Baby Name - who did you tell?

After you find/found out the gender & chose the perfect name, who will/did you tell?

  • Tell everyone?

  • Tell just close friends/family?

  • Keep it a secret until the baby is born?

I want to keep it a secret until our baby is born. Although I am horrible at lying, and not the greatest at keeping my own secrets either... Also, we have a TON of friends having kids in our group and I would HATE to settle on a name & find out that someone else just named their kids the same (in our inner circle). So I bet I will end up telling a select few...

We don't want to know the gender, so it's an easy answer. But if we would like to know, we would keep it a secret until the baby is born (aswell as for the name).

We didn't tell anyone, we wanted to make sure the names suited our boys first!
When people asked we just told them we weren't telling anyone!

At first we weren't going to tell anybody...then we decided to tell EVERYBODY in case someone wanted to use the same nam (so we wouldn't look like the name thieves!)

We are telling everyone our boy or girl name : ) Five of my close friends are having babies, and I didn't want any of them stealing my names! : )

I'd like to keep it a secret until the baby is born but I don't know if that will pan out. I don't want people's negative opinions should they have any and we all know people freely give their opinions even if it's not solicted!

@DansMrs - I have a few too many people in my life that are VERY opinionated (my sister being one of them), that I would rather not have her input. So I'm with you on that one!

@Jackie - that is exactly why I would want to tell people. I certainly dont want to 'steal' a name either (I dont want them stealing mine!).

I told everyone my ids names, but The dr's never told me the kids genders. I just knew. I was right 3/3 right down to hair and eye color.I never had an alternative name going into the delivery room.

I would say that if you tell stick to your guns about the names you choose otherwise you may end up doing what I do.

Andrew was supposed to be William but my MIL protested due to some person on someside of the family. My second choice was Zachary, but Mark vetoed that one.  I love the name Andrew, but when I pray at night I always say William Andrew!

Andrew is from my favorite book growing up Ender's Game. Now, I really regret it because Orson Scott Card is such a ___, not a nice person. His writing does not reflect his actual world views and that is disheartening.

We arent finding out the gender so of course everyone at least wants to hear our baby names and we arent sharing those haha.  I have like 6 other girls having baby girls around the same time I am and the name we like is a little different so I dont see many picking it.  (I've written it in my baby book so people will know we didnt steal it from anyone if we have a girl haha.)

When people ask, we tell them the name we picked. At first, I was hesitant because I didn't want to tell people and them turn their noses up at it. But really, I honestly don't care if anyone doesn't like it. If they don't like it then they're more than welcome to not use it for their own child. He's our baby and it only matters if we like it haha. It's a very nice name that's not too popular but not too "out there", which is one of the reasons we picked it, so it's not like I'm being mean and naming my kid something really crazy or made up like that poor little baby whose mother named her "Hashtag"... There are definitely pros and cons to both telling people and not telling people the name, so you just have to decide which works better in your case!

We had four names - one of which was our favorite but we weren't willing to commit until we saw her. We didn't share any of the four names with anyone (no one close to us is currenlty pregnant so name stealing wasn't an issue). We know sharing would mean opinions but if we just announced her name on her birthday they really couldn't give an opinion then. It worked out well for us :)

We kept it close until we were 100% sure, but now we've told the world.  I don't want any name theives like Jackie, said.  Haha.  Esp. since we know some people pregnant with little boys.  Gotta  shot-gun ;)

I was worried about people's reactions, epecially our parents, but everyone has been really supportive.

I don't think there is a right answer here.  We started out just telling people that asked or I felt comfortable telling.

We are having a boy and we are keeping it a secret. I don't want to hear people's opinions about the name we choose so everyone will find out when he's born.

The only person we've told was friends of ours who were pregnant at the same as me. we wanted to "claim it", lol.

When people ask I either say we have no names or its a secret.

We want to keep our chosen name under wraps until the baby is born, and it is already proving difficult. We have started putting the word out that we will be keeping it quiet, because telling people we are considering a bunch of names backs us into a corner every time. I don't get it -- if someone said that to me, I would take it as a hint and back off. No such luck! :-)

I figure it is a lot harder for people to be opinionated when the name is attached to a new baby, so that is our main reason for not sharing the name until our baby is born.

We told my parents a few days ago, and even though I was nervous about my mom being opinionated (she has been suggesting names since we told her we were pregnant and we have very different tastes!), my parents were super supportive and really liked our choice! We do know another couple that is pregnant right now, and they will be the only other people we tell. We agreed to be each other's exception to the no-sharing rule :-)

Oh gosh...we aren't fixed yet on a name but when people ask, we are telling them what we have in mind. Actually, DH is really picky and wants a "traditional" name so I guess we won't have many reaction. But funnily, everybody around us is excited about name picking but DH & I are not!!! It's so complicated and such a big decision...

I totally agree, Pascale! Before I got pregnant, there were (and still are) tons of names that we liked. But when it comes down to choosing The Name, it is such a tough decision!

I told one person so far and that will be it. A close friend, actually a bm in my wedding. She loved the name and agreed with the choice. She is the type that is supportive and not judgemental, unlike some of my other friends and family members.

We chose to keep the name a secret until she was born. I think it's something special and one of the few things that you get to hold on to so we did. I also didn't want to hear anyone's opinions on the name though everyone says they absolutely love it no matter who we speak to : )
