Liz + Josh: A Color-Infused Minnesota Wedding by Tiffany Bolk Photography
Posted by Sarah Zlotnick. Filed under Real Weddings

Today we have a special weekend treat for you. We’ve been saving this fun and colorful Minnesota wedding for a fun and colorful day, and Cinco de Mayo weekend seemed like just the ticket (especially because the couple’s first trip to Mexico had a big influence on their décor choices). From handmade paper flowers to a surprise dance performance, the personal touches in Liz and Josh’s special day absolutely blew us away. We love the way they turned their unique love story into a celebration of different cultures, and the fact that so many friends and family members helped with putting on the fête is a true testament to the DIY ethos. Thanks a million to the talented Tiffany Bolk for sharing these photos with us! We’re in awe of the vibrancy.

Liz and Josh got to know each other while working at a small Chinese restaurant in college. On slow nights, they’d pass the hours talking. “There is some question about whether our first ‘date’ was a date or not,” says the bride.  “But we had so much fun together we just never stopped hanging out.” It was on a later trip to Mexico (their first big vacation) that the couple discovered they didn’t ever really get sick of one another. So Josh asked Liz to move in with him before they got back to the states.

The bright and colorful wedding was a mash-up of tributes to the Mexican and Chinese “roots” of Liz and Josh’s relationship. Because red symbolizes love in China and a rope is tied around couples in Mexico, the bridal party threw a red ribbon over the couple during the ceremony. At the reception, they strung Mexican Papel Picado bunting and Chinese paper lanterns from the ceiling. Josh’s mother created the paper flower centerpieces as well as the ‘Marriage is for All Love Birds’ sign, and the couple designed the graphic invitation themselves.

At the end of the night, the couple surprised their guests with one last Chinese tradition: lion dancers! It was an energetic finish to a fun-filled night, and Liz could not be happier with the way it turned out. “We figured if you have good music, good food and drink, and good people, it will all turn out great,” she says. “And it did!” Thanks again to Tiffany Bolk for sharing the day with us!
