Alterations

Ok, I had my first fitting today and HOLY CRAP! I didn't expect to pay almost the same price in alterations than what I did for the dress itself.  Maybe I shouldn't complain, it could cost more at a private seamstress. Sorry, I had to complain.

Did you go to the bridal salon where you bought the dress?  I went to a private seamstress that works out of her home and she is less expensive than the salons.  I've actually heard that salons charge way more...

Hey beatie,

I purchased my dress from Davids Bridal. I really had no choice because I know of no private seamstress so I was stuck. The alterations actually cost me $15 less than what my dress did!

Yeah, you're telling me. I didn't lose as much weight as I was hoping to but oh well, I can't cry over it. I'm just going to keep watching what I eat and just maintain what I'm at now. I can't afford to have it taken in after I paid so much today. But all that aside, the big day is 36 days away and I got a new job so I have alot to be thankful for right now.

I know a great seamstress in san diego/PQ area if any of you ladies are interested. I just needed to hem the front of the dress (chiffon) cuz the back is short train...I was charged $35. Both of my bridesmaids dresses are floor length and I wanted them to be more casual, so one of them went with me and was charged $25 to shorten (and actually had it above the knee in the front and longer in the back, which I think is more complicated than mine)  They (husband & wife) can do it within days or a week if needed. Unlike most alteration places..as soon as they know it is "wedding" attire the prices are sky high, but they did not care..they look at the material and how hard the alteration is.

The bridal salon wants to charge me almost half of what I payed for my dress... so I'm feeling the pain. I'm hoping to loose some weight to make the cost seem worth it. =o)

I paid $100 for mine(I had it taken in on the sides, hemmed, detachable straps and a bustle). If anyone needs a place to go in the Torrance(Southbay area in L.A.), PM me and I'll give you her info. She did exactly what I wanted for like a 1/3 of what I was quoted elsewhere.

I took mine to a private seamstress/alterations shop that I've used before.  Went for my first fitting just this week.

The bustle (semi-cathedral lace train) is going to be $28

Then adding darts under the bust (to take it in so it's more fitted) is going to be $30.

Depending on how well it fits once those are done, I may or may not have the bodice taken in just a hair on both side seams, which I think will be another $40, but still, all told, even if I do that, we're just at $100 (which is about what I'd budgeted/expected it to cost), so I'm happy.

Ouch! I took my dress to an alteration shop, but all I had done was take the bust in and add boobie cups so it looks like I have some! It cost 55.00, but I had to take my dress to be cleaned since it was shipped dirty (and no one relized it) and that cost 65.00. But I got the dress back super quick - I took it to the cleaners on Tuesday and picked it up on my way home from work yesterday! I know I got out super cheap, but I only paid 250 for the dress.

My Sister was my seamstress children's teacher.  She has made all of my families wedding gowns.

I went to see her after not talking to her for years. Thank God I found her!!  She works for a boutique where she makes all the alterations and makes some of the Gowns herself.  Because of the family connection, I got my entire custom dress, Custom Vail, Garter and built in bra and tummy tucker,  for a whopping $595 !!!  She lives in Glendale CA but is currently making a move to Utah.  The gown has all Sworovsky crystals. I hope it looks as great as I remember it. I get it Friday.

She says that the alterations are a way for the shop to make their money. I don't understand how that works since they already made money on the gown.  But you know "Bride & Wedding" means you mark everything up.

My dress was $700 and my alterations were $300. I almost walked out of the salon crying on the day of my first fitting because of the cost.

AHHH that is a lot if it is even close to the dress price! Yeah Davids Bridal charges a HELL of a lot more than other private seamstresses.
