Advice for picking photographers?

So today I went to a bridal show and was on the hunt for photographers. The prices are overwhelming and so are the options. Any advice on how better to narrow the selections after you've weeded out the photographers you do and don't like the looks of? Anything I should be aware of in those bundled package deals? Wary of multiple photographers or video/photography packages? I saw lots of awesome people and also lots of image editing heavy photographers (to my dismay) so I'm hoping to get more education and figured I'd ask you experienced ladies your opinions. :)

Budget and style of photography is definitely important when looking for a photographer. I would find out if you “own” the rights to your pics. I.e. if you will receive a USB or a CD with your photos (without a watermark) so you can post online, make copies etc.

Some companies want you to order prints only from them and wont allow you to have the rights. Others don’t care as much as long as you give them credit (like sourcing on here) if you post them online etc…depends if the business is the photography or the printing. Also if there is an additional charge for the cd.

Good to know –

  • Amount of time Inc in package and how much per hour if you need them longer
  • If there is a second shooter or just the one
  • Can you give a list of specific shots you want
  • If they charge mileage or extra when changing locations ie house to ceremony, to  photo shoot to  reception venue…
  • If they have a back up photographer in case of emergency i.e. the photographer gets sick, has an accident etc…
  • How long it will take for you to get your photos. I have seen girls wait months (close to a year)  for any pics…it can be quite brutal.
  • If they are working on any other events the same day as your wedding….could cause conflict/timing etc…

I can’t think of anymore lol

Good luck

Thank you so much! So far I've weeded out some just on asthetic alone, and then I've had one or two already tell me their booked. I feel really late in the game for this and am worried I won't find a nice photographer. I have an appointment to see someone that someone recommended to my dad. Her pics are alright but figured I'd take the time to visit her studio and talk in person. Waiting back on another and still waiting to hear back from a few of the ones I really liked.

Were super worried about budget though. Dad about fainted when he heard 3K. :( so I'm worried that ill have to settle a bit and I won't get awesome pics. I know I shouldn't and everything will be fine/work out but still. :<

When I booked my photog there were two things that were most important to me in a package, and if the photog didn't offer it, they were immediatly off my list.

  1. All day coverage. I wanted pictures of us getting ready, to the very last dance.
  2. Digital rights to photos. Many photographers make you purchase prints/canvases from them, and typically these prints are expensive! So then you are limited to only picking your favorites, spending a lot of money and possibly only having that single copy. I made sure that my package included a high-res CD with all my images so that I was free to do whatever with them. Meaning I can print them on my own. I can make a million copies if I wanted and I could store them on every computer I own, etc. (I did b-pics and spend over 1k on everything, to only get a hardcover book and no copies of the images for the future. I learned my lesson.)

My advice is to make sure you search search search!! It def is overwhelming with prices, but ditto the other ladies.

Make sure your personality meshes with the photographers. Do they understand your vision? That's very important (along with all the other details!) lol.

This could be tricky, but I ended up finding a photographer on Craigslist for my bachelorette party and she was awesome!! I wish I would have found her earlier! It would have saved me $$. But I've also heard horror stories from finding vendors on Craigslist so take caution.

Yeah so far I have 4 appointments lined up. One I know is an all day affair, two I think are limited hours (I really don't get this at all? Do photographers really have time to do more then one wedding a day?) and unfortunately with the prices I've been quoted I probably can't afford more then 6 hours unless their willing to edit their packages for me. I can probably link their websites when I get home but for the curious and feel like googling here are their names:

Rob Hurth Photography

Photographs by Jim

Beth Feldman photography

Jaime lee photography

Rob Hurth offers all day service and who I'm leaning towards. His package I think starts at 1,700-ish and seems willing to custom edit the package. I'm afraid he might be heavy on the filters and photo editing though. I really like Jaime Lee's photos but she's out of my price range at like 3k but I figured I'd visit the studio and see if she can reduce her prices. One is a friend of my father and the other I met at the bridal show and seems nice enough to meet with us. So we'll see.

Options are VERY good!  I echo what the ladies said above; try to stick with your budget, and DEFINITELY try to get the CD with the digital rights.  In fact, I would actually take the CD over any print package, because you can always create your own after the fact, but some may not be willing to do so.

The other important thing is to make sure that you and your photographer get along--this is a person (or people if you're getting a package that has another photographer) that will follow you around throughout the day--a person who will be in the same room as you as you and your people are getting ready, so you need to be comfortable with them.  Our photographer was a coworker of mine, and we had her do our e-pics, and we were so pleased with her work and how comfortable we felt that we asked her to do our wedding as well (she's also doing our maternity pics and our newborn shoot once our little boy gets here, so that says something!).

Don't be overwhelmed--go into each appointment knowing what you want and getting ready to get to know them.  Ask to see more of their work and ask them about their philosophies on capturing their clients' moments on film.  And definitely try to find reviews!  You can even check their Facebook pages (if they have them) to see more work and maybe even recommendations.

For me the photographer hunt has by far been the most frustrating.  I knew what I wanted, but I couldn't find anyone in my price range that I liked.  Just really look at pictures they have because it will tell you a lot.  We ended up going slightly over budget, but I was ok with cutting else where because to me photography was a top priority!

This topic certainly overwhelms me.  I have really been shying away from it lately.

The only thing I'm shying away is the price. Being a freelance artist i feel I can negotiate and talk and some what understand the lingo. So here's hoping.

Had a really good first meeting. They were willing to work with me and gave me a contract to look over/hold onto and gave me a deadline to sign it to get a freebie item off their offers. :P so well see how the rest go starting Monday.

the ladies above said alot of good stuff.  something else i would say is to find out how long it normally takes the photographer to  do the normal shots with the wedding party.  here is why i say that:

my brothers best friend got married a couple years ago and had they hired a pro to do the photography.  they planned to do the pics before the ceremony.  there was a 2-3 hour window that they had to do photos and relax before the wedding.  the pro obviously hadnt been a pro very long.  they had seen her stuff and loved it and got along with her, but she didnt have a mental list of each shot she wanted.  they took up 2.5 hours doing pics before the wedding and another hour after the wedding.  they werent suppose to take any pics after the ceremony, but she took so long getting her shots before the ceremony and wasnt done that she had to get some after too.  she took forever getting them their pics.  when they did get their pics (like 3 months later) they were all on 2 cds.  my brother went through the cds and made a slideshow dvd with their pics, but in so doing he found that the pro had taken 3-5 pics of the same shot the entire day.  it wasnt like someone had an eye closed so they had to do it again.  she just did that all day long.  no wonder it took so long.  to add to the stess of that day, the guys were wearing morning suits in August in the south.  if you arent from the south or havent been, that is REALLY HOT AND HUMID.  July and August in the south are really hot and humid.  but a full morning suit with vest made them all sooooo uncomfortable.

Our first appointment went pretty well! They were friendly and willing to work with us. We got a contract to look over and a deadline to sign, which they were generous with the time and allowed it after we've spoken with the other photographers before deciding if we were interested in them. An engagement shoot is included which was one of the things I wanted. But there's one or two things in the contract that I've asked them to clarify. Starting Monday its an appointment every day till sat or Sunday. I hope I don't get overwhelmed!
