9-11 related, flight 93 memorial site

Since today is the anniversary I thought I'd post some pictures of the flight 93 site we went to last yr. The new memorial was started after we had been there so these pics are of the temp. one. Thousands of people visit it daily. Dh and I had gone to Johnstown for the bike rally that weekend and we stayed in Somerset, Pa. Shanksville is between them so we took a little side trip. What an errie feeling, driving threw the small country roads to get to this farmers field. Once you turn on the long driveway and saw everything you get goosebumps and this weird feeling inside of you. If you never have been there, you really should go.Since today is the photo 3132483-1Since today is the photo 3132483-2Since today is the photo 3132483-3Since today is the photo 3132483-4Since today is the photo 3132483-5Since today is the photo 3132483-6

What are all the clothes? Were they part of the passengers' luggage on the flight?

No, that is all kinds of things people left there as they visited, hats, tshirts, pins, patches etc. they way of leaving something of theirs there. Tons of fire depts, police, boy/girl scouts, biker groups etc.

As horrible as all the events of 9/11 were, I am always particularly moved by the stories of Flight 93.  I just keep asking myself whether I would have had the courage to do what they did...sacrificing themselves to subvert a greater evil. Thank you for those men and women.  And thank you for sharing this.

FI lives in Central City (about 5 mins from the Flight 93 site).  Our new house borders the Flight 93 National Memorial property.  Yep...hits WAY too close to home...  It also doesn't help that I work in the pre-hospital field, as well as a local emergency department.  Just puts a national spotlight on what first responders do and how much we DON'T get paid.  If we did it for the money, there would be nobody at the fire, EMS, and police stations ;-)

I couldn't agree more, SanFran! Fox was doing a special on Flight 93 this morning while I was getting ready. It was so hard to not start crying when the widows and widowers were talking about the last words they heard from their husbands and wives. I'd like to think that if I knew I'd die either way I'd be able to make that decision but I hope I'm never faced with it. It's amazing what they did, and how their loved ones talk about it now.

Oh yea, 20/20 had a "where are they now" special on the families that lost mothers or fathers... One womans message was unbelievable. It would have been so hard to have to recieve that call from a spouse!
