So I should preface this review with that I spent 8 years of my schooling in Baltimore, MD. I love the city. I used to visit the Walters Art Museum several times when I lived in the city. So when my husband and I were looking for venue spaces in the city (after having moved out of the area) I was so excited to come upon the Walters as a possibility. The sculpture courtyard is a truly elegant and beautiful space. Unfortunately they have only one coordinator who works about 15 hours a week. So if you don't have a full time wedding coordinator it is a HUGE pain to try to work with that one person to plan things for the space. It was literally a constant source of stress for me and my husband during the planning process. We literally had to call and leave multiple messages to even just PAY them the full deposit to use the space. All of our guests loved the space when all was said and done, but I'm not sure I would do it again, unless I had a full time coordinator to work out all the details with the venue. It just baffled me that we spent so much money on the space (it's not cheap) and you get such awful service. What's worse is that it was one of my favorite museums, I was more than happy to think of paying the fee to use the space as a donation/contribution to a place I loved so much. At the end of it all, it was just such a hassle. The coordinator even lost the contract we had signed to reserve the place (or she's not sure if she ever even sent it)....so we were signing that two weeks before the wedding. As with any alternative wedding venue, there are challenges. No in house kitchen, so catering company has to be able to deal with this, and will probably charge you extra, there was one storage space for flowers, decor prior to the reception but they wouldn't let you drop anything off until two hours prior to the reception time. The security staff they provide with the rental fee, were amazing and very nice. But literally almost everything else was a nightmare.

We could not have picked a better venue for our Wedding than The Walters Art Museum. If you've never been, the venue is absolutely stunning. The event staff was easy to work with and ensured a smooth event day. Our guests continue to rave about the setting and the ability to visit museum galleries as part of our wedding day. Highly recommend!

Wow! The Walters Art Museum was my dream venue and we made it a reality. The venue alone speaks for itself. Its stunning, elegant, sophisticated, and timeless. Heather Poff, events coordinator for the museum, was lovely to work with. She answered all my questions in a timely manner and I really felt at ease. The museum staff has weddings down to a perfect science. I was so impressed. The security team was lovely and were genuinely happy for my husband and I. Officer Harris escorted us around for photos before the ceremony. He was fantastic!! I am so happy we chose the Walters for both our ceremony and reception. The day turned out so much better than I could have ever imagined and I know I have Heather and her team at the Walters to thank for that. And even more props to Heather who was very pregnant at my wedding and stayed the entire day and night to make sure everyone and everything was taken care of for the wedding. If you are looking for a magical venue for your wedding, the Walters is it!!

I fell in love with the Walters the second I walked in! Not only is the sculpture garden elegant and stunning, it's totally different from any other venue in the area. All of our guests said it was one of the most beautiful weddings they had ever been to and the space provided an amazing backdrop for our pictures. Heather is awesome to work with and the only thing I would tell other couples to be aware of is that, because they're a museum, they do have some rules and restrictions other venues may not. But for us, it was 100% worth it!

The Walters Art Museum was a beautiful venue for our wedding. We wanted a unique venue and weren’t interested in getting married at a hotel or banquet hall. With venues in DC proving too expensive and not large enough, we set our search for Baltimore. The Walters was one of the few museum venues that could accommodate our guest count of right under 200 people and was also among the more affordable.
As others have mentioned, this venue has more rules than the usual wedding venue. This is not surprising as this is a museum first, and not designed to be solely a wedding venue. I actually appreciated that they maintain strict rules (no red wine except at dinner service, no standing tripods except during the ceremony). It confirmed that the Walters maintains the integrity of their role as a museum. It’s also good to keep in mind that despite their many rules, the Walters’ tries hard to work with you to fit your desires. We opted for a center stage for our ceremony which was a challenge considering our number of guests and the time needed for breakdown between the ceremony and reception. Heather was open to this and was a great resource to our staging and caterer vendors to ensure it actually worked. While I had a tough time getting in touch with Heather a few times early in the planning, the closer we got to the wedding, the more that she served as a God-send, really helping to ensure, particularly the day of, that our vendors could complete their tasks appropriately.
Keep in mind that rental of the venue is just that. You’ll supply the chairs, tables, staging, mics, caterer, etc. In the end, however, this is a venue that does the work for you in terms of décor. With the Walters beautiful artwork, columns, sculptures and sunroof, all you’ll need are pretty flowers and the right pin lighting to make it wedding ready. Our guests were beyond impressed and I really look forward to seeing how the golden hues of the museum’s evening lighting will be captured in our photos.

Ps- we have a lot of red wine drinkers in our family, and not one had a problem with the fact that you can only drink red wine during dinner!!

I had my wedding reception at the Walters. One reviewer said having their reception at the Walters was the best decision they made -- I could not agree more. I live closer to DC than Baltimore and originally looked at a few art galleries in DC. Due to budget, I decided to go with Walters. I definitely got more bang for my buck. Walters offers a large space, your guests have access to galleries, you don't need much for decorations, and you get plenty of time for your reception.

The Walters event coordinator, Heather Poff, was awesome. She is pretty busy but always responsive. She was at the museum on my wedding day and I'm sure her presence helped ensure that things went more smoothly.

I gave four stars on flexibility because Walters is a museum so there are a lot of rules. And, some things may have to go through an approval process. However, I never felt that the rules restricted anything I wanted to do and they made sense given the venue.

I would note that it was hard to hear the people who gave speeches. The acoustics for microphone use weren't great but the music (we had a DJ) was fine.

Overall, I am very happy with my decision to have my wedding reception at the Walters.

The Walters Art Museum was the most beautiful venue for our wedding. We did opt in for the lighting package, which I would highly recommend, as well. The entrance to the Sculpture Garden for the ceremony and then near an Adam & Eve wall sculpture is very dramatic and timeless. While I had a dream wedding, our coordinator at the museum told us of a potential crisis just two days before our event. You are not allowed more than 150 people in the map room because it is a violation of fire codes so we almost had to pay $1,100 to move our cocktail hour upstairs last minute. This is completely understandable; however this could have been avoided if we had known about the code and if we had been asked for a final headcount. In the end, the “crisis” was resolved and we didn’t need to move. In the end, we loved our venue but they could’ve been more proactive. Also, parking is a separate company so call the company directly rather than the manager of the lot across the street. I would still highly recommend this venue – it's too gorgeous to pass up!

The Walters Art Museum responded with the following comments:

It really was so wonderful working with you Jordan! I know the issue with the headcount was a shock and I am sorry about that. The spaces available for cocktail receptions are contingent on how many people can safely occupy that area. These capacity restrictions are discussed during all preliminary walk-throughs. Additionally, the rental fee structure for the Walters is also based on capacity due to the size of spaces available for each group. Agreements are drafted based on the above information and per the agreement, any change needs to be submitted in writing. I know it doesn't fix what happened, but it is important for me to note that I do try to be as transparent as possible regarding the rental of the Walters. Again, I am sorry about the added stress so close to your wedding day. I hate to think it left you with anything other than a wonderful memory of your wedding at the Walters.

I fell in love with many DC museum venues, but not the price tag. We lucked out in finding this gem that literally blew our guests away. They leave museum rooms open for your guests for the cocktail hour and reception, and the sculpture court is absolutely stunning. We couldn't be happier with this venue and have zero negative things to say about it. We worked with Heather Poff, the event coordinator, and she was great as well. We also go our uplighting through the venue and recommend it because it just added something extra. People kept asking us how we found such a beautiful venue and that they loved everything about the experience!

The Walters Art Museum was a beautiful venue for our wedding reception. We had a wonderful celebration that we will remember for a lifetime. My only critique since the Walters Art Museum was fantastic will hopefully only serve to improve the experience a miniscule more for a future client. This suggestion would be to have a point person at the museum available for each vendor to interact with upon arrival. We had multiple vendors arriving over a few hour time period, and perhaps we are at fault and should have found out in advance how to make this process seamless, but it seemed to possibly create some confusion among a few of our vendors. However, overall, as previously mentioned, our wedding was spectacular.
