Bah, centerpiece failure!

Okay so I made alllll these lantern centerpieces and then realized FI and I had talked about keeping the french doors open all night - the wind is going to blow over all these lanterns and things will catch on fire... in short bad idea. I tried to figure out a way to anchor them but it affects the way the light shines through (tape etc). So, I'm thinking floral DIY simple rose centerpieces (we only need 7) I'm just ordering roses and sticking them in a vase.

Now where can I find some good oversized vases? I checked jamali and save-on-crafts but they're kind of too expensive or too modern (trying to keep it around $5 ea if at all possible) and something that will fit 25 roses without feeling too small on a ten person table. I know beggars cannot be choosers but the more "classic" looking the better :) TIA

PS anyone having an indoor reception want 30 some lanterns for partial material cost? Takers? Takers? haha just kidding

Do they have to be tall?

How about these?

I have heard that some people add sand inside the lanterns to weight them down. Could that be an option?

Also, if you are looking for tall vases and you don't want to spend alot, maybe try Ebay or even Walmart if you have one in your area.

Try Big Lots and Target too. It could look really pretty if they were all different vases in roughly the same shape and size.

Good luck!

Ok, first I have to say that when I saw the title of this post I knew it was you Champ, don't know why, but I did. Anyway, I 2nd Big Lots, also if you have a Tuesday Morning or Burlington Coat Factory near you, you may get lucky. You can also try Ikea, some of their vases are under $10.

Good luck!

Cari haha thats because my DIYs have a way of backfiring. Actually these lanterns turned out exactly like the Martha ones but I didn't realize the Martha directions are flawed, haha, sorry Martha. There is no bottom (otherwise sand would work) to the lanterns. They just sit around the candles... Our site has french doors along a long wall that we wanted to open so people have more room on the veranda... and the house is on the water which means there will be a sea breeze :( fire hazard!

This morning I found some other instructions of hers for covering paint cans, coffee cans etc in paper. I have a lot of extra paper from wedding invitations so I'm thinking of trying that, maybe with the embossed paper?

Wal-mart has a lot of vases in different shapes and sizes in the arts and crafts dept. They range between $2-10. I'm getting all my glass containers for the candy buffet there.

Champ what about Ikea? We were going to do a candle in a glass vase at first and I found a bunch of stuff there. They might even have something white and close to the first photo above.

I love the idea of covering cans...it could be very elegant to have different cans of different shapes and sizes...and then found some nice paper...maybe even wallpaper...

I agree - nice idea! I just saw that somewhere else and liked it, although I can't remember now where. And it would be a great use for that beautiful "girly" embossed paper you got for the invites. =)

Can you put them somewhere else that they won't blow over? I really hate for you to waste them after all of your hardwork.

I'm so sorry about your predicament, maybe you could put a strip of clear tape across the bottom and put the candle on it, that might hold it down. or completely taping the bottom and putting sand in it....

I love the idea of the floral supplies shop, they have some pretty urns that I'm keeping in mind :)

That is exactly what I was thinking aching!

Kaiya, that is a really good idea - that's what I tried! Unfortunately the tape shows through once you light the candles... ugh

thanks caribear - are you having an indoor ceremony? want them?!

s2Bw - I wish, we're not really using the rest of the house, maybe I'll cluster a few in the parlor, like on the coffee table. But we're really just using the veranda and the main hall... and I have a bazillion of them! haha, I wish our chapel allowed candles because that would be a spot, oh well live and learn. Its alright, it was fun project!
