We loved Stonehurst from our first visit, and were not disappointed! It is a lovely old building with tons of grounds outside for a ceremony, pictures, and for kids to play on the lawn. It is nicely separated from the surrounding city by a small forest -- about as close as you can get to rural that near Boston. The event went fantastic, and I know Marcia was working hard behind the scenes making sure everything happened on schedule. She also worked with our liquor supplier to arrange delivery beforehand, as well as doing her own inventory for us so we would get reimbursed for the unused liquor. A few notes on working with Marcia: She seems brusque at first but warms quickly. She also has rigid ideas of how things should work, but she's just protecting the historic space and is willing to work with whatever you want to do. She much prefers talking on the phone versus email and it can be a bit hard to reach her. Just keep calling! There were also limited times to drop things off but it wasn't a problem for us and shows the popularity of the venue. We'd heartily recommend it!

My husband and I fell in love with this place from the moment we saw it. It really is a little wooded oasis in the middle of Waltham.

The rental includes wooden folding chairs as well as 60 inch tables, which was great too.

We are very happy with how our wedding turned out, but be warned that Marcia, the site coordinator, is very opinionated and will have no problem telling you exactly what she thinks. That being said, she does have the best interest of the house and her clients at heart, but be prepared to stand up for yourself if need be.

ASK QUESTIONS!!

Guests are not allowed in the house until 30 minutes before your wedding unless they are close family in pictures or in the wedding, so plan for this or hope for good weather! They will not let you serve alcohol for the last 45 minutes of your event. I had no idea about this until I went to the bar near the end of my wedding.

Stonehurst was an amazing venue and we were totally lucky with the weather. Outside is magnificent and an amazing setting. The area for the cocktail hour is also absolutely gorgeous! Marcia was helpful and made sure everything ran smoothly and perfectly and, most importantly to me, on time! Everything was great. It's a bring in your own kind of venue, which I appreciated because I wanted to pick out my own caterer, that was really important to us. If you don't mind doing that extra leg, this venue is great. They also throw in tables and chairs so that saves some on the renting!

Don't miss out on this hidden venue close to many hotels on Rt. 128 and easy access to Logan airport via the Pike. We didn't want to be a hotel ballroom or a church for our wedding so Stonehurst was the perfect venue. What it lacks in modern conveniences, it makes up for with historic charm and some of the most beautiful gardens in the area. With influences from Japan and the Middle East, the rooms in the Estate were the perfect setting for both our ceremony, reception and dancing.

Marcia Goodwin, the event coordinator, was extremely helpful and honest about what works in the venue. My husband and I visited the estate a few times as we made various decisions about the catering, flowers, music, and our photography. Both emailing and calling worked with when connecting with Marcia. She sat us down initially and went through the various things we needed to do since the venue is owned by the City of Waltham; like the alcohol license which requires some planning.

We had 75 people at the wedding and that allowed for enough space in the dining room to easily walk around to greet our guests. We held our ceremony inside and luckily it was not super hot in august so the lack of air conditioning didn't matter. Marcia was really good at helping us understand the flow of the Estate and how to organize the day to maximize guests comfort.

All of our guests really enjoyed the Estate and commented on how lovely it was to find this oasis in greater Boston so close to everything else we had planned that weekend.

We had our wedding here on May 25th, and are so happy we chose this venue. We were looking for a place that could accommodate both the wedding ceremony and reception inside or out, without having to rent a tent, and Stonehurst proved to be a memorable and breathtaking spot both inside and out. Marcia, the site manager, can be harder to reach by email, but she's great by phone and very attentive. She also offered great advice on how to manage ceremony and reception flow, and strategies to ensure that our guests were well cared for and had a pleasant and memorable experience. The venue can technically accommodate 150, but we had about 105, and think that was perfect. I wouldn't recommend pushing it beyond 125 unless you have to. If you are looking for a place with understated but grand elegance, surrounded by rustic beauty, Stonehurst is the perfect place. Note that the manager has right of refusal for caterers (we used Season to Taste) but has had enough major vendors that it shouldn't be a problem for most major caterers. You also have to get a liquor license through the town of Waltham about two months before, but Marcia will explain all of this to you. Lastly, the rental of the venue allows a maximum of 5 hours for the event, with two hours for set up and 1 hour for breakdown. This was the only downside, as we would have happily added an hour or two if possible to make the day last as long as we could.

I loved everything about this venue from the moment I drove up the path. Having a wedding here is like having a rich relative lend you their estate for the day, only better. The house has so much history, character and is just beautiful. There is so much art, detail and space to explore. I also loved that, unlike some other estate properties, you are actually allowed to use the HOUSE, rather than pitch a tent outside beside the house, and the venue can accommodate about 120 people comfortably.

The function manager and guardian of the property, Marcia, was also a wonderful wealth of information. She genuinely cares about the property but also your special day in it. She may seem a little gruff at first, but she is definitely someone you want in your corner when trying to coordinate an event and all the planning, vendors and details that go into it.

Stonehurst is so beautiful, and for us affordable, since we live in Waltham and got a discount. You can also choose your caterer and bring your own alcohol, which was huge for us. Marsha, the function coordinator, was actually lovely, and very helpful. We would have our wedding there again in a heartbeat.

I had a great experience at the Paine Estate. It is such a beautiful place; my fiance and I fell in love with it right away. I thought I was going to have to travel an hour away to find a unique wedding venue, but then I found Stonehurst right in my backyard. We got many compliments on our venue, and our wedding there was just lovely.

I grew up in the area, and attended functions at the Paine Estate before, so I knew how beautiful it was. It was the only reception site I visited because I loved the space, indoors and outdoors. The Estate is on conservation land, so it is very quiet and you can hardly believe it's in Waltham. All my guests remarked at how beautiful the house and the grounds were. We had our ceremony outside on the lawn, and cocktail hour outside on the patio, which was a great option for a fall evening.

The only downside about the space is that the main dining room only accommodates 100 guests (10 tables of 10), so we had 2 tables of overflow guests into where the dance floor is. I put my bridal party out there though, and they certainly didn't mind being right in the action.

Otherwise, I was a bit disappointed with the event coordinator. Unless you reach out to her, she does not contact you for anything. I was told by my caterer (who catered at the Estate before) about the liquor license requirements. This was not mentioned by the event coordinator at all. The event coordinator is also very restrictive with what caterers she will work with, and how the space may be set up. I do understand these restrictions, as it is a historical site; however, the event coordinator does not communicate these things in a friendly manner. All in all, I tried to stay out of her way and play by her rules. In the end, we had a beautiful wedding, and I certainly would recommend the site to a friend.

We loved having our wedding at Stonehurst. Marcia was the perfect liaison for us: sensible, ready with advice, but happy to accommodate any of our requests. They were able to provide tables and the poles for our Huppah, and Marcia's advice for the layout of the rooms was much needed. We did need to rent plants and lights to help with the lighting, and Waltham requires you to attend a town meeting for a liquor license, but it was worth it. The rooms for getting dressed for the actual event also could have used a little love, but otherwise we couldn't have asked for a better venue!
