The physical venue is mixed. The "garden" setting is the more wedding-appropriate in terms of trees & shade, but the stage for the ceremony was rickety. The usual coordinator seemed knowledgable and confident, but she was only there for the rehersal, at the end of which she announced that she was turning the wedding over to her less experienced assistant. The assistant worked hard and managed to pull it off. The reception hall is modest at best, and we had to do all of the decorating. Food service was buffet with average pork and chicken, and guests cleared their own tables. The air conditioning struggled.
My biggest disappointment was the alleged DJ. He made no effort to contact the couple prior to the wedding, showing up about an hour prior to the beginning. At the wedding venue and without asking, he unplugged the extension cord we had provided to power lights on the stage and used it for his speakers. The reception: Though he was given explicit written instructions well in advance as to what to play and particular announcements to make, it was clear that he had not given it much thought. He left out one significant recognition (the bride's grandfather whose name she carries) and told the bride 5 minutes before the last dance that he did not have the song she had requested. Fortunately, a groomsman had the CD in his car and we used that. My daughter was in tears in the middle of the floor, hurt and embarassed. When I confronted him as he was slipping out the back door, his defense was that he usually just "wings it" and that works ok. I could go on, but you get the picture. My understanding is that he works for the ranch owners. The husband of the owner couple interceeded. He was generally professional, though it was clear he thought that my disappointment was uncalled for. He reluctantly agreed to refund $200 of the $400 DJ fee. While this provided a modicum of justice, it could not undo the damage. The DJ apologized, weakly. The owner handed me a check and walked away. Probably just as well.
