Sarah’s Best of Bridal Market: Day 1
Posted by Sarah Zlotnick. Filed under Bridal Market Fall 2014

Dress Designer (clockwise from top left): Theia

Well, in case you can’t tell by our Instagram feed (not following us there? you really should!) — New York Bridal Market is officially here! We kicked off the week with Theia, which never disappoints. Designer Don O’Neill is always sure to incorporate something for the Katherine Hepburn bride (Hellooo, gorgeous pantsuit), and the rest of his gowns were flirty, interesting and fun. Gold fabrics and heavily-beaded embellishments figured prominently on his “Midas Touch” runway. We loved the way each dress felt like it had been created for a specific character or type of woman. Try as we might to pick just one dress, the collection in total was a highlight.

Dress Designer (clockwise from top left): David’s Bridal

Next, on to the wonderful world of David’s Bridal! A bridal company as big as David’s puts a lot thought into what they put out each season, so when they say something will be a trend, we really listen. So, what’s on their radar? Making it super easy for bridesmaids to go ombre by offering different hues of the same shade, particularly in mint and blush. Also cool: their return to “modern coverage.” While past seasons have been all about strapless and sweetheart necklines, David’s was the first to articulate what we’ve been looking forward to for a while now: a resurgence of more interesting ways to cover up skin on top. These looks are perfect for the bride who both wants something a bit more intricate out of her wedding day portraits.

Jewelry Designer (from left to right): Miriam Haskell

No good Market day is complete without some pretty baubles, and Miriam Haskell definitely delivered on that front. From her muted gold Jackie O collection to some insider scoop on Michelle Obama’s favorite ways to wear the heirloom-inspired designs (Hint: Think statement earrings, the designer definitely had First Ladies on the brain. And, when you think about it, presidential ain’t a bad way to go on your wedding day — all eyes will be on you, after all!

Dress Designer (clockwise from top left): Monique Lhuillier

Finally, the beauty that was Monique’s Secret Garden. Monique Lhuillier is a favorite each season, but we’re sure we’re not the only ones who think she went about and beyond for Fall 2014. Presented in a mystical garden setting blooming with lush greenery (check out that arch!), the gowns were floaty, feminine, and detailed extremely delicately. After seeing this collection, we now realize that there’s fit for a princess, and then there’s fit for a Monique girl. Everything was simply breathtaking.

Trends are hard to predict from only one day of shows, but the emphasis on all-over beadwork at both Monique Lhuillier and Theia make us think this just may be the season of the (subtly) blinded out bride.

On the docket today: Badgley Mishcka, Temperely London, the JLM Couture Collections, Marchesa, and Vera Wang. Be sure to check back here tomorrow AM for a recap of those collections! (And if you can’t wait until then, follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for as-they-happen updates).
