This was taken from his version on our wedding website. The last sentence always makes me cry. Here you go:
This was certainly a challenge for me (and I am not talking about writing this little piece either)! As Jodie said, it was no secret that we would get engaged at some point and I was hearing about it from all angles. The problem was, that I wanted to not be obvious about it, and if I did something out of the norm, she would see right through me. Well, I am a sneak :-)!
I had been looking at rings all this year, and I knew what I thought she would like. Eventually, I needed her size and an idea of whether I was in the ball park with her thoughts about what she wanted. There was not a chance that I was going take her to show me things, as she probably would have ended up with something that she showed me, and I was not about to do that. I wanted the ring to be as special as she is and I am pretty sure I hit the nail on the head with my choice!
Now the hard part, suprising her! My mind was working overtime for weeks while I had that sparkling thing in my possesion. Outside, or inside? Public, or private? How and when? I had it with me on a few occasions in case the perfect moment came up, but it never did. I can honestly say that I was frustrated. Finally, after I had thought that she was feeling better (sorry about that one darling), I figured out a quirky, and perfect way to get her. It was something that I would do, not something contrived from other's ideas.
As I wandered around the yard collecting the perfect flowers, I was nervous. It is not that I ever had a worry about the answer, but I wanted her to like it. I carefully hung up my suprise and of course, had that empty box there. I could not resist having her think that I was playing a joke on her after all the ribbing coming from each and every direction (and yes, Carrie, I did secretly like it)!
When she came in, the look on her face was priceless! I succeeded in my suprise! Even better, was the smoke coming out of her ears, when she saw the empty box with a "Gotcha" note. I could not let that last, of course, so I got up off the couch and pulled the ring from my pocket. She was saying yes before I hit one knee, and I guess it threw me off slightly. I honestly do not know exactly what I said, but neither does Jodie so it does not matter :-)! What matters is that I have the woman I love, the best gal for me, and a partner for life. Who could ask for anything more!!!
Ben asked me to get my finger sized in early March. We had been talking about getting engaged and married for so long, I knew it was impending. I do have to say Ben has the best sense of humor of anyone I know. For months, my matron of honor Carrie, hounded him relentlessly and humorously through facebook about proposing to me. My mother and I certainly weren't much of a relief to him either.
He & I both knew if he did anything elaborate, I would quickly figure things out. He knew he needed to catch me off guard. And that he did!
On one of the hottest days of the year, I worked at Lucas Vineyards on Sunday, April 26th. I pulled into the driveway a little after 7pm to find the door closed and wondered why he would have it closed on such a hot night. I got out of my car and walked into the house to find him sitting on the couch with a serious look on his face. I then noticed a piece of string hanging from the light fixture inside the door.
On the string, was a yellow piece of paper that read, Suprised? Looking down further, there was a small box tied to the string. And even further down was a bunch of freshly picked daffodils (from our yard). I looked at him in surprise and said, "What's this?"
Of course I snatched up the box and opened it to find a little note in it that said, "gotcha." Then, I looked at him as he sat on the couch and said (with a smile), "Oh, you're a jerk.....you are a jerk!"
He then got up and took the ring out of his pocket as he walked towards me. He got down on one knee and before he got any words out of his mouth, I said "Yes". He mumbled something about wanting to spend the rest of his life with me blah, blah, blah. Really....I don't remember what he said! :-)
Now we are planning for our special day!
