A Prison Wife?

So last night I couldn't sleep and was channel surfing and came across a new show called "Prison Wives" (I watched 3, 1 hour long episodes) and it's a show about women who are married to men in prison for life!  Some were either married before the husbands got locked up and some married the men after meeting them in jail.

I mean these men are NEVER getting out of jail! In one episode the woman met the guy in jail, and they got married, he is in jail for murdering his ex-wife's mother.  But his current wife kept saying things like "He is such the sweetest man, and I don't know why they are calling him a monster" and he wanted her to change his step childrens last name to his, she also found her mother a "pen pal" in jail, and her mother ended up marrying him!  Everytime these guys got moved to different prisons, the lady's would end up moving to be closer to the prisons so they could visit....

Ladies, would you be able to do this?

I wouldn't be able to do this -- I don't think I would put myself in a situation where this would even be possible.  I need WAY too much attention -- seriously I'm high maintenance when it comes to attention and if he were in jail, I really don't think I could be happy.

I kept watching, like "are they serious", one episode was about a lady, who was married to this guy, and his ex-wife kept harrassing them, they ended up going on the Jerry Springer show!  Anyhow, he ended up killing the ex-wife, so now the current wife, is claiming he is innocent, and she drives all of these miles to see him, and sleeps in her car on the side of the road, so she can be the first person in line for visits. She was losing her job, but yet she was still putting money in his commissary! Just craziness!!

I don't think I could do it, they are NEVER getting out!

I can understand marrying someone, and maybe trying to stick it out while he's in jail (if I KNEW he was innocent), but I just can't imagine marrying someone that's already IN jail! Of course, I have no idea how I'd even meet this guy - I'm scared to walk down the street at night in my quiet neighborhood, there's no way I'm walking into a prison looking for a date.

To each their own, I guess...

These women, were crying, stressed out, didn't have money to even put food on the table for their kids, but they always made a way to get gas to drive hours and hours to visit these men, I just don't understand it...God forbid, FI ever gets into a situation, I would love him to death, but I could not possibly wait for someone who will never see nothing but prison walls, what am I waiting for?  I know FI would want me to move on.

I think some of these women like the fact that they know where these men are every night- they have the upper hand because of where he is.

My daughter's father went to prison when she was very young and I dropped him like a hot potato... HELL NO!!  He is a loser.

Not a chance.  There's no way I would ever start something with someone in that kind of situation.

I have no idea what I would do if I was married and my husband was convicted of a crime and given a life sentence.  That would definitely be the "worse" in "for better or worse".

edited to add:  He's a really good law-abiding guy and I can't imagine that scenario ever happening.

That's a little different Jes, he eventually got out, so I could possibly see myself waiting,  but these men are "lifers".

That is crazy!  No way would I marry someone in jail, especially someone who did something bad enough to get life.  I know that marriage is supposed to be through good and bad times, but if bad times included my husband doing something to get a long prison sentence (especially life), I would consider that worse than the bad times I signed up for because he did that to himself on purpose.  I'd be out!

I definitely wouldn't marry someone who I met after he was in jail. I would try to stay with my dh if he were sent to jail for something that I knew he didn't do.

I've heard that really high profile killers- usually serial killers- have tons of pen pals. And some of their pen pals send them expensive gifts- TVs and other stuff. I don't get it, but I guess it is what floats their boat.

and....I don't think I would wait for someone who murdered someone...because if you "snapped" out once, what's to say you won't "snap" out on me.

I agree.  I mean, if there was an accident, that would be different.  But not if they did something with intent.

I think that some people find the strength they need to deal with situations like this in the love and satisfaction they get from these relationships.

It takes all kinds, kudos to all those who have found what they want and are happy, no matter what it is that makes them so. It doesn't hurt me any!
