Anna and Travis were married in the bride’s parents’ backyard in Alpena, Mich. on July12. The bride looked radiant in a beaded cap sleeve gown with a side braid and a beaded crystal hairpiece. She carried a bouquet of ivory roses, two-tone chrysanthemums, waxflower, and bay leaves. Her ‘maids donned short sage green chiffon dresses with various necklines. The groom looked dapper in a dark suit and a navy blue tie, and his men looked handsome in gray vested suits with blue-checkered shirts and navy neck ties. “Getting married at my childhood home in northern Michigan was the most meaningful decision I made while planning this wedding,” Anna said. “I had had so many wonderful memories in my life with growing up in the woods, and this would be another one to add.” Anna and Travis’ ceremony was filled with sentimental homemade touches. The path leading to the ceremony was lined with wooden signs that denoted how close they were to the ceremony site, which was on the front lawn overlooking Thunder Bay River. When guests arrived they were encouraged to pick a seat, not a side by a framed chalkboard sign. They were given ceremony programs which served double-duty as fans. The 100 guests took their seats in white folding chairs, and watched as an adorable flower girl and ring bearer made their way down the aisle. Anna and Travis exchanged vows under a beautiful birch arbor that the groom and his father made together. “Standing on the river’s edge with the breeze blowing, the birds chirping, and even some canoes riding by while I stared into my husband’s eyes was probably my favorite part of the day,” Anna noted. After they officially tied the knot, guests were occupied by lawn games and cocktail hour as the bridal party went off to take pictures. Guests were given mason jars to fill up with mock mojitos, peach bellinis, or iced tea. At the reception, guests picked up succulent escort cards, and were given individual lunchboxes with a gourmet sandwich and other sides inside. They sat at round tables with white linens and burlap table runners. Each table featured a mercury glass vase with wildflowers and blue mason jars. “I had decided to make this amazing pinwheel backdrop for behind the head table at the reception…the end result became one of the most talked about pieces at our wedding. It was totally worth the effort,” Anna said. For dessert, the groom’s grandmother made three different flavored cakes including a carrot cake, adorned with a topper featuring the couple; a lemon-thyme cake, topped with lemon slices; and a naked cake, topped with berries. The night ended setting off fireworks and sparklers, an appropriate touch for the weekend right after July 4. Anna’s best planning advice? “Don’t over do it. Sometimes simple is better,” Anna said. Paul + Joe: Purple Intimate Backyard Wedding in New York by Jayd Gardina Photography

Paul and Joe were married at their private residence in East Hampton, New York on September 13. One groom looked dapper in a black fitted suit and light purple tie, while the other looked just as handsome in a gray checkered suit and dark blue tie. The 65 guests in attendance sat in brown chiavari chairs with navy blue padding and burlap ribbon . “We really love our home in East Hampton and have put a lot of love and effort into the landscaping,” Paul explained. The ceremony was performed by their yoga instructor and both grooms read personal vows, which prompted a few tears from guests. A trio from the Julliard School of Music played as well. After they officially tied the knot, they hosted the reception right in their backyard! Guests sat at three different rectangular banquet tables covered in navy blue denim linens and featured hurricane lanterns and floral arrangements as centerpieces. The nearby pool had white mums floating in it, and candles around the perimeter. “Our backyard was a beautiful setting to celebrate our special event,” Paul said. After the filling family-style dinner, guests were treated to a three tier cake topped with two Adirondack chairs and other beachy elements. Tartlets and cookies were also available. Their best advice for couples on their wedding day? “Be in the moment and make sure to take time to enjoy the event privately as a couple,” he said. “Occasionally step away from the guests so you can savor and remember the incredibly special occasion.” See the full board here.

Laura and Daniel were married at the groom’s parent’s backyard in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada on September 14. “We wanted our wedding to be relaxed and fun,” Laura said. The bride wore a sweetheart lace a-line wedding gown with a keyhole back, accessorized with an ivory sash and fingertip-length veil, while the groom kept it casual with a white button-up shirt, vest, dark-washed jeans, accessorized with no tie. Notice her cowboy boots? Bridesmaids wore mix ‘n’ matched short mint green and teal dresses and carried bouquets of roses, berries, eucalyptus seeds, and baby’s breath. Fun fact: All of the floral arrangements were created by Quik Pik Flowers, where Laura works. “I wanted the ceremony backdrop to be of the mountains and open field because those are two things that we really love being surrounded by,” she said. “All 165 of our guests were people we were so happy to be surrounded with.” Following, guests were directed to the tented reception through a pair of repurposed barn doors and escorted to their seats via cards on clothespins. In lieu of a traditional guest book, well wishes were written on pieces of paper and placed inside a metal watering can. Tables were decorated with white linens, burlap runners, mason jar centerpieces atop wooden slices, chalkboard table numbers, and family photos. “We had an open mic, which was very successful and brought out a lot of great improvisational speeches that were so heartwarming,” Laura said. Later on, the newlyweds performed a special dance to “Proud Mary.” And they got it on video too! See the full board here.

Angel + Jerry: A Whimsical Pastel Summer Wisconsin Backyard Wedding By Laurelyn Savannah Photography

Angel and Jerry were married at the bride’s parent’s home in Fennimore, Wis. on June 22. “The inspiration for the wedding actually came a lot from Pinterest,” Angel said. “I chose a pastel color scheme of pinks, whites, creams, and a little bit of greens and purples.” The bride wore a blush dropped waist wedding gown with a beaded bodice, accessorized with no shoes in lieu for henna, while the groom wore a pale blue button-up shirt, gray pants, suspenders, and a skull bow tie. Bridesmaids wore white long chiffon dresses and carried bouquets of baby’s breath. Guests were directed to the backyard ceremony with a wooden arrow sign post and greeted with a chalkboard sign that encouraged to pick a seat not a side. “OH MY! It was beautiful, the sun was out, the birds were chirping, and both the best man and maid of honor forgot the rings,” she said. “Thankfully, we didn’t have to go far.” To symbolize their unity, the couple chose to do a handfast in front of a paper crane altar arrangement. “Afterwards, we had enough time to snap a couple of photos before one of the biggest rain storms of the year hit,” Angel said. The tented reception was decorated with lace balloons and cafe string lights from the ceiling, but the tables were decorated with white linens, vintage china, and tree stump centerpieces that featured pillar candles. Our favorite detail? The ice cream bar with all the toppings! Yum. See the full board here.
