DIY: A Silver Leaf Tray

Posted on January 6th, 2011 by Jeannie. Filed under Do It Yourself.

Metal leaf, which comes in gold, silver, copper and other tones can be used to give a realistic metal luster to a range of objects you might want to incorporate in your wedding decor. This inexpensive serving tray is renewed with a silver leaf finish. Here’s the how-to from Olivia over at A Field Journal:

Most craft stores carry all the materials needed for metal leafing. You will need sheets of metal leaf (they come in gold, silver, copper and other color variations), a brush-on metal leaf adhesive, and metal leaf sealer (these come in both brush-on and spray-on varieties). For application you will need a soft brush - both a foam brush or a synthetic-bristled brush work fine.

Begin by brushing on a thin, even coat of adhesive. Most adhesives require 30-60 minutes of dry time, before you begin to apply the silver leaf (read the manufacturer’s instructions on your specific adhesive to be sure). When the glue is clear and tacky, you are ready to move onto the next step.

Apply silver leaf by placing it face down on the surface being covered; rub very lightly over the area to be sure the leaf is adhered, then remove the backing paper. If necessary, use a clean, dry brush to smooth down the silver leaf. Apply the next sheet, slightly overlapping the edges. Continue until the surface is completely covered. Brush away any loose silver leaf. Be sure to save any silver leaf remaining on the backing sheets and use to touch up any missed spots.

The final step is to brush on the sealer to protect the new finish. Let dry and enjoy!

[...] Happy New Year I hope you had a wonderful time ringing in the new year! For New Year’s Eve I made three simple projects that can easily be adapted for other celebrations. Glittered Banner: For the banner I printed text onto sturdy paper and cut out. Bold, sans-serif fonts work best for this, the font used here is called Market Deco. When cutting out the letters, be sure to leave small tabs at the top for hanging. I gave each letter a base coat of silver paint, brushed with white glue and applied glitter. When dry I folded the tab over embroidery floss and glued in place. For additional projects, please click to keep reading.Fringed Noisemakers: This is just a simple alteration of store-bought noisemakers which can be easily disassembled and recovered with the paper of your choice using spray adhesive. I added a homemade tissue paper fringe to the ends. To make fringe, cut strips of tissue paper about 3 inches wide (cut several layers at once to make things easier). Layer about 25 strips on top of each other and stitch down the center (by machine). Make a series of snips perpendicular to the stitch along both sides of the tissue paper strip. Your snips should be 1 cm or so apart. When done cutting, glue around the opening of the noisemaker and gently fluff the tissue paper layers.Silver Leaf Tray: To corral confetti, clocks, champagne glasses and noisemakers I used a bargain metal tray, redone with a silver leaf finish.
