We wanted a pretty simple wedding- and the Westin did a wonderful job of making our day more perfect than we pictured. We had 30 guests for the event. Our original wedding planner left the Westin 2 weeks before our wedding, which sounds disastorous, but it actually went seamlessly. Michelle was our wedding planner at the time of our wedding and she couldn't have been sweeter or more organized (Apparantly they have more than one event coordinator, because she was not new to the job). The day before the wedding we handed her boxes with lanterns and candles we had shipped for centerpieces along with some random decorating items that I forgot were even in there, and just asked her to make it look pretty. It looked amazing! She helped me take off my veil (which I anticipated completely messing up my hair in the proccess) and not a hair out of place. She also did a great job of keeping the wheels turning that day- asking us if we were ready for the toast, the cake cutting, first dances- and then making it happen. We had hoped to just sort of show up for our wedding and skip all the worrying about the details. Of course, there were some decisions we had to make beforehand, but that day, we did just show up and everything looked and went better than we imagined. The gazebo and beach area is even prettier than in the pictures, the food was delicious, and everyone was so friendly.

This was a wonderful site for our destination wedding and reception. We had a small group of friends and family (total of 19) that joined us with the majority staying at the Westin. First, they upgraded our rooms for us, free of charge. They went out of their way to be helpful and were incredibly friendly and professional.

Regarding our wedding coordinators, I cannot say enough nice things about Michelle and Sesyle!! They worked with us long distance via both emails and phone calls and everything was as promised. We sent several packages down 2 weeks early and they had it all safe and sound in their office and we able to use what we had sent easily to set up. While we did book our own vendors, but both of these lovely ladies gave good recommendations that were proven true! Thanks to Michelle and Sesyle, this destination wedding was no stress at all!!!!! They went above and beyond the call of duty!

The Venue was the gazebo down by the beach with a tent for the dinner and drinks. It was beautiful as the sun set that night!!! Beware of bugs, but that is part of the deal with getting married outside in August and to be honest, it was not bad at all! Everything was set up on time and even when it started to rain at the very end of the late night, the staff quickly got sides up on the tent even though the rain lasted only 10 minutes.

Regarding catering, The food was delicious. We did hor d'ouvres as well as a sit down dinner that included an incredible lobster and steak entre! Everything came out on time. The wait staff was friendly -- we even had one get up and dance a jig with us! As to the cake, while it was relatively standard, they did work with us to have a red velvet one that turned out beautiful along with the coral and shell icing and decorations.

KUDOS, Westin!

Michelle was an absolutely fantastic planner who exceeded all our expectations. Katrina, the sales representative, was also incredibly helpful, responsive, and supportive. The rest of the Westin staff were also tremendous. And a beautiful location, with a great layout in terms of the hotel rooms, pool, and beach that made it easy to socialize with our wedding guests.

The Westin St. John is showing it's age, but it's still a great place to stay while on the island. We didn't use the Westin for our venue, however many of our guests stayed there-- and they loved the place. It's convenient to town, and was very convenient to our chosen villa where our reception was held. The main reason they get a good review is their flexibility. One day after our wedding, a Category 2 hurricane (Omar, 2008) hit the island and we were under Martial Law. Many of the villas and hotels on the island shut down for the remainder of the week, leaving us stranded. The Westin stayed open, and managed to accommodate much of our party, and even had power when most of the island was without. The groups that stayed at the Westin were offered food for their rooms during the storm, as well as the usual meals in their restaurants. In all, if you're heading to St. John during the stormy season, I'd say give the Westin a look and book some rooms for your party.

The breath-taking beauty of St John overshadows any drawbacks of the wedding venue/services. The island of St. John was probably the most beautiful place I have ever been. I would totally go back again. The island and resort (Westin St. John) created a beautiful backdrop and exceeded my expectations.

The one major drawback, however, was the "cookie-cutter" wedding options the hotel gave you to pick from and the lack of flexibility in customizing anything. The hotel and wedding planner, Michelle, were a tad bit inflexible in certain areas and that bothered me some. More effort should be placed on going OUTSIDE of the box and doing something different, outside of the standard "package". Also, at a certain point, Michelle was not very "responsive" (at least not until I escalated her to the hotel director and marketing director).

The hotel photographer (Louis Lucas) was not good at all (unprofessional and the pictures were average, very average), and I noticed that the cake was rather TINY (I wish I had seen a precise picture of the cake before I chose it!) The guitarist was pleasant and friendly prior to the event, but on the day of, I was a little surprised that he left early and did not finish playing (even if it was past the allotted time). He didn't even bother to introduce himself to me..kind of weird....

But overall the venue was a pretty one, the "issues" I had with the venue were small in comparison to the wonderful time we had (and the fact that I brought my OWN photographer). The AWESOME hotel director (Dawn) and marketing director (Debbie) were MORE than supportive and attentive to us during the planning stages, as were the workers and staff at the hotel. So we left with very pleasant memories and a beautiful beautiful experience that I will always cherish!!!!

FYI - This was a destination wedding. My husband and I picked the venue about a year before the wedding, and planned the wedding through emails, conference calls, etc. All of the services came with the resort. We did not bring in any outside vendors.

Beauty & Health: The day before I had pedicures planned for my Maid of Honor and I. The Westin Spa did not have my reservations in the book, therefore the concierge called a local spa and sent us there. Honestly it was a pain. The local spa was nice, but we were so rushed that I didn't even have time to take a shower before my rehearsal dinner (yuck?)! The day of my wedding my Maid of Honor and I got scrubs and manicures. The spa services were good, however the spa is really tiny. Only one person can get a nail service done at a time.

Catering: The food was delicious. Everything came out on time. We also had a morning after brunch which was exceptional. The wait staff was really friendly for both.

Ceremony Music: We had a harpist for the ceremony, a Steel Drummer for the cocktail hour, and a DJ for the Reception. All of the music was wonderful and everything was setup on time and ready to go!

Ceremony Venue: We got married at the beach garden gazebo which was beautiful at sunset. However I recommend bringing bug spray.

DJ: The DJ was awesome! He took requests and did a fabulous job.

Flowers & Decor: All of the flowers (except the cake flowers, read below) were beautiful. My bouquet, Maid of Honor bouquet, table flowers, etc. The florist did an excellent job. Oh and if you get married at the gazebo I highly recommend the flower sconces on the gazebo - they were a really nice touch.

Officient: We had Rev. Philip Chalker. He was a very kind man. We met him several days before the wedding and discussed the ceremony. Everything went smoothly.

Photographer: This photographer was recommended by our wedding planner. We were also told that a picture list sheet was not necessary - that was very wrong. Our photographer was not good at directing people (for example: there were no shots taken of me and my maid of honor alone or my husband and his best man alone), and we were very displeased with 99% of our pictures. Some of the pictures were even taken at the wrong speed and were blurry and unusable. I would recommend bringing in a photographer.

Reception Venue: Same as our Ceremony Venue. All I can say is beautiful! Day and Night!

Wedding Cake: The cake came with our "package deal", so we weren't expecting anything special. We picked from square/circle, type of cake, type of frosting, type of layer, and if we wanted flowers or not. The cake overall tasted and looked fine, except for the flowers. We paid extra for the flowers and I could have done a better job myself. It looked like someone chopped the head off of some white roses and they were placed on top of the cake. Don't spend the extra money on flowers!

Wedding Planning: My husband and I were very, very displeased with our wedding coordinator. I was irritated from the beginning because our wedding coordinator never told us prior to our arrival that the resort was undergoing major renovations (they were putting in new timeshare villas, and putting bathrooms in next to the pool). We should have received a discount on everything. We honeymooned at the same resort and tried to relax despite the loud cranes and hammering going on everywhere around us. Anyway, as for the wedding coordinator, we would have to tell her everything multiple times. We would send her emails with questions in bullet format, and she would answer one of about 5 questions. She seemed very disorganized. Make sure you have EVERYTHING documented in email, phone calls go in one ear and out the other. We mailed packages to the resort a month and a half before the wedding and when we got there she told us she never received the package, however once she actually looked for it - surprise she found it.... The only reason we did not complain is that the day of the wedding, everything went pretty smoothly. Although our family members asked why our wedding coordinator couldn't even crack a smile on our wedding day. Luckily, I didn't let it bother me - there are way more important things in life!
