{Vintage-Inspired Star Cake Toppers}

When painted pretty, a humble wooden ball craft supply becomes a show stopper ready to brighten up any reception! Here’s how to make this simple, crafty cake stand.

Materials needed: Wooden balls available at any local craft store (we used 2 inch balls), acrylic paint colors, foam brushes (one per color), wood glue, glass plates.

Step One: Paint each of balls with wood craft paint. Be sure to wear gloves- it’ll get messy!

Step Two: Allow balls to dry overnight and give yourself an extra day to touch up the side that each ball rested on.

Step Three: Combine the balls in formations of your choosing to showcase your desserts. Once you have your formations, use wood glue to adhere. Let dry according to glue directions. We combined five as a base for each cake stand, the second layer had four and the top layer had three. Vary your heights and colors for an appealing display.

Step Four: Top each stand with a glass plate and your dessert! Since our cakes were monochromatic the brightly colored balls looked splendid. If your desserts will be of varied in color, you could easily substitute for a more neutral paint palette.

Step Five: As your desserts are enjoyed, more of the color will show through the plates and the sweet table will look even more whimsical and fun as the night wears on.

Fancy desserts and creative bunting just might be my two favorite things… put them together and, well, you know… I go weak at the knees.  The brilliant minds at Paper Stories (a Chicago-based boutique and letterpress company) came up with this gorgeous spread, featuring their custom ribbon bunting.

In honor of Kate and William, one of my favorite people in the world, Amanda at i am baker, created this lovely cake - as an ode to all of you princesses out there. She combined elements from her hydrangea cake and rose cake for this look, and I absolutely love it!

I get so excited about discovering new creative blogs out there, and Amelie’s House is simply amazing! Her blog about “baking, making and creating” has inspired me so I thought I’d share some of her brilliance with you.

I don’t know where I’ve been … but I just discovered the fabulous Down Under venture Cake Ink - who provide not only stationery for your event but the perfectly matching cake as well. What a brilliant concept! Besides that, their cakes and displays are absolutely drool-worthy. Here are some of their recent winners!!! (as Charlie Sheen would say) for me:

I just love the mexican bird bunting and color scheme!

This is called a “Moroccan style” Australian Christmas … whatever it is, the color palette, patterns and cake are all precious.

Besides their moist texture, bundt cakes are eternally cute and these chocolate mini’s specifically are just beautiful! Chelsea Fuss put this dessert display together for us, and I think it would be stunning to serve this to party guests. I am also absolutely struck with this chocolate brown and orange color palette.
