What a horrible situation to be in - especially since he's family and it's not like you can tell him to just get the hell out! I had a roommate in college who was similar in the slob sense, although not the lazy and in debt sense. Since no one else cared enough to clean up his mess, I became the "mom" of the house and spent many hours cleaning up after him. Then I decided I'd had enough. Nothing worked - asking him to clean, setting up a cleaning schedule, etc. The only thing that worked was picking up his dirty dishes, rank clothes (he liked to bike a lot!), empty cans, leftover pizza, etc., and placing everything on his bed so when he came home at night he'd have to deal with it if he wanted to sleep. For a while he would just move it to the floor so he could sleep on the bed, but eventually he couldn't walk through all the filth and he started improving a little. We gave him his own set of dishes and kept all of our things that we wanted to use in our bedroom. Whenever we used dishes we immediately cleaned them and put them back in our room. I don't know if any of this would work for you, but I believe there's always a solution and a way of dealing with a bad situation that you're stuck in for a period of time. Good luck!
Mare...you need to move up your plan to move back to Cali!!
Oh Mare....that's awful! Thank God he has a girlfriend who's place he can stay at most of the time! Let's hope they don't break up! lol. Umm....anyway you can convince him to move in with the girlfriend? Any reason why the two slobs can't live in one happy slob apt?? LOL.
i know :( thats what i say bets! But that would require him pitching in for rent at her place.. he wouldnt want that!
MOVE NOW!! ar at least by the time jackie and i move - we can all be "neigbors" b/c seriously - 4 years ---> you will have gone stark raving mad!!!
um, in the meantime, how about getting a phone number just for you and W; using paper plates??
also - when i lived with my cousin in san diego (same hot mess - fast food containers and bags everywhere, empty water and gaterade bottles all over) i PAID her (yep HER) to clean up after herself! i paid hjer $100 a week to keep all her filth and gross stuff in her own room! i left her a list of stuff to do (windows, vaccuum, etc) and she'd do it - i guess the $$ was motivation enough???
