How We Met

Jeremy and I first met back in February 2009.  We met through a mutual friend, who I just happened to be engaged to at the time.  He was home on leave from the Navy before he got sent to Afghanistan.  I knew from the moment I met him that he and I were going to be friends.  He was funny, outgoing, and sarcastic….. and the best man in my 2010 wedding.

I only saw him the night of the party at his parents’ house and after that he was back to California before heading to Afghanistan.  He and I kept in contact but it was once or twice a month by phone when he’d call to talk to my fiancé and a few emails here and there to just check in and let us know he was still safe.

That September, during the process of buying a home and planning a wedding, my fiancé changed his mind about getting married and went back home on a Friday night.  Jeremy had since returned from Afghanistan and was on his way back home from ending his time with the Navy.

The Monday following, Jeremy called me because he needed a ride from his grandparent’s house, who live near where I work, to his house.  We got on the topic of dogs and that I knew someone who was selling lab puppies and that I could get him in contact with that person.  (Jeremy’s lab of 12 years passed away while he was overseas.) So for the next 2 days he and I looked at lab puppies until he finally picked one.  That Saturday he asked me to hit the bar with him and his cousin and his cousin’s wife.  We had a great time just hanging out and talking.  And we have been together every day since, aside from a few hunting trips he’s taken.

We kept our relationship under wraps at first because we weren’t sure if it was going to go anywhere or it was just a fling.  People seem to like to make our story more scandalous than it is.  He didn’t steal me from my ex nor was he any reason for our breakup.  We lost some friends through the process and have learned some lessons as to who true friends are.

I never used to believe in that whole “soul mate” theory but I know deep down inside I was meant to be with him.  We’ve gone through so many different things together and I wouldn’t change anything.  We have so much fun together and he is truly my best friend.  He’s the only guy I know that would drive me 2 hours to look at a horse for my niece and then haul it home.  He’s taken me to the Equine Affaire for a vacation when he doesn’t really care for horses.  But he’ll trail ride with me when I ask and do anything for me in regards to those horses.  Our preference is to be doing anything together, whether it is cleaning the house, 4-wheeling, or taking long weekend trips.

Our way of meeting wasn’t the easiest but they do say, things happen for a reason and I honestly believe if I hadn’t met my ex, I never ever would have met Jeremy and for that experience I’m thankful, no matter the heartache it brought.
