Any one from Rochester here?

Hi all!  Just curious if anyone from Rochester is in this group.  DH and I are seriously considering moving there but we'd like to ask some questions to someone other than my brother and SIL who already live there.  I don't know what they would say to get us to come there!  LOL

Yay!

I got a few questions for ya if that's ok.

Like, how much snow is on your car in the am :-)?

What are the property taxes like?

Do you happen to have any info about the hospitals?  I'm a nurse and would love a little insight on teh best ones to apply to.

Thanks so much!

I'm about an hour from Rochester and will be moving there soon.  The snow isn't too bad, it really only piles up a few times in the winter (like 5+ inches).  Most mornings you just have to brush the dusting off, or scrape the ice.  The cold is what really bothers me.

As for hospitals, it really depends on what kind of nurse you are.  Strong Memorial (and affiliated Highland Hospital) and Rochester General are the big ones.  Strong is a teaching/ research hospital and has excellent tuition reimbursement programs.  They cover just about everything: they just built a new cancer center, have a huge children's hospital and Highland has excellent maternity care and geriatric centers.  Their nurses have been ranked amongst the best in the country.  I am at Strong frequently for my sons special needs and my (almost) MIL is a peds nurse there.

Rochester General I don't know too much about.  I konw they have a great cardiac team and the area's neurosurgeons split their time between Strong and General.

DH and I live in the Roc as well!

We live in a town called Henrietta and our property taxes are CHEAP! We have almost 1/2 acre and pay right around 3k a yr. Our property in towns like Brighton or Pittsford (where my parent and sister live) would have been over 5k a yr. The great thing about Rochester is almost everything is 10-15mn away. So you do not need to live right in the city, the suburbs are VERY convenient.

The snow is more of a nuicence than anything else. When we get a good storm you can see upwards of 5-6in (on occasion 12) on your car.

As for hospitals, Strong Memorial Hospital is a good one (and a Trauma 1 hospital), Highland is much more laid back then strong, but has a great Ortho program, bariatric's Dr's and a beautiful maternity center, Rochester General is another good hospital (other than I get lost when I go there) I do not know too much about them though, Unity/Park Ridge in Greece has a good chemical dependancy program and they are adding a helipad in the next yr or so. Lakeside in Brockport (about 15-20mn from the city) is smaller but still just as good.

I can tell you for sure we are hurting for nurses in this area. Is there a possibility of come up here and touring some of the hospitals so you can get a feel? (Sorry, didn't look at your profile to see where you are located now)

Any other questions feel free to PM me

Thanks so much for all the feedback ladies!  DH and I are visiting my brother in the beginning of Nov.  We def plan to look around. Hopefully, there won't be too much snow going on.

We plan to get a house with a 2-2 and 1/2 car garage.  It's a deal breaker if the home doesn't have one.  That should help with the cleaning off the snow every morning right?

DH is really excited about it.  The plan is that by this time next year, we would be moving.  I lived there for a littel bit about 5 years ago and get this...it was one of the mildest winters they ever had!  I didn't get a true reading then.  I love that it's so close to Niagara Falls, there's Darien lake, lake Ontario (I think right).  I went to Monroe CC for a semester.  Oh, and I lust loved Abbott's!

My main concern is the job situation.  Sounds great for me since there is a demand for nurses, but I don't know about Mike.  He is a manager at a supermarket.  Wegman's would be top notch for that but I know it's ubber competitive.  I also heard the people are still struggling from the Kodak layoffs.  :-(

Maybe a PW GTG?  I'll need to make friends!  You can all make fun of my NYC accent...know what I'm tawking bout?!  LOL

I have tons of family that live on LI.  I even did a semester of college down there.  Most of my family make fun of *my* accent.
