DIY Wednesday: Peony Bouquet
Posted by Kate. Filed under DIY Wednesday, Do It Yourself

We’re such suckers for peonies.. In all of their fluffy fullness, they’re just the perfect spring/summertime wedding flower.  And get this: we made this white peony bridal bouquet for under $20!  Here’s how:

Materials: 5 Stems of Peonies (purchased at Whole Foods, 12.99 per pk) • Dusty Miller (purchased at local garden center) • Floral Tape • Ribbon • 2 Pearl Pins • Scissors

Step One. Crisscross two stems of peonies and add two stems of dusty miller. Give the stems a turn and add two more stems of peonies and dusty miller..give the stems one last turn and add the last peony. Make any adjustments as needed.

Step Two. Hold the bouquet in front of a mirror to see if you are happy with the look and feel of your design.

Step Three. Wrap the stems with floral tape, then trim the bottoms of the stems to the desired length

Step Four. Wrap your choice of ribbon around the stems and secure the ribbon in place with one pearl pin in the back and one in the front of the handle.

There you have it…a pretty white peony bouquet for under $20.00!

DIY Wednesday: Nature-Inspired Bouquet
Posted by Kate. Filed under DIY Wednesday, Do It Yourself

By: Brittni Mehlhoff

Flowers are often an intimidating task for brides to tackle, and bouquets are known as being the trickiest of them all. The good news is, it’s actually more doable than you might guess and you don’t have to spend a fortune on fancy blooms to make it look great.  Try this simple technique and you’ll be putting together a beautiful, nature-inspired bouquet in no time.

Materials: bells of ireland • wax flowers • proteas • scissors • ribbon • rubber band or twine

Step One • Start by removing excess leaves from the bottoms of the stems.

Step Two • Next, gather a couple of the larger blooms and criss cross the stems as you hold them in one hand. Then, place the grouping (about 4-6 stems) on a flat surface.

Step Three • Continue adding additional stems on top of what you already have laid out on your flat surface.

Step Four • Once you’ve reached a desired fullness, grab the stems just under the blooms and hold them up. Make adjustments to the flowers to ensure the bouquet is round and full, taller in the center, and shorter around the periphery.

Step Five • Using a rubber band or twine, secure the finished bouquet, and add a decorative ribbon to complete the arrangement.

Posted by Kate. Filed under Bridesmaids, DIY Wednesday, Do It Yourself

One recent, lazy summer weekend I was puttering around the house after my weekly trip to the farmer’s market.  Up in Oregon, there are the best local florals at the market.  I buy ‘em by the bunches to brighten up the house.  On this particular weekend I scooped up two bunches of bright snapdragons at $5 per piece and a few stems of loose strife.  I thought they would make for very sweet, inexpensive bridesmaid bouquets.  So there I went, trying my hand at pulling together a little bouquet…. if I can do it, you can definitely do it!  Here’s a little how-to I put together and a few things I learned along the way…  Read the rest of this entry »
