant instead. St. Francis Hall is gorgeous, and I am thrilled to have held my wedding ceremony there. Xhemil was wonderful to work with! My only complaint is that my husband and I felt as though our main contact, Cara, was trying to nickle-and-dime us throughout the process. Although the venue is very flexible and more affordable than many sites in the city, we were only using the site for our ceremony and so already reaching beyond our budget to secure it for our off-season Sunday wedding in March (their rates are available on their website). There are hidden add-ons for chair rental, table rental, rehearsal time rental, and required liability insurance. We were able to offset most of these by taking care of them ourselves (for example, finding an alternate venue for the rehearsal), but be ready to consider these needs in your budget. Additionally, Cara was not very good at communicating with us, and the tone of her emails often came off as confrontational, preemptively defensive, and occasionally scolding. This was at least partly due to the fact that Cara was resistant to speaking on the phone, responding to our queries only by email -- but her demeanor really was a sour note in an otherwise great experience.

St. Francis Hall is a beautiful and unique location for a reception. My husband and I had our wedding photos taken out in the monastery gardens while our guests were enjoying a cocktail hour in the Hall, and the gardens are gorgeous and a great backdrop for wedding photos. The Hall itself is beautiful -- high ceilings, wood beams, and a beautiful wood floor and small white lights, and there was plenty of room for tables for eating as well as dance floor. Cara and Xhemil were wonderful to work with, and Xhemil was especially responsive and helpful as we were making final arrangements for use of the Hall. The Hall has also a sound system, tables, and chairs (and a disco ball) that you can arrange to use ahead of time -- the location is well set-up for big events. Our reception felt magical and St. Francis Hall was a big part of that. Thank you, Cara and Xhemil.

This venue is an amazing wedding reception site. When my fiance and I saw it we knew it was perfect for us! It is a great location in DC with free parking right across the street. Also the monastery next door provides a great place for beautiful wedding photos. My guests would not stop raving about the venue. Additionally, all of the staff is very professional and responsive. Another great aspect of this venue is that they allow you to obtain a liquor license and provide your own alcohol. Great way to save money. The only difficulty was coordinating how to get the liquor there since they wouldn't allow us to drop it off prior to two hours before the event.

We loved having our reception at the St. Francis all. Everyone was very helpful and accommodating! It is absolutely stunning and everyone loved it. We had an easy time communicating with Cara and Janice. We love that they added open house hours during some weekends as we were able to take advantage of this.

A big bonus is that we could bring in our own alcohol. It is a little tricky logistically, but we think it is still worth it.

We had our wedding reception at St. Francis Hall in DC and could not be happier. We worked with two people at SFH - Cara, who is the administrator, and Xhemil, who is the on-site manager. Cara was responsive, professional and thorough in her communications (primarily email). She always provided helpful answers to our questions. We were able to get the contract and all paperwork taken care without any problems.

Xhemil was phenomenal. We did not have a wedding planner, so I (the bride) did most of the legwork and made multiple trips to see SFH. Xhemil was always extremely courteous, helpful and responsive. He gave us great tips and advice on local catering vendors as well as ways to save money. He was also accommodating when we needed time to set up the day before our wedding. We could not have pulled off this wedding without his help.

The venue itself is classy and requires minimal decoration. Our guests loved the historic but warm feel to the hall. We got married on Oct. 29th during the freak snow storm, and with the indoor holiday lights, the wedding turned into a very warm, cozy winter wonderland holiday wedding.

To rent the venue on a Saturday night (as we did) is not inexpensive (4 grand), but given the location of the venue in DC, and the availability of a FREE parking lot with 50 cars right across from the reception hall, this was one of the better deals we found in DC. Also, you get access to the beautiful historic monastery located right across from the reception hall. Our friends and family loved the church and its history.

In sum, we would highly recommend SFH to anyone, and strongly recommend that any bride/groom get to know Xhemil well. He will be the best resource for you.

We loved St. Francis Hall! Cara and Xhemil were very responsive and helpful. The venue is absolutely gorgeous- we received so many compliments from our guests. The only negative thing I can say is that it wasn't super easy to coordinate dropping off items for the reception. I believe there was an event the night before so we could not get any access to the venue until 11:30am the day of the wedding, which was very close to my ceremony time. Otherwise, everything was perfect!

I decided on having my ceremony here since I could do everything in one spot and most rentals were included. Tables, Chiavari chairs, chairs for my ceremony were all included in my rental price. That made it so much easier on me. The space is tucked away off the beaten path in DC but provides a great value. Working with Cara and Xhemil was fairly easy as I visited the place a couple of times to check out the space. The only problem I see with this place is if you are going to use it for your ceremony. During the summer there are lots of mosquitoes and they have a dumpster outside that you have to figure out how to cover. Otherwise this is a good space for those of us who have more than a barebones budget but want some things thrown in for the cost.

We had our reception here and it was gorgeous, a great value and unique. I was glad we had a venue that no one had ever seen before and unlike other places it didn't need decorations to be spruced up - it was perfect as is - we knew as soon as we walked in that it was perfect. Xhemil was very helpful and Cara (although virtual, she never uses the phone) was good at reminders. Having it there on a Friday gave us an even better deal. A few things of note - the outside Coke machine can't be moved but if you want guests to use the patio you can cover it up with a tarp (otherwise it looks kinda tacky). I was surprised the day before the wedding to find out that having my friends (who were doing my flowers) show up earlier in the day before the ceremony to set up flowers on one table to the side would cost an extra $250 per hour - I thought this was excessive and uncalled for since we were not renting the hall for those hours, just simply using a side table for an hour or two - needless to say finding this out at the last minute was not good. But we came up with a solution (doing the flowers in my house) and in the end it was flawless. Having buses take guests there also made it a lot easier . Have a wonderful wedding!

What a gorgeous location.... when we saw it, we immediately knew where we were going to have our reception!

Cara and Xhemil were wonderful - and wonderfully low-key. We planned our wedding over the course of just a few months and Cara was very helplful with gentle remiders about some of the paperwork that we needed to have sorted out.

I agree that the decor of this venue is such that all you have to do is put flowers on the tables - that's all we did and we got SOOO many compliments about how beautiful our reception was. (It helps that our florist was fabulous!!)

If I had it to do again - I'd only change one thing... I'd have had the blinds closed. We got married on a very hot and sunny day and our guests are squinting in several of our photos. But I have to take the blame for that - Xhemil asked me if I wanted the blinds open or closed... and I said open!

LOVED this site - and I will certainly be recommending it to our friends :)

I can't count how many compliments we received on our beautiful reception venue! I am not really sure where you would find a prettier venue, and you don't need to do much extra decorating - we had very simple centerpieces for tables - that's all that was needed. The gardens across the street are absolutely beautiful for taking pre or post-ceremony pictures. We didn't do a whole lot of searching for reception venues because this one was just perfect, but my understanding is that it is a lot cheaper than other places you'll find in DC. St. Francis Hall doesn't have a list of caterers you must choose from, but they do have a recommended list in a variety of price ranges - this was really helpful to me so looking for a caterer wasn't so overwhelming, and I knew the caterers on the list would be familiar with the venue. There isn't a full kitchen on-site, but my caterer didn't have any problems with this. The tables and basic chairs are included in the rental, which makes life so much easier. Parking is easy - there is a 40-car lot and then ample street parking. It has a bus stop across the street and is really easy to get to from the Metro.

There are two main people that you would communicate with - Xhemil is the onsite person and Cara is the "paperwork" person. Xhemil is very friendly, helpful, and really wants to make brides/couples feel at ease and comfortable. I didn't visit the venue too much, but he was always there and made himself available for me when I came. Please think about him when you are deciding your gratuities, as he has to work long and strange hours on reception days!

I found Cara to be friendly and helpful. I don't really understand all the negativity when it comes to dealing with Cara in the previous reviews - I am guessing that sometimes tone doesn't come across properly in email, as that's the only way I ever communicated with her. No complaints from me on that - email is easier for me.

My review has fewer stars in responsiveness because communicating with two people was sometimes confusing or inconsistent - I didn't get the impression that Cara and Xhemil conversed very much about the facilities or specific events. For example, the paperwork indicates that they will not store alcohol onsite before the day of the wedding, but Xhemil indicated there was a locked room in which he could store alcohol (and any other miscellaneous supplies) so long as there was an inventory sheet given to him for the caterer to sign for. (Again, he really wants people to be happy and comfortable!) We also had given Cara an estimate of tables and chairs we would need one month before the wedding, then a final count two weeks before the wedding. I'm not sure why, but Xhemil never got the final count. Thank goodness my fiance had stopped by a couple days beforehand and verified the table and chair counts with Xhemil, or the tables at the reception (guest tables, food tables, etc.) would have been wrong.

If you want to get TONS of compliments on your beautiful reception venue, this is the place to have it! My husband and I agreed that the reception venue was worth every penny we paid for it. You will not be disappointed!

St. Francis Hall is a beautiful venue and is a great value for the money. The on-site person, Xhemil, was very easy to work with. The hall is so beautiful that I only had to provide centerpieces and table cloths--the hall didn't need anything else to be gorgeous! My guests absolutely loved it and repeatedly commented on how beautiful it was! Although it's a little out of the way in north DC, it was much cheaper for me to have my reception at St. Francis Hall and hire shuttles to take the guests to and from there than it would have been to find a comparable venue near the Capitol (where my ceremony was held). Truly a hidden gem!

St. Francis Hall is a beautiful venue, with lots of room and a good setup. I recommend it for a wedding or another event.

I had my wedding ceremony outside in the garden to the side of the building. It is a serene and peaceful location, that is green and pretty. The ground was moist and a bit muddy since it had been raining, but we really wanted to be outside so we did it there anyway. We covered the railing and the dumpster with cloth, tulle, flowers, etc. so that the pictures would look better. It looked very nice that way.

The hall itself is large and can hold a large number of guests. We had a family-only wedding, so that kept us about 120 guests and we had plenty of room for dancing, the cake table, the DJ, gift table, and a kids table. And on the stage we had a photo booth. There are side wings to the main hall, all of our food and drinks were in those. The kitchen is for warming and chilling only (no stove/oven/etc), but the caterer could do some final food preparation at stations.

Regarding the hall staff, there are 3 distinct persons that we dealt with throughout the process. First is Cara Berger, who is the Contracts Manager for the hall. She is only reachable via email, despite the fact that she advertises a phone number, she only responds via email. She is not responsive enough, often taking several days to respond to questions. She also did not send us materials in a timely manner. For months I was going to the Hall and taking measurements because I did not think they provided them, when just a few weeks before our wedding, she sent the hall dimensions and final details (only after I asked for the final details confirmation sheet, which I needed to provide to them). She should have provided this information to me early so that I could get her the details she needed, and I could plan on my side. It was a shame that I had to email her several times to get the forms that she required for me to submit to her. Also Cara is all about getting money. We paid $3000 for the venue. When I asked about a time for rehearsal, she told me it was $400 additional each hour, but she would give me a break for $200 and a one-hour window that she chose. I was astounded, as we did not plan to even go inside, and finally waived the fee. Wow, to pay for the rental and not provide 30 minutes for rehearsal was outrageous to me. I am very glad she waived the fee, but again she could have told me about the rehearsal without me having to ask, and without making me push for it.

The Hall Manager, Xhemil, is very nice. He seems unresponsive since the web site lists him as available M-F 7am - 3 pm. However, he works Wednesday - Sunday, and on weekends he is at the hall for events. Xhemil tries to be as helpful and available as possible. It seems that Cara Berger does not fully disclose her arrangements with him. For example, she gave us a 1 pm - 2 pm window for rehearsal at the hall. Xhemil told us that we should not have arrived until after 1:30 pm. Not sure what happened here, but he accommodated us. Another problem I had was that I made an appointment with Xhemil and my caterer. When I arrived, a cleaning staff opened the door for me, then ignored me. When the caterer arrived, we waited a bit and then asked the man cleaning if Xhemil would be meeting us. He said Xhemil was sick and again went about his business. It would have been better to have gotten a call or email from Cara or Xhemil, but we were on our own. But truly, Xhemil goes out of his way to try to help plan for the event and to help make sure everyone is accommodated. It seems he does not get paid (or paid much), so if he is helpful, please think about giving him some recognition - a tip is nice, a letter to his boss is good, too.

Finally, when the wedding happened, Xhemil had to leave towards the beginning. I am not sure what happened, but at 3:30 pm, the man who we had met when he was cleaning brought in a ladder and started helping to take down decorations. That is great EXCEPT we still had one hour left in our reception! As soon as guests saw that, they thought they had overstayed and hurried out. How embarrassing for us! I am not sure if this was his fault or maybe one of my aunt's (who is always in a hurry) but I wish someone would have checked with me first! The DJ and caterer then checked with me and I said to keep going. I didn't let it ruin my day, but it definitely made my reception a lot shorter than it should have been!

The wedding was beautiful, both outside and in. I love this venue. I always have, as it is part of the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington DC and they have a beautiful church and grounds (which you can use for your wedding photos).

Overall, this is a great place. It would be even better if the Contracts Manager worked more closely with the Hall Manager. But I highly recommend it for a wedding or other event!

St. Francis Hall responded with the following comments:

So happy to hear that you had such a lovely celebration at the Hall and we appreciate the great rating!

You make a good point about the Hall diagram and we have made a note to include that with the contract so clients have it to work from. We certainly provide it immediately to anyone who requests it but this is a good reminder to be proactive.

The unique challenge we had with your rehearsal was that yours was a Sunday wedding and we had another event the day before. That limited the time that was available for you to rehearse - but we're so glad it worked out and we were able to give you time at no charge.

Xhemil is a tremendous asset to the Hall and, as you acknowledged, works very hard to accommodate our clients. We did follow up with your caterer and confirmed that it was, as you suspected, your relatives that started cleaning things up early. Our staff was trying to be helpful as it became a safety issue having guests in heels, dressy attire trying to climb ladders and remove decor.

Many thanks for your constructive review and, again, we're happy to hear it was such a successful and happy celebration for you! St. Francis Hall is a great value and truly a hidden gem in the city.

The people we worked with were amazing and gave us everything they promised and more! This was the single component of the wedding that went PERFECTLY!

The hall is gorgeous and lots of parking. Only issue was transportation of guests to and from - we got shuttles.

And they were pretty strict (at least on paper) about times (set-up, clean-up, etc).

I was very satisfied with St Francis Hall. It was gorgeous, and it overlooked portions of the DC fireworks on our July 4th wedding - and given the cost of the venue was a fantastic deal. There are some restrictions on what you can do with the space, as it is owned by a monastery, but we didn't have any problems with them. They are also very strict about doing what the contract says, which would only be a problem if you want to change something within a week of your event. For the most part they are very accommodating when you plan ahead of time.

Cara, who you would only correspond with over email, takes care of the contracts. She is as easy to work with as you are. If you are not the kind of person who changes their mind a dozen times or throws crazy bridezilla moments at her, she may offer you deals on some event rentals.

They do have a list of caterers they prefer, as those caterers have proven themselves to be trustworthy and appeasing to guests in the past, but you do not need to use any of them. We decided on a caterer too late to use any on the list, and were wishing we had. Our caterers - Elmina Catering - did a VERY unprofessional job.

What a hidden gem! We loved St. Francis Hall and were so happy to find it. It's a little 'out there' but totally worth the drive. The neighborhood is pretty and the Monastery is gorgeous for pictures. It was also nice to find a venue that can hold up to 250 without breaking the bank! The reservation process was easy - we found Cara very pleasant and efficient to work with. She is a consultant and doesn't work on site - so we never met her in person but the on site guy, Xhemil, couldn't be more helpful. Cara made sure he had all of our details and he executed them flawlessly. Even helped walk guests to their cars at the end of the night. We highly recommend St. Francis Hall!

St. Francis Hall is an absolutely gorgeous venue, and it was, by far, the most-complimented aspect of our wedding. Everyone loved it. It's so beautiful that we needed to provide very little in the way of decor (just table clothes and some centerpieces) to make the hall look perfect. The price, while not cheap, is reasonable for D.C. and is considerably less than many cookie-cutter hotel ballrooms you might rent. The hall lets you bring in any caterer you want from a very long approved list, and you can also bring your own alcohol, which saved us a lot of money. The woman who is in charge of reservations, Cara, can be prickly and difficult to work with--she wasn't very flexible about the fact that I was doing the flowers myself and therefore couldn't drop them off right before the reception started--but it was worth it to have our reception in this venue. Eventually, she consented to allow me to drop off the flowers first thing in the morning, which I really appreciated. The building manager, Xhemil, is truly wonderful and really did everything he could to help make our day perfect. An added bonus is that you can take pictures in the Franciscan Monastery gardens across the street from St. Francis Hall.

I held my wedding reception at St. Francis Hall several years ago before there was aplace to post reviews for the venue. I have the fondest memories of having my absolutely beautiful wedding reception at St. Francis Hall. It has such wonderful granduer and the room upstairs that overlooks the hall, allowed my bridal party to have spectacular views of the room as the guests were arriving and we were waiting to enter. Even years later, I still have people asking me about the Hall. It is absolutely beautiful and the staff was very accommodating and great to work with. I highly recommend St. Francis Hall for any event, but especially weddings. An added plus is the beautiful gardens at St. Francis, it is great for photographs.
