Alternative Cake Stand Ideas...

Hi Girls, I'm currently stuck between two cake vendors, and it comes down to money, and that one place decorates much better IMO. The taste is the same to us since its fresh strawberries, and alternating choc butter cream tiers.

- Are you getting a cake stand for your cake??? (This adds $50 rental fee, and a deposit = more $$$..)
- With a 4 tier cake do I even need a stand- I really just like the look!
- Where can you get them cheaper then the bakery?
- What other options do I have- maybe DIY?? (I have seen those glass blocks used)

Basically, I'm trying to get costs down a little and wanted alternative cake stand ideas. I love the 'clouding' look with fabric- but I have a hard time finding pictures of it and how to make it look GOOD hahah

Thanks!
- HMM :)

I'm using inspiration from some pics I saw here on PW. My florist is providing square votives and orchid blooms. The votives will be placed up-side-down with the blooms under them forming a square base for the cake. The cake will sit on top of the votives. In the very center I'll place an LED light to illuminate the base, brining the votives and orchids to "life."

HMM - our bakery "shared" this with us:

if we didnt want to rent the cake stand, we could always use our own or borrow someone's and drape luxurious fabric over it - then the cake woudl sit on top of that...

Yah- thats clouding- just not sure who is capable to do that at our wedding??? haha

I really like that look- which would match our theme well. I need a handy man to rig me up something and then just have someone put the linen over it for that effect...

Anyone have good pictures of this?

I saw my photog take photos of a recent wedding where the bride did this for her cake:

I thought it was a really cool idea, and they have those apothecary jars at Target for $6.97 right now!

Our fake cake company is throwing in the stand for free. It's sterling silver and is very pretty!

WOW thanks for the ideas- I love them all- See I told you I was indecisive :)

I wonder if that square vase Idea would look nice- but rather with some red flower inside and a red/pink LED light instead??? Hmmmmmm

HolyMoly - I was just thinking of doing that same thing but with pink LED's and pink/orange flowers inside! :) My centerpieces consist of a bunch of square vases of varying sizes so this would be perfect!

I'd seen the pic of that cake stand before and loved it but never considered it. Now I'm thinking it's perfect! :) Thanks for re-introducing me to it nicsknack! :)

I just didn't think they could hold up a 4 tier cake haha I could just imagine them all breaking on my wedding day and the damn cake falling over hahahahahaha

I think its a nice idea- I could practice it as well (but now Im back to square one and not saving that much money!) But its a unique idea to try out...

Do you know the size of those votives and about how many I would need?
I know Pier 1 has them for $1 right now- just not sure if they would be big enough?

HMM: The votives we're using aren't the thin fragile ones. They're the thicker, more substantial votives. I think they're about 4" squares. Plus, the weight will be distrubuted over 12 votives. I think you should be fine. I love this idea because its so versatile by mixing up the flowers and the color of the LED light.

If the weight factor still concerns you, what about using glass block. You know, the stuff that's used for glass walls. You can buy them at home improvement stores or most hardware stores. We're using glass block as 'lifts' on our buffet under the trays/platters of food.

Crystal, glass, and orchids have become the common thread through our entire wedding so I'm partial :)

I love the pics that Miss.Mandy posted. You could even add some fillers in the jars to give a little punch of color. So cute!

our baker suggested using a big card board box and just use a nice tablecloth to cover it up.

Wow. I hadn't even thought about cake stands. lol. sigh! I'm wondering the same thing, HHM, if it would look best with a square cake b-c I was thinking that was beautiful but my cake is round. What do you think? I know you are in my area with a summer wedding--maybe we could share the votives!

Yah, I know square would be better. But the cake is on a layer of something anyway-that board thingy, so maybe they could put it on a square one instead of round?

The bottom tier is probably 14 inches, plus the bottom thing they put it on will add 4 more inches (2 more inches wide on each side) If I do the math right that means 25 4" square votives? (Unless I put something else in the middle) haha can you tell Im thinking too much :) I meet with the prospective cake vendor next week- I can ask more questions then I guess...

Good luck! I hadn't even thought of a cake holder until this was posted. Thats why I *need* this site. lol Let us know what you decide. I didn't ask my vendor, so I guess this generates another phone call.

definitely ask if your baker loans the cake stands. my baker is loaning us one for a refundable $150 deposit, which gets returned when we return the cake stand.

if you do use votive glasses, make sure they are thick glass and not the thin glass. those ones would definitely break. maybe you can look into acrylic. good luck!
