Real Wedding - Christina + Ted

Posted on November 5th, 2008 by Margaret. Filed under Luxe for Less, Real Weddings.

When I got an email from Christina, I just couldn’t wait to share her AMAZING story. Christina, AKA Mrs.E2B, planned her wedding on Project Wedding for… drum roll please… less than $10K in the Los Angeles area. Christina was so generous to share her wedding photos with us, and her real wedding is now featured in our real weddings gallery! Here’s a teaser for Christina and Ted’s real wedding … make sure to check out the full editorial spread!

I was floored when Christina told me that she was able to plan her wedding for less than $10K in one of the most expensive areas in the country! Christina was so kind to share some of her tips and advice on how she pulled off a luxurious wedding:

We are both in our 40’s, divorced with 2 kids each.  We met on Yahoo personals.  He was looking for someone to see a movie with, I was curious about who was out there for me. He found me his first day on, I had been on for about 3 weeks.  His profile didn’t have a picture yet and I almost deleted him because I was getting hundreds of emails a day.  The only reason I looked is because he was  Libra like me.  Our birthdays are October 8 and 9.  I sent him a reply and asked for his picture.  The moment I saw it I knew he was the man I was going to marry. We met for the first time 5 days later on January 19, 2007 at the driving range in Moorpark. We fell in love immediately. We got married across the street at the Golf Club on June 29, 2008.

We have 4 beautiful children, 6,8,10 and 12. 2 boys and 2 girls.  Yes, we are called the Brady Bunch (am I dating myself???) LOL  He graduated from law school in May of 2007 and we are trying to pass the bar exam this time around!  I am a self employed interior designer.

The reception with food and alcohol and tip was $4,000.00. The vendor started at $55.00 a plate for the food. I told him I had $25.00 to spend.  We had beer and wine and a cash bar for hard alcohol. We had Tri-tip and BBQ with mac and cheese…it was a midwest feast (I am from West Virginia my husband is from Wisconsin)  I found my $1500.00 dress for $200.00 on E-bay, and it didn’t need altered. It was beautiful. The tent draping fabric was $1.00 a yard downtown.  The flower girl dresses were $15.00 each, US Angels at Marshalls!  They usually sel for $100.00 new. The votives were from Ikea, the cylinder vases I found at Home Goods, Ross and Marshalls over a 5 month period. They were $8.00 a piece and I sold them after for $10.00 and they were still cheaper than wholesale!

I bargained with the photographer. DJ, Florist, venue, etcetc….The fabric for the runners (gorgeous) was $5.00 a yard, I had them made by an upholsterer in Simi Valley for nothing. 3 yards of fabric for 2 runners.  I worked really hard but on the day of, when I saw the tent for the first time, I cried.  It was stunning and I had created it for next to nothing as far as weddings go!  Our entire flower bill was $1000.00 for 10 centerpieces, 9 bouquets, 8 bouts. Mine was gorgeous!!!

We got married on  Sunday but June is still high wedding month.  This wedding would have cost 3 times as much if I hadn’t been so resourceful.  And thanks to your online network, I was able to find so many ideas!

Congratulations to Christina + Ted. It is great seeing a wedding showcased which does not cost the earth. Where there is a will there is a way - especially when the parties are prepared to be creative and do a lot of leg work. In these credit crunch times one of the easiest ways to cut your costs is to not get married on a Saturday and to think last minute. You really do not need 12 months to plan a wedding.

And hooray for ebay. Where would we be without it.
