Anyone familiar with the Bronx?

My FH and I are going to travel nurse after the wedding and have been offered a contract in the Bronx.  I just don't know how safe the area is.  The staffing agency said their first priority is safety when placing us for housing, but I still want to be safe traveling to and from work.  We really want to go to New York because there is so much to do there and it would be during the fall so hopefully it will be pretty :)  Any tips/advice would be much appreciated!

The Bronx is safe.. it's like any other place... it has good parts and bad parts... If you tell me the exact area... I can give you a better indication of what you are dealing with.

Its city living so if your not use to that it may come as a shock... but its got some very tough tough neighborhoods (projects etc) but it also has so really nice neighborhoods... and you will be a stone throw away from the greatest city in the world!

Ooh!! Lincoln Hospital? Nope, I wouldn't suggest it. First, that hospital doesn't have a good rep and it's in the hood. Stay away from the South Bronx. There are plenty of other good reputable hospitals in the Bronx as well as NYC in general.

And I'm worried because I'm on hold for the the hospital right now and the message that is playing is in Spanish.  I can get through a basic assessment in Spanish, but if they have anything else going on other than your basic vomiting, diarrhea, cold symptoms, I'm clueless.  LOL.  Hmm, what to do?

justleisa, have you lived in a big city before? If not, NY may take some getting used to. :) I couldn't think of living anywhere else. Since you're thinking of moving here, I assume you've visited? I live in the Bronx, but I wouldn't go to Lincoln Hospital unless it were a dire emergency, if that tells you anything, lol. The South Bronx is definitely not the best part of the Bronx, even though it houses my favorite stadium, Yankees Stadium. :) There are much better sections of the Bronx honestly.

Ulimtately, the choice is up to you of course, but definitely, definitely do your research. Since your working with a staffing agency, maybe they can try to place you at a more reputable hospital. There are so many. What are your options right now?
