I had my wedding ceremony and reception held at The Chamberlin on Ft. Monroe in Hampton Va, when I first decided to sign the contract with the director of events I was working with a lady named Susan Womack who was very professional and very kind and you could really tell she wanted our business. Unfortunately she was no longer our wedding coordinator and we were given a woman named Christy Tolliver to work with. She was very unprofessional and rude. She also brought her daughter to my rehearsal which took her attention away from her job of Coordinating. We also had to rehearse in front of all the Chamberlin residence who were eating dinner in the ballroom that evening. It was very awkward. When I had asked for 4 of the dinner tables to be moved she told me that it was impossible to move them because it would take too much time to set them back up during cocktail hour. Since this was unacceptable to me my mother and maid of honor talked with the Banquet manager and he had absolutely no problem having the tables moved for the ceremony and set back up for the reception. On the day of the wedding Mrs. Tolliver showed up at 3:00 for a 4:30 wedding. My florist(Cathy nester from The Flower cupboard), cake maker(Charlie Little from Cakes by Charlie), and mother all helped and coordinated the set up for the ceremony since the real coordinator was not there yet. She showed up and when she was confronted about why she was so late and why she was dressed casual for a formal wedding she decided to yell and scream at the mother of the bride and the maid of honor then went to her office. She showed back up a half hour before the wedding was suppose to start to pin flowers on the groomsmen and ring bearers. during my wedding I had residence form the Chamberlin walking through my cocktail hour. This venue was definitely not worth $13,000.00. And $700.00 went to a coordinator that never coordinated anything for wedding.

I don't think there is a more beautiful space to say I do in Hampton Roads. I loved the venue, the area, the water, the rocks! Everything was amazing. The Ballroom is amazing, spacious and the floor to ceiling windows and the classic decor are really all the decoration you need for your reception.
My only complaint for the venue was the Director of Events, Susan Womack. She was terribly disorganized, slow to respond and would frequently suggest or offer things and then completely forget about them. I don't live in the area so I would have to drive three hours to meet with her just to find she didn't have any notes from previous meetings or conversations. Once I emailed her to schedule a meeting time and she replied saying that day would be perfect since she was already planning to be at the property to assist with a resident St. Patrick's Day party. I responded that I would see her then and I would call her when I got on the road. I left her a message that morning as we left. When we arrived she was not available and later told me she wasn't aware I was coming. I was so confused and she was so certain I had to go back and check my email to ensure I hadn't made a mistake after all. She was the only stressful part of my wedding planning process.
The rest of the staff was so helpful and attentive. There is another Susan (I don't remember her last name), she is the main manager and I loved her. When the dark clouds rolled in, the winds ripped and the rain poured, she was very flexible, had great ideas and worked with my coordinator to ensure my wedding day ended up even better than it would have if we'd kept it outside.I met the bar manager, the head chef, even the wait staff were all great. I absolutely recommend having your event at the Chamberlin, however, you absolutely must hire a wedding planner that can interact with Susan on your behalf so you don't go insane trying to communicate with her.

The "events" coordinator is the most unprofessional woman I have ever worked with. The Chamberlin receptionists are extremely rude and the overall establishment is inflexible. They are trying to run a wedding venue and a retirement center...just doesn't work! They don't allow loud music, they offer "bridal sweets" for 250 dollars a night and asked me to bring my own blankets! Right before my rehearsal the events director told me if my bridesmaids were too loud we would get the cops called on us! The coordinator lost my paperwork, had my cocktail hour in the WRONG room, went back on her word...oh there is such a long list! DO NOT recommend!

I paid over $25,000 to have my daughter's wedding and reception at the Chamberlain. They had just hired a new wedding coordinator who was without a doubt the most unprofessional woman I have ever dealt with. She lost paper work, made suggestions to us which we followed and then completely did something different on numerous occasions. Not to mention that she was just outright rude. What amazes me the most is that her supervisor never once followed through with customer service inquiries. The food preparations were poor as well; the steak and fish were nothing more than frozen meals warmed up on a dish. If you are looking for a pleasant wedding experience ...save yourself some time, there is no attention to detail or customer satisfaction policy.

My husband grew up on Ft. Monroe so there was no question that we wanted to get married at The Chamberlin. The venue is absolutely gorgeous. It has been very nicely maintained, and the staff there are great. We worked primarily with Shay, and she was a miracle. It rained the day of our wedding. So instead of having the ceremony in the reception hall (like most venues will do), she insisted that we not do that. Instead she arranged for the ceremony to be held in front of the beautiful doors that lead out to the lawn. It was a intimate and perfect. The food was also great. All of our guests were raving about the food during the cocktail hour (crab cakes and cheese platter) and EVERYONE loved the dinner. We went with the Poe menu, but instead of choosing between the proteins we served everyone half a serving of steak and half a serving of salmon. The kitchen was also really accommodating about guests with different dietary restrictions. Would recommend this venue to any bride, the venue makes for beautiful pictures.

My wedding was absolutely amazing and everything I wanted it to be! Shay Rybin is the BOMB!! She helped through the entire process. Was a call away anytime I needed her. The venue had amazing food, service and views. It is right on the Chesapeake Bay. During our ceremony amazing large ships were drifting by the whole time it was amazing!

I had my wedding at the Chamberlin, I must say my wedding was beautiful, however I was disappointed with the customer service I received especially with the amount of money I spent having my wedding at the Chamberlin. I was told my bridal suite would be ready by 10 am, I arrived at 10:30 am and my suite was not ready, I had to wait 30 min. for the staff to clean my room. It also caused my me to run late, which caused my wedding to start late.

While my guest were waiting, the where a lot of biting flies . When my wedding was over my guest went to the roof top Solarium and where served wine in dirty glasses. The food was late, they brought the food in while my guest waited to eat.

I had to pay for security which I felt there was no security, it was a regular guard that walks around the faculty anyway, 24 hrs a day because it is a old retire living faculty as well. There was no actual security that I felt I had to pay $30.00 an hour for.

I was very disappointed especially because I had only seen my coordinator 3 x that day for my wedding. There was extremely lack of communication, and she never bothered to do a follow up with me and my husband knowing that we were upset about the our experiences, no followup call the day before the wedding to do a check off list, go over the the time frame of the wedding or anything. The food was good, However for the money I paid I was not a happy bride. I say to all bride write emails to the coordinator, because the conversations we had she claims we didn't but a few emails I had to show her in writing as to what we discussed. Its easy to pick up the phone but it's better to have your conversation in writing.
I had a contract on a horse carriage ride, she claims I never told her, that is bull S***. I know I told her because I needed to be down stairs at a certain time to leave from my reception. The Chamberlin contract states one thing, but they do another thing, I had great experience up until the day of my wedding

The Chamberlin is an absolutely gorgeous venue and not many people know about it! You get a venue with character and elegance, instead of a typical hotel ballroom. We ran into some major issues the week of the wedding and after some discussion, they were very willing to do whatever they could to keep our day special. Everyone loved the reception and commented on how beautiful it was! Some things to work on a bit would be responsiveness and the little details i.e. we did not get our meals at the end of the night. We are very happy with our decision to use the Chamberlin and would recommend it to anyone!

We had a terrible experience here for our wedding, the customer service was awful, I would barely call the 'Event Coordinator' a coordinator at all. She made countless mistakes and made the entire experience more stressful than it already was. The bar was not set-up in time for our cocktail hour to begin, so even though we paid for 3 hours of open bar, the bar outside was not set up for a full 20 minutes after our cocktail hour began! Super unprofessional, when it did get set up, it was in the wrong location and the line went all the way around the veranda. Many people did not get a drink until the end of the cocktail hour. The food at the wedding was terrible, as well. We had an excellent sample months before and were ensured that the food would be the same at our wedding. They served us the wrong salad, the wrong risotto and the chicken was dry and tasteless. When we asked to speak to the chef that we had been working with for almost a year, we were told he had the night off! After all of this we were told we would be compensated for our troubles, after a discussion with both the Event Coordinator and the Executive Director, we were compensated not even 2% of the $14000 we spent on what was supposed to be a magical night. Don't waste your time here, you can get a better view, better food and better service elsewhere

Loved our reception here. The view and the ballroom itself is absolutely gorgeous. The wait staff for our reception was quick and very personable. We have heard nothing but great things about the food from our guests and we loved it as well. I believe an additional staff person could perhaps be useful there for more responsiveness to inquiries since brides tend to have lots of random questions. Christy Tolliver was quite flexible which helped offset the delays, and was nice to not have to worry about. We had a great time!

Overall, everything was beautiful at The Chamberlin. I felt that they could have been more helpful with setting up our favors on the tables and not rushing people to eat once wedding party entered reception. There were a couple things that happened and did not make us happy. I contacted the Chamberlin after wedding, the following day, in regards to some cards that were missing from our card box with no real care shown as to what happened to them. Our guests loved the historic setting and beautiful outdoor venues available at Chamberlin. The food was good, but a little pricy for quality.

Christy did a fabulous job of getting everything set up...especially given the fact that we were planning our wedding from a different state. The staff was so courteous and they all were very accommodating!! We had a fabulous wedding and everything turned out beautifully!!!! Thank you so much to everyone at The Chamberlin!!!

The Chamberlin was an absolutely perfect place for our wedding reception. However, I was quite disappointed to be told a week prior to my wedding that the Chamberlin coordinator we'd been working with would not be present on my wedding day. The day turned out beautiful, but I felt we should have known much further in advance, and been working with the person who was available that particular day.

I actually only had my rehearsal dinner at the Chamberlin. We were originally going to have our reception there but we had a change in plans. The rehearsal dinner was help on the rooftop solarium and it was fantastic. The food was great, our family and friends raved about the quality of the food. The service was also great. We asked for one dessert with the package and they ended up not having it so they replaced it with about 6 other types of desserts. The view was amazing and the weather was great. I would highly recommend the Chamberlin if you can afford it.

Christy Tolliver at the Chamberlin was extremely accommodating when we were booted out of our first venue. She made everything so easy, understandable and feasible. She was accessible at all times and answered all of our questions immediately. She made our special day come to reality.

The Chamberlin is one of the most beautiful venues we could have ever imagined having our wedding. The view from the Chesapeake dining room was priceless and the food's presentation and taste was unbelievable. Our guests were in awe and impressed. We could not have picked a better place for our wedding.
