Origins and Purpose Founded in 1984, The Upper Crust Catering has catered thousands of weddings, corporate events, and parties throughout the Pacific Northwest. We are driven by our passion for people and our passion for food in everything we do. This extends not only to the guests we serve on a daily basis but also to the overlooked and marginalized in society. Service through Urban Hands For over a decade, Upper Crust has served high quality meals to roughly 1,000 hungry individuals a week through our nonprofit arm Urban Hands and our partnerships with local nonprofits including Tent City 3, the Organization for Prostitution Survivors (OPS), Street Youth Ministries, Julia’s Place, Community Dinners, and DADS (Divine Alternatives for Dads Services). We believe everyone is entitled to a warm nutritious meal, and we’ll do what it takes to make that happen. Any leftovers are returned to Upper Crust and shared with the community on next day as well. Second Chance Job Opportunities In addition to our meal program, The Upper Crust has committed itself to providing real sustainable jobs to those who need a helping hand. A portion of our laborforce comes from our partnerships with local nonprofits. We are committed to providing liveable wages, teaching culinary skills, and believe everyone is entitled to a second chance to pursue their dreams. The moment we were in contact with Upper Crust we were getting much more information than other vendors about what we could have and do. It's such a relief to not have to beg for information and wait days for emails, wondering about what is possible. I work nights and conducted most of my correspondence by email and it was not a problem. If I did call, Bethany was prompt and friendly and knew exactly who I was and where we were at in the process. Upper Crust was able to execute a pipe and drape backdrop with fabric for my ceremony area. Instead of having to deal with an additional rental company, they just did it all. All the rental stuff just was easy to add and describe and it was done. And the rates they charged were the same as what I was seeing for hiring separate rental companies. Our food was awesome. There were details that happened that I wasn't even expecting like having nice champagne serving trays or a framed menu to describe the food to my guests. We had the ceremony immediately before the food was to be served and in the same space and it was no issue.

I was so excited to find that Upper Crust had a banquet room that could fit my 35 person rehearsal dinner. I have always loved their food and atmosphere, and the very private banquet room was an excellent venue for our special night. Everyone we spoke with was extremely accommodating to all of our requests, including having a gluten- and dairy- free option. We didn't have to put down a deposit until another group requested the same night for their event, making it easy to book with them, knowing we could change our minds if something came up. The food was excellent and we were all served in a timely fashion. It was great to have the projector and screen at our disposal, which we used to show a slide show during the event. Excellent service and just a great night! Thanks!

Upper Crust catered my wedding in July. Joey was so great - always emailed me right back, scheduled phone calls and tastings. I never felt like they were trying to "up sell" me and while my budget wasn't huge, they made us feel like we were very important. The food was amazing and loved by all! The Bartender could have used a little guidance on the beer taps (CO2 was over pressurized so it ran out before the beer did) and mixed drink lacked a few ingredients...but otherwise very stellar choice! Linens were gorgeous and they made our day stress less. I would highly recommend Upper Crust catering. Thank you, Joey!

The food was excellent. We had over 200 guests and everyone's food was good. The passed appetizers received rave reviews as did the risotto stuffed chicken. The company was easy to work with and responded promptly to our requests. The contract was clear and easy to understand what was included. We would use them again and had several guests ask for their contact informatiom.

I got married July 13th at The Fremont Abbey in Seattle. Upper Crust is one of there preferred caterers. I was thinking of paying the fee and using an outside caterer that I worked with before, but decided to meet with the preferred caters first to see what options there were. Once meeting with Upper Crust it was a done deal. My husband and I spent hours at our first meeting, just having great conversation with Joey. I started out with just the basics for my wedding day, then because of the amazing service ended up using Upper Crust for everything (guest tables, cocktail tables, linens, runners, appetizers etc). I am kind of a control freak because so was stressing about all that Upper Crust had to do on my wedding day thinking it seemed like to much for a few people to handle (Bar, Set up tables, linens, appetizers and drinks, buffet and the list goes on) but boy did they deliver. Everything was PERFECT. They followed through on everything (and more) they said would. I was beyond impressed with the staff that worked my wedding. They were fast, accommodating, kind, and focused. Did I also mention the food was DELICIOUS? Everyone came up to me telling me how wonderful it was. Thank you Joey and to everyone at Upper Crust for making my wedding day perfect. You were a pleasure to work with and I look forward to the next time we cross paths.

Also this company was great to work with form beginning to end, they made everything simple and took the work away from me. Do not hire this vendor!

My husband and I hired Jim and The Upper Crust Catering for our wedding in October 2009 and it is the BIGGEST mistake and regret we have from our wedding day.

When we initially met with Jim (the owner) to go over packages to see if this company was a good fit for us, he was great. He seemed understanding that we were on a budget and promised he could provide a great product for the amount we had to spend on catering. We spent more than an hour there talking about our wedding plans and such and walked away feeling truly blessed to have found a vendor that "cared" about their clients and provided an estimate inside our budget. Well....unfortunately this was all a false exterior.

Not only were they extremely difficult to get a hold of (several emails AND calls were required to get one response), but a week before the wedding when we provided our final head-count they tacked on an extra $1,000 to the bill because we had 25 more guests RSVP (considering we were spending only $2,500 on appetizers for 200 people, paying $1,000 more for only 25 people was CRAZY!). He explained that they wanted to make sure they didn't run out of food (which is totally understandable) and that we needed several more tables (and therefore linens and such) even if it was only 25 people. He explained that because it was so much extra on top of our deposit and estimate he'd do us the honor of personally being at our wedding to oversee everything and make sure it went smoothly. Knowing that it is worth the money not to run out of food and make sure our guests were cared for, we happily paid the extra amount even though it went way above our budget.

The day of the wedding 1) They ran out of food; I didn't even get anything to eat at my OWN wedding! After they tacked on $1,000 to purposely NOT run out of food! 2) The "bartender" they provided did not check ID's and we therefore had underage drinking at the event -- something the venue AND we would have been personally liable for. 3) Jim did NOT, ever, show up to the event. We paid for him to be there and he never showed. 4) At the end of the night when they were packing up, they started carting the alcohol we purchased INDEPENDENTLY from the catering company into their truck to take back with them. My mom had to stop them from taking it, explaining the bride and groom purchased that themselves....they left it all on the sidewalk for my mom to pick up.

Obviously being seriously upset with the service we received and paid for, we sent SEVERAL emails and called dozens of times within a month of the wedding to speak with Jim and explain to him what happened -- simply just to hear that he was sorry for their poor service or to just acknowledge what happened was wrong. Not only did it take several emails and phone calls to receive a response (my husband finally caught him when he answered the phone during one attempt), but Jim denied any of this happening and that since he wasn't there he couldn't confirm that our complaints were valid. SERIOUSLY!? No apology, no attempt to make things right, not even an acknowledgement or consideration of these complaints.

Long story short: this guy and this company have a friendly, gregarious, and caring charade they put on, but it is a total lie. Their service is atrocious and company a sham. They scammed us out of money on the most important day of our lives and failed to even respond or acknowledge our complaints, which are 100% legitimate. If Jim had owned up to these shortcomings and even apologized once for any of them we would gladly forgive and move on, but I do not want any other bride or groom to suffer hiring this horrible catering company.

Again, the only thing we hired them for was to provide food and good service to our guests, and they 100% FAILED at both of those things.

We interviewed and had tastings with about half a dozen caterers for our 90-person wedding and the result was this: the ones with great food had unresponsive staff while the ones with great staff had bad food. We went with Upper Crust because they seemed to be happy medium and the best rate.
PRO's:
- Staff, and especially Joey was great to work with, answered e-mails & phone calls in a timely manner, professional
- They have their own dishes, silverware, linen and stemware so you don't have to pay extra (at least $1000) to rent these items like at many other caterers we looked at.
- They didn't add on mandatory gratuity or lots of extra fees.
- No min. order - if your guest count drops you don't have to pay extra.
- Flexible menu and tastings. We also requested that they source produce from a farm on our venue for the salads for dinner and Joey made that happen while the other caterers we interviewed didn't want to.
- They do great charity work in their community feeding homeless people and donating their services and products to other charitable organizations.
CON's:
- The food was not great - just ok. Our pork and salmon were overcooked and the rice pilaf side lacked some of the ingredients we had during the tastings. We were ok w/ not getting the best food from the beginning because we decided that since catering is our biggest cost we were going to cut back on this.
- The staff arrived late on our wedding day which put extra stress on our friends who were putting decorations on the tables.
- Lackluster presentation of food - one of the cringe-worthy thing was the sauce for the pork chops being served from a beverage jug.
- I wanted rectangular table cloths for our rectangular tables and Upper Crust only had round table cloths so they agreed to order rectangular ones for us. On the wedding day I only saw the round table cloths. One of them was also missing (and we did have to pay to rent each table cloth).
